That's entirely different to saying rovers can't afford to keep players.

that is what i ment in the 1st place, the club will sell any player if a bid comes in for a certain player and it met their valuation of the player. Thats why Warnock and Rocky could be the next players leaving the exit door at ewood if the right offer came in for them.

John Williams has done a brilliant job at Ewood Park and long may it continue. Perhaps you would prefer an owner who comes in, gets the club into debt and sends us into administration.

Today, in John Williams and Tom Finn, we have two guys who are shrewd operators and have kept the club competitive without sending us towards adminstration. Personally, I hope they continue in their present positions for years to come.

Your name is Ken Beamish and I collect my £5. -_-

Some of you need to open your eyes, we are slipping towards oblivion under Williams. We need to make a change before it's too late!

We finished 7th out of 92 last season (above big spenders like Spurs, Fulham and Sunderland) and haven't kicked a ball in anger in this one.

Give! It! A! Bloody! Rest!

VinJay has just mailed in to point out that he isnt this idiot.

So...he is reading then?

The thing about Vinjay was he was always pretty eloquent in the way he expressed his feelings, the same as Frisky Jim appears to be. It seems an odd combination to have such a moronic view on Williams and yet be able to write the objections the way they/he does...frankly I'd be amazed if there are two people like that.

And, of course, Vinjay would say it isn't him, wouldn't he?

We have enjoyed following the club in Europe in each of the last two seasons, we have been challenging for Europe on a regular basis recently and if that is slipping towards oblivion please give me more of the same! I take it you weren't around in the early seventies or you would know what a real slide towards oblivion was really about.

I think you need to get a grasp of reality or have you got a spare 50 or 60 million to invest in the club?

because it's the truth i am affraid and it's about time some people on here realise this, if Rovers recieve a big fee from one of the big clubs for one of our star players we sadly can not say no to them beacuse we quite simply can not afford to reject such a big offer.

Absolute rubbish.

We would only sell if we thought by taking the money we could strengthen the team overall. We are in the fortunate position whereby don't HAVE to sell anyone because we need the money.

This is purely my own personal view but I would imagine if a bid of 30m came in for RSC I would imagine we would probably sell because we felt we could strengthen the team overall with that.

If a bid of around 18-20m came in, I would imagine we would resist a bid of that level unless we thought we had unearthed a sensational prospect who we could adequately replace him with at half the price etc.

There's no way we would even consider selling him at the 10-12m figures being bandied around imo.

I've said till I am blue in the face that the club should have an equal or better replacement lined up or even here BEFORE players are allowed to leave for other clubs. Mark Hughes managed that simple task to perfection! Right now I feel like we are in the middle of a fire sale.

Just a point can anyone tell me why we should give any player a contract? The good ones flerk off at the drop of a hat without backward glance whilst crappy ones and sick notes stick to the club like sh1t to a blanket.

I'd be interested to pay em all a limited basic as squad players with players who are actually selected for the 1st team to be on a kings ransom.

Uh, he may have had someone in mind, but there was more than one situation where he let someone go, no doubt for valid reasons, and didn't have the replacement already at the club. Savage (c'mon, no-one's buying that he planned to start Moko all the time surely!) and Bellamy are but two examples.

Yes, Bellamy had a clause in his contract and was determined to go. Bentley was determined to go. Savage did go downhill - it remains to be seen if Brad does similarly but at the end of the day we have a replacement and if you don't think it's good, at least you could say it's not bad.

Cold hard cash :) Because of their contracts we get that for them - if they were free agents they could go any time they like. In the business world you can give notice - it's similar in football, you can say that you want to leave.

That's where it all comes down to good management from the chairman to the coaching and scouting staff . Good prospects get long contracts to safeguard against predators - it's a necessary evil . It looks like disloyalty when a player signs a deal then buggers off 5 minutes later but that's the way it works .

Personally I've got used to the idea that a player stays for a couple of seasons then moves on . If it's done with a bit of dignity and maturity ( ie Friedal) I can live with it as long as they always give 100% when they are here . Lucas Neill was OK in my book whereas Bentley can only be ranked alongside the likes of Barry Ferguson . McCarthy is a nobody as far as I'm concerned ; I'm sure Cruz will handle the situation better when his time comes .

Your idea about basic salaries bumped up by mega bonuses based on appearances sounds OK but the players have too much power to fall for that . The big clubs wouldn't buy the idea - they don't need to .

Who replaced Savage at the time of his transfer ?

As somebody has pointed out - we have effectively replaced both players that have left. Though our new South American Wizard doesn't play right wing - we do have players that do - maybe not ideal players - but not the end of the world if we can't sign anyone.

It's the truth? You're basing that on nothing Gazz. Rovers have themselves said on numerous occassions that they don't have to sell their players. Don't you remember that?

