[Archived] Rovers Takeover Thread

Recommended Posts

I hear that Chris Ronnie spoke at a meeting in Manchester ysterday for a magazine called The Insider - and was quizzed about the possible Rovers takeover bid. I believe he confirmed his interest.

But if anyone was there or knows someone who was feel free to pass on the info - and the rest of what he said.

Sorry for the obvious question, but, have you contacted the 'insider mag'? afte all they WERE there.

It was a corporate function rather than a press conference...obviously not invited. ;)

The magazine is either called The Insider or Soccer Investor. One way or another it was in Manchester and Chris Ronnie confirmed that he wanted the club in a Q and A session.

I just wondered if anyone was there...

Rovers earn 40.2 Million from tv money this season

An increase of 18.2 million over last season.....add to that the 10 million 7th place money and the overall club turnover.

Is it a possibility that Rovers this season could be looking towards a total income heading towards 60 million?.....thats a damn fine do for a town club folks!!! :rover:

Pompey finished beneath us but got more money because they were shown in more live matches.

That media income points to a Rovers turnover of a touch over £60m. That would have ranked the club 23rd in the world only 2 seasons ago and probably about 30th now.

Have you found anything more on this since last night?

Nicko,

Have you tried this rather well-heeled Rovers' fan? http://themarpleleaf.blogspot.com/search/label/football

Many thanks. However he hasn't written anything and - as a Rovers fan - I thought he would have been only too pleased to share.

Mind you, I think he was the chap who claimed I lived in 'leafy Hale' and had got the Dan Williams story from John Williams.

None out of two for starters.

Maybe he's too busy licking David Cameron's arse.

Turnover will be closer to £50m than £60m stated above - the 7th place prize money is included in the TV money figures not additional to it. Gate income is less than £10m and commercial income (profit) is insignificant.

Sorry, I haven't looked it up but matchday income and commercial income are around £10m each.

Last year's turnover was over £40m (£44m is a number that comes to mind) so an £18m increase in the media income pushes the total to around £60m notwithstanding a £350K drop in matchday revenues (the 25% cut in prices not quite offset by the 12% incrtease in attendance plus associated revenue from having the extra people in the stadium) and £1.5m loss of FA Cup revenues.

Update- here are the numbers:

Because it is difficult to tabulate within the messageboard, I am presenting the numbers in the following way:

2006/7 - 2005/6 - 2004/5 - 2003/4. All figures are in £ millions.

Total income 43.3 - 43.4 - 41.3 - 40.8 includes

Matchday 9.0 - 7.1 - 7.3 - 6.9

Media 23.9 - 25.7 - 21.4 - 21.8

Commercial 10.4 - 10.7 - 12.4 - 12.2

Cannot find the table of 2007/8 Premiership media numbers now but I think we get £42m.

Nicko & others

The forum was a Football & Business Breakfast round table organised by Insider.

Michael Taylor, the editor of North West Business Insider magazine, is one of us.

No doubt he would be asking the questions about Rovers and, as the good journalist that he is, will be keeping the details for either their weekly news email or the next issue of Insider.

Very helpful, thanks.

Any idea when or where we can find any more details?

Hello Nicko, Hello fellow Rovers,

I'm Michael Taylor, a Rovers fan and as the editor of Insider magazine (definitely NOT Soccer Investor) I was involved in the Business of Sport Summit at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester last week. Chris Ronnie of JJB Sports did indeed confirm in answer to a question (from me, as the moderator of that session) that he is actively looking to buy Blackburn Rovers, he is acting in concert with other people known to me, but his interest is genuine and consistent with what Alan Nixon has reported in the papers he writes for and on here.

He offered the caveat that he is a business man who likes looking at deals. It may come to nothing.

Rothschild in London are handling the sale on behalf of the Walker Trust.

From my point of view, as a Rovers supporter, this all throws up concerns. The biggest of which is the waning interest of the Walker Trustees. Our April magazine carried a detailed feature on this by David Conn, author of The Beautiful Game and a regular columnist in The Guardian. If anyone is interested I can send them a PDF of it. Please leave me a message on this site with your email address and I'll send a copy, or I can post it if someone can help me get over that particular technical hurdle.

Cheers,

MT

PS - sorry for the leafy Hale reference Nicko, I was getting you mixed up with Steve Bates

Hi michael, first of all welcome to brfcs and thanks for taking the time to come on here.

A couple of questions though,do you know why Chris Ronnie would be interested in taking over Rovers? (Because if it is to make money then he would be wasting his time!)

Also is he actually a Rovers supporter and do you know of any plans he may have for the club?

Apology accepted.

Cheers for the info and the confirmation.

I don't know where this one will go, but Chris Ronnie is no fool.

I'd like to see it please as I'm sure would many others.

Rather than inundating MapleLeaf with requests to send this to loads of email addresses is there anyone that can host this pdf somewhere??

Nothing too surprising within the link below. Hughes quite strongly saying no need to sell the club to 4-5 businessman who can barely afford to buy the club, let alone provide significant investment - wonder if he is referring to anyone in particular!

Hughes on takeover talk

Probable a hint that there is NO takeover imminent - more the pity

Hi Michael

are any of our old mates involved in the takeover, such as someone from Halliwells?

good to see you on the MB, and a good publication you edit as well.
