It's all very well saying that now but you may recall we took some pride at this time last year in getting busy because we correctly anticipated that prices would rocket in the summer with clubs (apart from us) chucking loads of Sky money about.

With another tranche of TV money waiting to be spent in next season's budget, why should it be any different this summer?

The old "keeping the powder" dry line sounds like a convenient excuse to indefinitely put off spending any money to me.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Splurging a couple of million pounds here and there is good for the soul.

As far as Rovers go there is no pressure, apart from fan bragging rights, to sign anyone.

Why pay inflated transfers, we arent going to get relegated, therefore if there is no Rovers activity in the transfer market in the next 24 hours there is no loss.

Save the money for any summer bargains.

I'm leaning towards this "glass half full" approach as well. Prices are higher in the January window as teams are more reluctant to let players go, so the chances are better in the summer. The difference between last summer and this is that it's not a case of a massive new influx of money, the big price hike was last summer so that's not really an issue. Worth keeping in mind that with the inflated transfer fees also came inflated wages. So if a club thanks to the TV money got £15m for transfers + wages, and signed a player for £5m + £30k p/w they'd have £13.5m this year, all other things being equal. Rather silly to have an example like that I suppose, but the point stands. I think we'll see transfer fees go down somewhat, or at the very least not increase further.

Anyway, I'm not really worried. Despite the problems in our squad (MGP, a consistent 2nd striker, central midfield, perhaps right back) we're only a few points off 4th; we're doing really well. It's also very important to get the right players, we can't afford to have a "big" signing turn out badly. That doesn't mean that we have to rely on Samba-style bargains, but rather that when we do spend £2m+ on a player we have to be very sure it's going to work out.

But perhaps my lack of worries is due to me not having an expectation of a serious challenge for a CL spot. I look at the clubs around us, or indeed any club in the Premiership, and compare their income to ours. Looking at that, we shouldn't anywhere near where we are. Maybe I'm easy to please, but "just" comfortably staying in the Prem is punching above our weight. Of course I'd love it if we were seriously challenging for 4th or finished top 6 again, but I don't consider it a real failure if we don't either. It's about staying within our means and doing the best we can there. Also being a fan of Swedish football I really never count on investments; a club has to be self-sufficient in my view. I don't believe in the method that Leeds are a prime example of; of spending big and needing for it to succeed or you go bust. Obviously one can execute that strategy but not on a Leeds-level, but it's a principle I'm fundamentally against. Maybe I'm just someone who avoids risks, but well that's the way I see it.

Plus I have enough things to worry about as it is, so viewing Rovers in a positive light is certainly helpful for my mental health ;)

hi all,

just had some interesting news I did a search and found the following link:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn41...19/ai_n14323220

it quotes when or dear beloved U.Jack died he had a fortune of 700M now surely in the last 8 years we have never spent that much on players. I have to ask what fans are already asking where has all the money gone? I think this is one for the trustees to answer, as U.Jack's dream was to make BRFC financially stable and make sure we were competitive in the transfer market. But we have not been for a very long time, also something that was said about the recent interest from D.Williams he said first off it was not practical for him to takeover the club last august cause the trustees were doing a very good job of running the club now & transfer window had closed. Now he comes out with financially it is not viable to buy the club I would like to know what has changed in 5 months? there are some statements that don't ring true and I feel that there are things we as fans are in the dark over. I don't know if the trustees realise if we don't compete financially eventually we will get relegated, as everyone else will be throwing money round like it's water but we will stand still. I think that with the trustees we are not being told the whole picture and even the 3million we were getting from them they have withdrawn now. It's not like it was a huge amount of money! it is not like we are asking for a huge transfer kitty just enough to compete financially. I mean reading that since poor old jack died 8 years ago we could not have spent anyway near that 700M all we maybe need is say 10-15M which would enable us to be competitive in the market. I feel unless it happens eventually sparky will go to a club that will support him with a transfer kitty and all our good players will be off!

anyway rant over

Laters all.

But does nicko have prehensile feet?

The clock is ticking on the dingle's burst of transfer activity. For what its worth, reality is Gray sold and agent Cole loaned in to miss sitters. Laugherty on the point of departure and a Turkish fax has machine jammed or so our journalist cum HP service engineer informs us.

Have I missed anything dingly?- not that I am fussed if I have.

has Nicko all of a suden become a burnley fan, i wish he kept his news on the dingles to himself becasue i could not give a toss about them to be honest ( no offence nicko)

It started out as a passing interest but I fear he is going full blown, rumour has it he is getting a 6th digit surgically drafted onto his hand. Maybe he can type more scoops quicker then too.

I think nicko needs an Excorcism, bring him back from the dark side. :D

Didn't know where to stick this.

It seems that Dan Williams has resurfaced and may have found himself a new investment: the Rochester Rhinos. They are a US 2nd tier team that is apparently in oodles of debt.

By going after them the cynic in me says that he never had serious money and has now found his level.

Depends, there may be money to be made. I adjudged at the time that he was similar in nature to the people that bought my company. Made a killin aquiring the assets of our "distressed" company. BTW, just got done auctioning off all our equipment, close the building tomorrow and I'll be done for good on the 22nd of Feb.

If my gut feel on this fella was right we can ALL (yes even our coming out of the closet McDingle) count our blessings.

Mind you the people that leveraged us are a bit larger fish, try over 5 Billion in assets. Mmm not sure it is wise to name them here.

1st of all, stop saying " laters all ". Its annoying.

And next, I`m sure Jack didn`t leave his fortune to a football club, he was far too smart for that.

When we had Souness, the board knew we had to buy success.

Now we have Hughes they are taking it for granted he will pull rabbbits out of the hat.

Poor dingles. All that hope of a busy transfer window and not a permanent deal in sight.

Smokescreens, trying to manipulate the Dingle masses into to showing up for games. I think they thought Cole would have an Ian Wright effect. Amazing how Cole has got BETTER in the twilight of his career judging by the McDingles he is now a much better player than when he played for us.

DEFOE - Portsmouth are trying to buy him. Man City have come in for Benjani and that would give them the cash to buy him. Spurs may sell and have been away trying to sign someone tonight...don't know who. Rovers have no interest in this. Manager at game tonight to see Saturday's opponents...who are very beatable right now.

CHIMBONDA AND BOATENG - Not sure anything going to happen now.

BURNLEY - Argie move is off. Full details to be kept back until Sunday. Quite a situation. Not happy. Lafferty won't go, but there will be arrivals.

WHELAN - Not going to West Brom. Yet.

TROTMAN - Preston done the business.

ALVES - Dutch FA say AZ Alkmaar have a claim on him because he signed a contract with them before moving to Middlesbrough. Total shambles. Boro sniffing after Rob Hulse.

Don't give up hope. If I hit the Powerball lottery tonight I'll be on the phone to Mr Williams to see who Sparky wants.

Hell, I'd buy Rovers, put nicko in charge of the club shop.

speaking of the lottery, i got rather excited earlier.

i had the first 2 numbers, then 27 come out and i had 26! double tops 40 come out and that was the tenner in the bag. the remaining 2 balls to come out were on my other line but on another day...just maybe!

What a nonsensical take on things.

We're 5 points off a Champion's League...if ever there was a case for bringing in a couple of quality players, it's here and now.

It seems like Tottenham are going to be a strong force again next season, and Man City will probably bring a lot of quality players. Truth be told, this could be our only opportunity to have a crack at the higher places, I can't see how we'll be in a better position next season to challenge at the level we are so why hold back the money until then?
