I've been banging on about the transfer window for years now. It's totally needless and as demonstrated this January, only serves to inflate prices and benefit the wealthy clubs. As for the smaller clubs who might need to do a bit of business on the cheap, in order to give themselves a chance of staying up, - tough luck.

What haven't you been banging on about for years now? :P

That wasn't the idea behind it though, I think it was intended to do the opposite.

I'm sure the intention was that richer clubs couldn't just go out a buy a new player if they suffered injuries/lack of form, they'd have to use players already within the squad. Unfortunately this has just meant the richer clubs stockpile players for these situations, so in effect it has probably made things worse.

I don't really think it matters what the rules of transfers are though, the richer clubs are always going to have a massive advantage.

Why not send all the rich clubs to play in China?

Just sticking to the stats.

Fact is I think my Burnley promotion bet is looking better than my Rovers top-six punt.

Sad to say.

On what planet? We are 2 points off 6th and Dingles are 2 points off the play offs. Both clubs if truth be told are slightly weaker than the teams above them and it would take something special to achieve top 6. I'm all for a bit of a laugh and it's clear you think the sun shines out of Coyle's backside, but this is becoming tedious now.

If you seriously think the Yorkshire tribe are better than the majority of the sides above and around them then you clearly aren't as clued up as you appear.

Pks and I were discussing this yesterday. Could European slots stretch down to ninth this season?

Chelsea win League CUP

Two of top six in FA Cup final

Inter-toto slot.

i could be wrong of course.

Will Burnley finishing in ninth get them into the top league?

Did that not happen last year. Not too sure how ninth place would qualify for Europe though unless the team finishing in 8th did not apply.

Chelsea win League Cup giving 6th spot, Two of top six in the final of FA Cup would give 7th place European football.

Sod all this UEFA Cup lark we should be aiming to finish in the top four and playing in the Champions League next season.

Nicko - How can you compare Rovers league position with Burnley's? We are in different leagues with Rovers playing far superior opposition each week.

Four Champions League places, three UEFA Cup places, one Intertoto place.

So long as the Cup places go to clubs above us (that means Chelsea to win the League Cup and two of the three surviving big four making it through to the FA Cup Final or a big four v non EPL Final)....

Then we just need to hold our current 8th and we are already in a European place. :P:brfc:

If you take into consideration that Blackburn is a small town, have minimal funds, have won the League and domestic cup, qualified for Europe on numerous occasions and comparing our attendance average with the population of the town compared with other teams, we are technically the best pound for pound team in the country.

:D

I'm presuming that your meaning that the FA Cup runners up no longer qualify for UEFA cup if they are not in the Premier League. Are you sure?

Not 100%. But I did read that had Gretna won their Cup Final in Scotland last season and remained a first division club, the change in rules would have prevented them from competing in the UEFA. In the event, they didn't win the cup but did get promoted.

I was comparing Owen Coyle's record with yours over the same length of time...If that continues and improves they will be close to the play-offs.

I'm not interested in Rovers finishing 8th. I am interested in them finishing in the top six. On current form I fear that is unlikely.

It amuses me that wishing Coyley's mob to do well is somehow undermining the history and fabric of your club...

Odd.

I am almost certain that the FA Cup runner up would qualify for Europe so long as the winning team has already qualified for Europe through the league. If the runner up has also qualified for europe through the league then an addition UEFA Cup place would be available through league positions.

Oops sorry, not being clear. A Premiership club losing to a CL-qualified Premiership club in the FA Cup Final gets a place in the UEFA.

A non-Premiership club in the FA Cup Final could not qualify for the UEFA Cup irrespective of opposition or outcome.

I think those are the rules now. UEFA got miffed at the likes of Millwall and Aachen keeping big clubs from big leagues out of the competition.

Theoretically it can stretch down as low as nineteenth can't it? i.e. If you're the highest placed club not otherwise qualified for Europe who applies for the intertoto.

We only finished 10th last year and got in due to other clubs not applying.

However in practice, Automatic qualification can only go down to seventh can't it? If results fall in such a way that the two Cup places go back to the League.

The cut-off for appearing in the Intertoto is 12th. If only the 13th or below applies, the Intertoto place gets reallocated so another association gets two places- Romania benefitted this year. That I do know for certain.

Automatic qualification can only go down to 7th as Revige says.

Never heard that before - very interesting - thanks.

Edit: Does the "fairplay" place still apply regardless of position?.