This is something that concerns me Den - and from reading your other posts recently I get the impression you'd agree. There seems to be more and more coming out of the club these days that is proven to be inaccurate/stretching the truth/downright lies, and I for one don't like it.

I've long since known that we were never likely to break back in to the big time in this league. The thing that always comforted me was that I could be proud of the way our club conducted itself, in the face of so much bad publicity from the teams around us. Blackburn Rovers and Mark Hughes were a perfect match - I don't think either has ended up in a better relationship than the one they had together.

Williams is restricting the potential of this club by his actions. It has led to the departure of Mark Hughes, Brad Friedel and David Bentley this year. It may also lead to the departure of Santa Cruz and Warnock. I'm not prepared to shrug my shoulders and accept that, Williams is the opposite.

What actions are these? Out of interest.

How can you possibly say that unless you are privy to Rovers accounts? That decision is for Rovers Management to make ( i.e JW and the board with inputs from Ince) and nobody else.

Everyone can be privy to Rovers published accounts. It costs £1 from companies house.

A commentary is available on these forums by Phillipl, and regardless of your opinion on his interpretation the numbers are there.

We are and will always be a selling club. As soon as a player gets "too good" for little old Rovers then its out the door. If we had the ability to hold on to our stars then we could build something truely great...

Yip, I said this when we signed Santa Cruz.Players will always see us as a shop window.

It's a sad state of affairs but that's the way football has gone now.

Generally speaking, all clubs are selling clubs to those above them - it's no different for anyone else apart from the top 3 or 4. The ability to hold on to your better players appears to be getting increasingly difficult as the years go by IMO and I think this is down to the modern world culture of aggressively concentrating and improving your own career (possibly spurred on by players' agents). It's a shame it's crept into football.

Capitalism is a wonderful thing.

Unless the player loves the club as a child it is hopeless to try and hold onto them.

And so it will go on.

More managerial whining from Moyes; once more putting his own ambition before the fans (who would presumably need to fund such largesse) & the club, who are already mortgaged up to the hilt.

The more I look at Hughes's smug expression at the Manchester Council Stadium, (who similarly agitated behind the scenes for an influx of funds via the quest for the 'takeover'), the more I appreciate how the trustees, club &/or JW didn't cave in to this mans rampant ego.

Rovers successfully resisted Hughes's thinly veiled threats to leave if we didn't mortgage the future well being of the club to satisfy his personal ambitions (he would have left us anyway).

You've got to wonder though, what will be the long-term future for Everton if they continue to appease Moyes endless demands for cash.

Of course, if Ince fails to reproduce the success that Hughes achieved the club's financial position will take a dip - less TV revenue, lower crowds and less place money. Personally, I think giving Hughes a few million in January would have been less of a gamble than the path we have chosen. However, if Ince proves a success then no harm will be done. Whatever happens, it should prove to be an interesting season one way or another.

However, you can understand why Hughes and Moyes demand more money. Ultimately, the fans expect them to compete in the Premier League and if they fail it's their jobs on the line. Sadly, without money there is no chance of breaking into the top four and probably the top six in future. I don't think it's ego, simply the realism of professionals who know that in the Premier League the days of achieving success on a shoestring budget is fast becoming a thing of the past.

Liverpool is an interesting place with a big but declining population and very low income per head. Manchester's economy is over £50 billion (considerably more than Glasgow and Edinburgh combined). Liverpool is about £6 billion - believe it or not behind East Lancashire.

Both Liverpool Clubs have huge demand for success without the inherent money in the City to provide it. Liverpool rely on, and unlike Everton, can rely to a limited extent on overseas support/non Liverpool support and commercial money. However they are in effect not a viable 'going concern.' They are spending the owners money and money they are hoping to earn in the future. If - and it's by no means clear cut - they do get a big stadium they will be able to bring in some of the money through gate revenue but even with half the seats and corporate side sold to 'non scousers' they won't be anywhere near the revenue of the two big London club, Chelsea and Arsenal and possibly not even Tottenham (and maybe even West Ham). They are in schtuck and relying on spending owners money for a long time if they are to remain top four four at LEAST five years.

Everton is a completely different kettle of fish. They are the 'Liverpool' peoples club and supported largely by local. They have unquantifiable debts and even a full 60,000 stadium would not bring anywhere near the revenue even the current Anfield setup. And as I do work sometimes at Everton I can honestly say they are not convinced themselves they can fill it in Kirby - if it ever gets built. I think the moving on of the Chief Executive has more to it that it seems. The opening up of China has not happened and the good gates at Goodison not only won't produce huge revenue (much better than Rovers though) but a good proportion of that will be debt interest - so net they are probably competing finacially with the likes of us.

Football defies financial gravity in many countries with just one or two really viable clubs - we are heading the same way and unless their is a general rationalisation something akin to the housing market or the 'world product' we have created is supported from other than the fans pocket we'll end up like Italy or Scotland.
