Seems to be the wrong link SAS.

Works now. Might be better on another thread.

Hope your brother makes a full and quick recovery SAS.

" As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see "the River Tiber foaming with much blood." It works both ways of course as it was always going to, but the accuracy of old nockies prediction cannot be denied.

  • 2 weeks later...

107-year-old wiped out by Swat team. Only in the US.

Is that some kind of retaliation to Steve Moss' post? Because comparing a horrifically evil custom (its not even possible to describe it as generously as barbaric given nothing in the animal kingdom would do the same) to the killing of a man who'd taken hostages and was trying to shoot people is pretty ridiculous.

Savages, third world scum. A marriage allowed presumably because the prophet says it's OK, poor kid.

Backward, ignorant people propogating paedophilia, rape and murder under the umbrella of religion.

Makes me sick.

It's an interesting story from one of the world's most violent countries in a thread about crime and punishment. If you are trying to stir the pot and cause trouble then you are making yourself look "ridiculous".

I don't see what's interesting about it, America isn't one of the world's most violent countries, and it seems coincidental you posted a link to a story in America immediately after an American posted a link to a story somewhere else. I'm just interested in maintaining a sense of perspective, which would require some acknowledgement that the first story is about 3 million times worse than the second.

Sick? Strange double meaning there. Anybody who condones this abomination must already be sick.

It's my opinion that a 107-year-old (repeat a man of 107) is gunned down in the kind of shootout that would have occured in very few countries in the world but is sadly typical of the sort of incident that seems to be a regular occurence in the US. I'm not interested in other posters or where they are from - I think it is an interesting story that is relevant to this thread. Now if you want to keep sh*t stirring please carry on.

Who cares how old he was? He'd taken people hostage and was repeatedly firing at officers. You should know from my topic on Ian Tomlinson that I am easily angered by excessive force by police. Well in my opinion this bloke sounded like dangerous scum, regardless of how old he is, and they did what they had to do. You wouldn't even get a 107 year old man firing a gun at people in the vast majority of the 102 countries with a higher homicide rate than the US, because those countries haven't advanced enough to provide their citizens with that length of life. So the other way of looking at it is its happily typical that active centenarians seem to be a regular occurrence in the west, and able to continue to participate in society for good or ill.

Who cares how old he was ? Well, just about every news organisation on the planet - type the key words into google and find out. A 107-year old involved in a gunfight is an extraordinary story. Don't bother trying to get a job in the media - you obviously wouldn't know a news story if it hit you in the face.

I'm amazed that Jim thinks the man firing at police is worthy of any sympathy. Age does not equate to virtue. The police tried negotiation, they tried gas, and when they finally went in after him, the villain was shooting at them (as he had done throughout the incident). I am impressed, however, that he had that much fight in him, even at 107 (though if I ever get to that age I'd save my energy for attending soccer matches, not shooting it out with police).

And though I hope it doesn't cause Jim to much heartache, the Court of Illinois (Obama's home state) has just ruled a citizen has a right to carry a weapon outside the home. http://www.volokh.com/2013/09/12/illinois-supreme-court-second-amendment-protects-carrying-outside-home/
