Ricky Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I don't really think we need to be getting rid of anyone to bring in a RB as we don't really have one. We've been 'making do' all season playing midfielders there or playing a CB there. For the midfield it would be nice to see Mokoena go to be replaced with someone capable of playing football, on the left wing I wonder if it's time for Peter to be either given a season long loan to a decent championship, or promoted team. I personally don't think we need a striker as I think our options are pretty good there. I'd have liked to have seen Derbyshire get a few more games this season.
bluebruce Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 the thing with your top players is you have to pay them more than when you signed them. Even if only on the back of 1 or 2 seasons worth of performing. Benni may not have fired in as many this season but his goal record over the 2 seasons is still mighty impressive. It'll be interesting to see if Santa gets the same stick after his second season syndrome kicks in. The key phrase there is 'top players' I'm afraid Surely we don't have to pay Gamst anywhere near 45k, and if we do we'd be best getting shut instead. Money that would be better spent on other players. You have to at least stay at the level you were performing at before your previous contract was signed in order to get a pay rise, would be the conventional logic. Pedersen's was extended in the summer wasn't it? And he has played even worse than last season.
T4E Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 That was Amdy from Rangers [or Charlton who own him]. Who came on yesterday at centreback and was absolutely atrocious.
adopted scouser Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Also it's got to be time Berner was moving on. Was he ever here ?
Hughesy Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I think its time that the following left. Tugay Berner Henchoz Enckleman (Cardiff maybe?) Gallagher - even if its a free with a big sell-on clause attached. Mokoena if decent money is offered - £2m + would be good enough. Dont forget we got more than that for Kuqi before you shoot me down. Roberts - but only if we recieve £4m or more and there is a replacement knocking around.
S15 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Gallagher - even if its a free with a big sell-on clause attached. By big do you mean written in Caps Lock?
EwoodGlory Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I wouldn't sell Gallagher, he has something about him. I would rather get rid of Rigters.
Hughesy Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Gallagher has had about 4 seasons to prove himself. Rigters had 6months and got injured. Id rather we gave him a chance to be honest. Shame thats Hughes isnt in the market for a striker this summer. More on that here. Bentley not for Sale, and Hughes not after a striker
only2garners Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Another one for Nicko - Five Live reporting that Sven will go at the end of the season.

City have shown a great improvement on previous years. Depends which half of the season you mean. First half they were excellent, second half saw woeful performances and falling gates.
Cocker Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Depends which half of the season you mean. First half they were excellent, second half saw woeful performances and falling gates. No excuse because all of us have to go through it but they have had a couple of big injuries that hasn't helped
only2garners Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Depends which half of the season you mean. First half they were excellent, second half saw woeful performances and falling gates. Must be frustrating though. Frank had a plan which asked for a top 10 finish this season and Sven has delivered that.
RibbleValleyRover Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Depends which half of the season you mean. First half they were excellent, second half saw woeful performances and falling gates. They will be ending up in a higher position this season than they have done in previous years. Yes they have had a slump recently, but its a massive improvement on the Pearce years.
LeftWinger Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 They will be ending up in a higher position this season than they have done in previous years. Yes they have had a slump recently, but its a massive improvement on the Pearce years. They've got 13 points more than last season - at the cost of over 45 million pounds in transfer fees. Pearce had to sell more than he brought in. I reckon Pearce could have got them in the top half with 45 million quid!
T4E Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 They will be ending up in a higher position this season than they have done in previous years. Yes they have had a slump recently, but its a massive improvement on the Pearce years. For a ridiculous amount of money spent. With the spending power they have, a really shrewd manager could turn them in to something big. The likelihood of Frank going for 'shrewd' above 'famous' is small.
RibbleValleyRover Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 For a ridiculous amount of money spent. With the spending power they have, a really shrewd manager could turn them in to something big. The likelihood of Frank going for 'shrewd' above 'famous' is small. The fact is last season they were something like 4 points off relegation and this season they are 4 points of sixth, two games to play, guaranteed a top 10 finish. It’s a massive improvement on the previous year. I cannot argue Sven has spent a lot of money, but it will take far more than £45 million to turn them into “something big”, or realistically challenging for the league. It looks like I’m the only one on here who thinks Sven’s sacking is underserved, and that it takes time to build a squad ready to challenge the very top clubs.
T4E Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Don't get me wrong, I agree it's too quick to get rid of him. My point was that the overall improvement their league position they'll show this year will not be value for money having spent £45m. If they spend that every Summer, they should be pushing top 4 within the next three seasons. They won't, however, if a quarter of that money goes on Rolando Bianchi.
Head Rover Heels Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 It looks like I’m the only one on here who thinks Sven’s sacking is underserved, and that it takes time to build a squad ready to challenge the very top clubs. You're not the only one, i assure you of that. Yes they've spent big, and yes, they could have done a bit better with the money spent, but in my opinion Sven has done a good job of gelling a new bunch of players together. If they'd played steadily and ended up with the same points, without the high flying followed by a slump, i think he'd be given more time. New owner - Doesn't understand the nature of this game if you ask me.
joey_big_nose Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Its funny. All the massive spending clubs have come into bother- Newcastle, West Ham, City, Spurs. Those three clubs swapped a huge amount of their team over the season. Those that gradually change up weak parts of their squad have done better- Everton, Rovers, Villa. The only side that has made pretty big changes and done well is Portsmouth. Stability is vitaly important.
LeftWinger Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I hope no-one is actually feeling sorry for Sven. He's about to make another fortune while not working.
Head Rover Heels Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I hope no-one is actually feeling sorry for Sven. He's about to make another fortune while not working.Certainly not - The City fans on the other hand...
modes98 Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I hope no-one is actually feeling sorry for Sven. He's about to make another fortune while not working. I don't feel sorry for anyone, it's just a bit harsh to sack anyone after giving them only 38games, unless it's steve mcclaren, then 1 is to many. It will be interesting to see if any of svens stars express an interest in leaving now.
thenodrog Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Despite having a lovely TV image he sh1t on us big time and p1ssed up Jack Walkers leg in the process rem! So who cares about Sven getting a strong dose of 'Chairmans revenge'? He's earned it.
