 You're happy for Rovers to be a stepping stone club? OK, it might be that we actually ARE, but it doesn't mean that we should encourage it!

Let's face it, we all wish players like Santa would come to Rovers for what we are - a club with a great history, tradition and prospects. When we lure them solely by £££s we're going to get heads turned in the Summer when they just want more. I know this will never change but how I wish it would!

This may be an unpopular viewpoint but I'm more than happy to be a stepping stone if it means we bring players in get a good return from then and sell them on for a large profit. Rinse repeat.

Doing this over time will improve our foundations as a club and allow us to build.

People should only leave when we have an equal or better replacement.

Wrong IMO. Players should be sold at the peak of their value. There is a world full of players out there and plenty of a class that we could look bringing in and having a similar effect. Lets not forget that some of our best players have been out of the picture at there previous clubs. Even for the top teams I think the approach is correct, you just have to be very good at spotting when a player has hit the peak of their career.

Dzeko, Janko, Crouch. 3 players who could all come in for less money with better records behind them and easily be a big hit for us, or it could go the Grabbi way. That's why footballs great, its all a gamble. IMO we gambled and lost on Santa Cruz his peak value was either last summer or January.

I agree with Steve Bruce's philosophy at Wigan that they are a stepping stone club, but will use that as a major selling point to get in promising young players.

I really like the way Sam communicates with the fans. There is the ring of honesty about what he says. Too many managers keep things close to their chests and hence we have the endless, pointless speculation that most of us indulge in.

This is a delicate balancing act of course because he has to remain loyal to his players too but I think he gets it right most of the time.

We might have gambled and lost with RSC, but we gambled on selling Bentley without having a replacement in place and we nearly paid the ultimate price for that. This time Rovers have to stand firm with RSC because from what was supposed to be offered in January, the only thing that appears to being lost at present is RSC's loyalty bonus and a replacement needs to be found.

Who says we haven't? I hope someone pays the money but I can't see it happening after his poor year and injuries.

He hasn't really scored any important goals since january. What's to say another player wouldn't have come in and taken us up the league.

Bentley was different for me as he had an ability that is quite rare. To consistantly cross the ball accurately. Santa Cruz is a talented player but there are plenty of others out there who could do a similar job, it's just picking the right one to go with and that's where Hughes got it right.

I still think with the clubs interested in him that £15million is achievable for him. Out of players mentioned if they were as good as him, why are the clubs interested in him not looking at these players. It made sense at the time sticking with someone with a proven premiership record but it has not worked out.

The RSC and Bentley situations were different...

In Bentley we lost a player who had been an asset to the team right up until the end, we were losing something from the team from the previous season going into this season, and we didnt replace him which was a big error.

In RSC, while he scored a lot of goals last season, scored 3 or 4 goals in about 17 games prior to January. We weren't losing anything from the side which was struggling had we sold him, and with the money we got for him we could have really strengthened. Especially considering our striker/midfield injury problems since then, IMO we took a bigger risk by not selling him and strengthening in those areas, luckily it worked out OK but it could easily have not done. I said at the time we shouldve sold him and I feel this has been vindicated somewhat, and I worry a club like ours has potentially missed out on a huge transfer fee.

It would have been amazing to have signed Dzeko over the Jan. transfer window. He has absolutely caught fire since then. Out of our range now, I'd imagine. I'd still hope for Crouch, but I know many on this board don't rate him.

I take your point and agree in the main BUT it all depends on forward planning. WE must be in total control of any given situation. RSC was at the peak of his value in Dec but to sell him and not get anybody in would have been suicide. If we had signed Crouch for example it would have been different. Selling without replacing and the effects on the fans and more importantly the rest of the team would prob have been enough to see us relegated.

Well...had we done that we would've pretty much have been in the same position now since he's contributed next to nothing since. With upwards of £15m in the bank.

We could have accepted the money, not loaned out Derbyshire, got a central midfielder in with some of the money (as thats where needs were even more pressing) and then either got a decent striker then or left it aside. I agree with the principle of replacing and selling though, but I think looking at how things have panned out we wouldnt have gone down had we sold RSC.

That's not that surprising, RSC was fit for a lot of Ince's tenure and injured for a lot of Sam's.

Was about to say the same, he was only really fit under during the 'Ince era'.

He was on Paraguayan National radio station 970 AM the day before yesterday again by the way, saying he expected to move to a "larger more ambitious" club for next season...

Somebody needs to confiscate his phone and passport. This is getting silly...

Apparently Arsenal are supposed to be interested in him according to todays early kickoff commentary. Really? As I have said a lot previously I don't think anyone will offer what we want for him - apart from possibly City if they get desperate. Best case scenario is to try and kick off an auction.

In terms of getting him sold we need him to play two or three games and score a couple of goals. Suddenly it puts a whole different complexion on it. However that isn't going to happen. On top of that he is angling for a move which seriously weakens our bargaining position.

Really rubbish situation to be in. Must be a nightmare for Sam's transfer planning..... I can see this dragging out all summer.
