Even though I agree in general, with the current market do you honestly think Roberts for £4m is any worse value than some of the other signings in January?

Obviously 19 other Premier League teams thought so...or he would have been off.

Well, yeah.. But it's a tad unfair, since there's probably only four or five of them with the cash and the need for him. 5m for Marlon King or 4m for Jason Roberts?

What I mean is it was too much for those who were interested. It doesn't matter how much we think a player is worth. Unless some one wants to pay it, then he has NO value.

Middlesbrough liked Roberts but put all of their money on Alves.

Sunderland like Roberts but thought he was over-priced, so they signed some Swedish lad.

Bolton had him on a list of about 50 and would not pay that kind of fee.

Fulham liked him under a previous manager.

Wigan did not want him back.

So, £4 million was too much for Roberts.

Fine ;)

Either way, it's no point in selling him just to sell, so I guess that makes all parties happy. We can't expect Hughes to pull out another Benni / Santa Cruz every time we sell a player upfront..

But surely the money + wages for Savage will be available in the summer?

There was also no point in selling - Roberts wanted away but then got a start...and is since back out.

You would hope there would be money for players in the summer. But looking at the books suggests that won't be the case unless someone leaves.

Hughes also confirmed he rejected several enquiries during the window for some of his key players, including Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley.

"There was interest in a number of our players but we are not a selling club," he added.

"If in the future that is something we have to do then we'll look at it, but we are not in that position as yet.

Nicko, have enjoyed your thread and quiet enraging of Dinglephobes. Thank you for that. Some time ago you raised the subject of a 'different' approach to the ownership issue. The initiative by professional Scouser Rogan Taylor, who somehow persuades public bodies to pay for his 'research' into what we all have to pay to watch (separate issue but..discuss).. is an interesting one.

I happen to think that finding 100,000 fans with a spare £5k to donate to a footy club is a long shot to say the least. Even for a club like Liverpool, but good luck to them and hope they succeed. I just think it is far too late and too big a call. So Liverpool will not got that way....

However...The Rovers? Could we become the first publicly owned Premier League club? £55m when split between 5 - 8,000 fans suddenly becomes achievable - if the Trust were prepared to play ball. Could we find fans prepared to put up £5k over a period of years in exchange for ownership? The Trust could take out money over a long period of time - say 25 years like a mortgage. It seems to me the issue isnt really one of money for the Trust but confidence that the club is safe from asset strippers and is in safe hands who will have Rovers' interests at heart in perpetuity. What better 'owners' than the fans?

Barcelona and Madrid and several other European clubs have ownership based on this type of ownership.

Yes we do have a relatively small fan base. Yes we do have a lack of Russian/American/Ukranian asset strippers circling. Thank the Lord. Is it time to turn this into an advantage? With a small fan base comes a small price (relatively). A benign seller could make it easier for US to do this. US not the USofA. Maybe even Dan W could see this as a way for him (if he is indeed geniune) to come at the head of a small but determined Rovers Revoutionaries.

Storm the Palace. Call for Che Dan.

Am I onto something or is the London Pride from this afternoon suspiciously laced with MDMA.

£5K; That's 40,000 shekels... '40,000 shekels for that, you must be mad!' (with deference to the Life of Brian of course).

Actually it's a tremendous idea & one worth exploring. As we're struggling to reach 14,000+ in season ticket-sales however - each paying something like £250, it might be a long shot.

55,000,000 / 5,000 is 11,000.

Have we got 11,00 fans around the world who could and would want to pay 5k for a 1/11000th stake in the club?

Sorry a key point missed. Is it necessary for the Trust to divest itself of 100% of the club? £26m gives The Fans a controlling share. 49% for the Trust gives them mechanic to pay out the dividends to service the 51% they could hand over.

So could we find 20,000 fans around the world to pay 2,500k over 5 years? Or 25 years maybe? In effect the Trust could donate the club to another Fans trust in return for dividends paid out either by individual share holders collectively or the club.

Why not? How did Barcelona found itself? Why not a new ownership structure for a new millenium?

We need a new solution. There is no second Jack Walker. The Trust wants out. An investor wont invest. As he or she would never ever get their money back.

Any other ideas anyone?

Or is the Anarcho-Syndicalist solution drawn from the Barcelona Civil War militia (1936 - George Orwell) the way forward?

I'm all for that idea, but...

You would be asking ordinary people to find £5,000 and that is not going to happen, It's too much spare cash for fans to find. And even then it would only be the start.

The Liverpool idea is fantasy. You are never going to get that many Liverpool fans with cash - certainly not their own! And when you do raise that what happens if you have got to go back to them because the new Anfield is running over budget?

Fan collectives only work - to a point - when a club is on its knees and needs a whip-round. And while that might save a club it becomes a curse. My own club Partick Thistle were part-saved by fans a few years ago and now they are the biggest shareholders and partially block a potential buyer and progress.

The Premier League is now full of money men who either want to get rid of their in trade for personal safety or political refuge. The game has gone mad, just accept it.

The best plan is to do it right and wait for the rest of the fools to fall on their faces. It could happen.

Ill sleep well tonight.

2.1 get in there.

POP.

Yeah, two points off the play-offs with just 16 games to go...how will Burnley close that gap?

Two more points would put you...still eighth and praying for the Inter Toto. ;)

West Brom out of the way, Watford, Charlton, Ipswich and most of the rest to come.

Bristol City and Stoke to be crushed under the cloven hoof on the travels.

Yeah, that's the season over.

Agreed. Just wish the Trust would see it that way. In Black Jack terms we are on 16. I dont think we should twist. But nor should we fold. Many a pot has been won when the bank goes bust.

Dingles meanwhile have i am sad to say played a blinding gamble. Gone high on an ace and hope it counts double and then blind and gambled not much. But it could still come off for them.... dear God. Would need more than a Revolution to keep the Goths from the Gates then...

Was the quoted price 55million for the club and stadium and tranning facilities?

Its everyones wish that a Rovers fan takes over us but i fear it will never happen. Football is a business and where thes money to be made people will do it, no one wants to buy us :(

Im just happy watching my team in the pl on a weekly basis.

Ditto re watching Rovers in the Prem every week.

Mukulikosko (the chap who caused brfcs.com members to turn suicidal) came on as a 77th minute sub for Ipswich in their win at Sheffield Wednesday today (rare away win) and Koumas got 6 minutes off the bench in Wigan's win against WHam.

Ohh, your point of view has changed. 2-3 months back that would have read,

Two more points would put us...still eighth and looking for 5/6th spot. ;)

Think someone is starting to doubt there bet now , and maybe Coyles ability.

Not winning at West Brom, or even getting a point = Not going anywhere. When you take in to account how "Close" that league is. Also, the dingles are supposedly better away from home.

2700 dingles coming home tutting away, get in there.

Two or three months ago the gap was bigger.

The gap is closing...
