S15
Is this a rumour for a Summer signing or what? I don't really understand, your insinuating the deal will be confirmed, yet surely it can be nothing but a rumour?

I don't really understand, your insinuating the deal will be confirmed, yet surely it can be nothing but a rumour? The player has been offered around in the past few days, I believe the club are happy to sell at the price quoted, and there is a bidder. He wants his future sorted fast. He obviously won't move until the next window, but the player and the buyer are close to an agreement. He will certainly move. It will make more sense later on... John
Can only think it is Huddlestone, Giles Barnes or possibly Sidwell.... not really thought about it though.
The Harwood Yankee
Can only think it is Huddlestone, Giles Barnes or possibly Sidwell.... not really thought about it though. If the move is happening now its got to be a loan move til the end of the season, with it becoming permanent when the next window opens. My money is on it being Sidwell and I think he's going to... Newcastle.

McClarky
Loan or permanent it makes no difference, they can't play until next season. I think nicko means that the deal will be agreed but won't go through until July. No point worrying about this now as we might have different priorities come the summer anyway. To clarify...it's a midfielder...the deal will be done in the summer...but the player can go, his current club will sell at a set price and his 'next' club are happy to pay it. He would do for Rovers, but the cost of the whole package is a bit scary.
philipl
Given this is nicko's thread I presume he can exercise artistic and journalistic license and write about what he chooses to. No doubt Kilt-knitting for beginners will be a blessed relief for his beleaguered readers. Though it has to be said that Divs 2, 3 and 4 are proving more exciting than the Prem yet again. The Prem is getting a bit like the Cold War, mutually assured destruction and all that. No Manager will launch an all out nuclear attack on the opposition to please the natives because they know some nukes will get through by return. Just one nuke hit is a nuke hit too many so we are seeing bunker football week in week out.

Bazzanotsogreat
Sidwell is my guess He is already on a reported 2.5 million - 3 million season, he wants to go and Grant dosent want him
nicko
Is this the same player mentioned as a long term target for us that we weren't able to sign in January? It's Steve Sidwell...and I don't think he is the first choice for Rovers and the mystery long-term target mentioned. However I understand that he is going to West Ham. Chelsea will sell him, he is totally brassed off and willing to move for the same money he is on. Calls were made last week to offer him round and Hammers are the only ones prepared to pay the fee [£5 million] and the salary. He's decent, but he's expensive. It won't get any easier when it comes to signing players in the next window.
den
Cole is a phenomial signing for Burnley. The guy was world class and remains hungry, and at Championship level he is top of the tree. World class Shillitto? His performances for England were few and far between and very, very poor.
1864roverite
Wham are in serious financial straits so I doub they can really afford to splash 5m on one player, their accounts are already 27m DOWn on last years ! I would like Sidwell at Rovers if we can afford him.
rover2u
Cole was never world class. Just a good goal scorer playing in a team with amazing attacking talent. I dare to say ashley ward or even owen columba coyle would of been a 20 goal per season forward for them! Just a side issue, just noticed that coyle was born in july 1966,not a great year for a scot to be born
OscarRaven
So if a player for example pays off his own contract with agreement from his club. Is he then technically a free agent able to move outside of the window? If so what's stopping his new club appropriately compensating him to offset his large outlay in paying off his contract via his wages? The transfer window is thereby abolished for Sidwell type moves - oh how I wish West Ham would 'test the water!'

LeftWinger
I think Cole WAS world class. He's the all-time leading Premiership goal scorer from open play. He missed chances - but I always felt he was more of an instinctive finisher. He was unlucky with England - he was playing at the time we had a lot of top quality forwards. If he was at his peak now he would walk into the England team. He was also a goal creator - only Ryan Giggs and Dennis Bergkamp have more assists in the Premier League from open play. Alongside Yorke - he was one of the most feared strikers in the world in 1999. Alan Shearer scored 342 goals in 634 games in domestic football in England at 0.539 goals per game. Cole scored 262 goals in 484 games at 0.541 goals per game - even though he didn't take penalties. I'm not saying Cole was better than Shearer - but Cole was DEFINITELY WORLD CLASS. He proved it in the Champions League - something not even Mr. Shearer did.

You can't do it after a window is shut.

He's just going to hold back the progress of Mark Noble. They will now have about five cm's.
