[Archived] What Would Your Premier League Xi Be?

Recommended Posts

I was musing on this last night and thought I'd start a topic on it today.

If you had your pick of every player in the Pemier League, what would your team and subs bench be? This isn't a matter of just picking the eleven best Premier League players, but thinking of a balanced squad with players that would compliment each other. For example, Scholes and Lampard just wouldn't work together in the middle; it might not be a great idea to have two attacking wingers unless you have a five man midfield; Defoe and Bellamy might not give you everything you need up front etc. You can play any formation and chose as many players from one team as you like. There aren't really any rules other than they have to play in the Premier League and in the position you assign them.

It might be a case that everybody's team looks almost identical, but I thought I'd give it a shot and see what people think.

I'm going to think about mine while I do some work (not really a good combination) and see what people have when I get back...

I'm assuming this is based on what level the players are at now - and not their peak (ie. Scholes would have always been in mine - but probably past his best now).

GK - Friedel

RB - Sagna

LB - Evra

CB - Vidic

CB - Gallas

RM - Ronaldo

CM - Fabregas

CM - Essien

LM - J.Cole

CF - Torres

CF - Adebayor

Strangely enough the only Rovers player other than Brad that came close to getting in this team was Emerton - due to a lack of top quality right-backs in this country at the moment.

Another challenge would be to pick a team of players from outside the "Big 3 + Liverpool"

GK - Friedel

RB - Johnson

LB - Lescott

CB - Dunne

CB - Distin

RM - Bentley

CM - Arteta

CM - Barry

LM - Young

CF - Santa Cruz

CF - Berbatov

I'm bound to have made some glaring omission from both of these teams.

Sorry, forgot to mention, yes this is a current Premier League XI and not an all time one.

Mine would be:

Cech

Arbeloa / Woodgate / Vidic / Evra

Ronaldo / Essien / Fabregas / Giggs

Gerrard

Torres

Bench:

Friedel

Richards - versatility

J. Cole - to help switch to a 4-4-2 if needed

Arteta - impact player

Flamini - to help defend a lead

Drogba - aerial power

Defoe - impact player

I would agree with that, except maybe Carragher in for Gallas. Rooney for Adebayor as well.

Sagna - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra

Flamini - Essien

Ronaldo - Gerrard - Rooney

Torres

Subs:

Friedel

Carvalho

Clichy

Fabregas

Joe Cole

Lampard

Drogba

I would agree with that pretty much exactly. Man utd have never been hailed as much of a defensive side but the Vidic-Ferdiand partnership is scarily strong.

Only difference for me would be having Fabregas instead of Flamini.

Yes; Emerton from your second team. :)

--------------Cech---------------

Essien---Vidic----Terry---Evra

------Fabregas---Gerrard------

---Hleb----Ronaldo----Rooney

-------------Torres-------------

Interesting that you've included Hleb because I also really think that he's a gifted player. The only thing he lacks is a bit of arrogance to dominate a game like Ronaldo or Torres can. Ability-wise, he's up their with the best.

A couple of names that haven't been mentioned - Martin Laursen and Lassana Diarra. The latter hasn't played enough games, I guess, but if he plays the whole of next season, he'll be a contender.

Laursen is a really gutsy player and very dangerous at set-pieces.

I'm using the classic 4-4-2 formation as it should be against the law to use anything else.

CB: Vidic

CB: Ferdinand

LB: Cole

RM: Ronaldo

CM: Gerrard

Wow you must like injured players in your starting XI. cant see how you justify naming Bale & Bellamy especialy when they havent played a dozen games this season.
