Another one for Nicko - Five Live reporting that Sven will go at the end of the season.

Talk about the ups and downs of football eh? I'm guessing that in effect he must really have left his desk already. His position on the bench etc must now be untenable.

How poetic that the guy to deliver the final coup de grace was Woy!:rover:

Heard a fascinating - but true - line on this today...Shinawatra started thinking Sven was the wrong man after Rovers beat City 1-0 back in September.

He was shocked to see how bad Bianchi and Garrido were, sacked the agent who brought them in, and told people he feared Sven was not the man.

It might have been a snap judgement, but maybe he was right. Bianchi was a huge mistake and Garrido nearly as bad.

Quite pleased to hear he saw it that way, I remember giving City an almighty doing in my match report next day and was accused of being harsh by some in Man City blue.

Funny old game.

Not harsh Alan they really were crap! Goodness only knows why we ended up being glad to hear the final whistle. They were riding really high at the time but my immediate post match prediction was that they would finish below us.

Odd that they managed to do the double over MU though.

He had to make rush signings based on scout reports.

Considering he got Elano and Corluka I think he did very well.

Scout reports dont always work out, Grabbi anyone.

It's a shocking decision. Here is hoping they don't want Hughes although I would definitely take Sven (if only to hear the reaction) :)

Almost forgot Petrov, he is a quality player.

Gelson Fernandes looks a bargain as well, he only cost around £2 million but he seems to have all the qualities to be a top defensive midfielder (I was very impressed with his performance against England recently). Sven was unlucky that Bojinov picked up a bad injury right at the start of the season, he's a fantastic player and probably would have made a huge difference to their season. I think the same thing happened with Castillo but he was more of a risky signing.

The only poor signings he's made really are Benjani and Garrido. Benjani was a very strange one, a complete panic buy at a massively inflated price because they'd missed out on Anelka (and presumably a few others). It was obvious to everyone, including Harry Redknapp, that Benjani was going through an uncharacteristic purple patch and would never keep up that goal scoring form, so I can't understand why Sven when for him.

Regarding City's soon-to-be vacant managerial position, I'm not worried about Hughes going because I'm sure Thaksin will want a massive European name to try and lift the profile of the club and attract top European players. Hughes is the sort of manager a more prudent, well run club will lust after, I don't think he'll tick many boxes on Thaksin's list of requirements.

So can you tell my why you think the likes of Craig Bellamy, Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy (amongst others) have joined little old Rovers? I'm pretty damn sure that Hughes would attract proven quality at Citeh with a large transfer budget!

The Bellamy - Wales link is quite obvious, McCarthy had been after a move to a Premiership club for years, he didn't seem picky about where he ended up. Santa Cruz was a coup though, it sounds like a lot of clubs were interested.

I think you've completely misinterpreted my post as a dig at Hughes, which it certainly was not. My point was that I think it will be a 'style above substance' appointment at City, Thaksin want as big a name as possible and create as much media hype and attention as he can. It'll be a Scolari/Rijkaard figure, I doubt whoever it is will come from another job in the Premiership.

Well, if Sven leaves Man city, Benfica will want him for sure.

and, no, he did not always use a lot of money to build good teams.

And it's funny, cause a lot of you are anxious that more money comes in so that Hughes can buy more expensive players...

He has always spent big bucks though.

Yeah, really spent a lot of money winning the UEFA Cup with a bankrupt amateur team. The team couldn't even afford the away trip to Valencia in the QF and had to loan money from the fans. He was only 34 years old at the time.

City might just become the next Newcastle.

I can understand Sinawatra being upset with some of the performances, but lets face it City were awful last season (and sold their two best players before Sven took over! Barton and Distin), and needed a major overhaul, ok Sven did spend a lot of money but at least give him the time to build his own team then judge him on his results!

Why would anyone want a job where your expected to deliver titles in one season?

Sven will have no problem finding a club, he's a good manager, but unfortunately he seems to let the media affect his performance, and therefore probably more suited to a job abroad.

LeChuck, hasn't Benjani already scored three goals for City, one being a match winner at his former club?

He was a panic buy, but I don't think it was a particularly bad one. That said, he'll probably be fourth choice striker by the end of the summer and the imminent £50 - 100m spending spree.

My thoughts too. Big Phil has been linked (again) but why would he feel the need to take such a risk whilst an incompetent chairman is in control?

..... apart from $$$$$$$ that is?

Don't know if this has been posted already, but it was on the BBC 6 O'clock news that Sven is to be sacked this summer. Yes that is the word it used "sacked" not resigned, or parting by mutual consent or anything else.

One word for it.......DISGRACEFUL!!!

I can understand the sympathy for Sven and it does seem a bit too quick, but just one thought.

When Jack Walker wanted to win the title he got ruthless and appointed Kenny Dalglish. He had given Don Mackay just a few weeks. It took everybody's breath away, but it worked and nobody criticised him for it when it did..

Spin forward 15 years or so and we have the same situation.

If Shinawatra HAS the money then he is entitled to go and spend it on a boss who can deliver...and he doesn't fancy Sven.

It's a hard game and money talks.

He has scored three, but he's had a couple of stinking games too.

It was just a weird signing given that their season was all but over, and like you said he'll probably be way down the pecking order come the start of next season. If he'd been four years younger then it might have made sense, but £7.5 million for a 29 year old of his ability just seems crazy.

And I bet if Chelsea were to approach Sven about replacing Grant in the summer, he would have not hesitations in talking to them, and leave City ;)
