T4E Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 If the reported fee of £15m+ is to be believed, then those who criticised Allardyce over the Christmas break for not cashing in really should retract their comments. If we get that I will do so gleefully.
T4E Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Just time it right with this bird walking past, two birds with one stone!
tcj_jones Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Hahaha, well that is my usual technique... Come to think of it, that's probably why I'm still single!
alexanders Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I will be happy when this is all over for Roque as a rover.
modes98 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 The real problem is getting in a replacement for Roque mk 1 We have done it with every other striker so I can't see it being a problem. I just hope we get it right at the first attempt. At least if it is concluded now we can get our top target in early.
steven Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 The sooner this oxygen thief nicks off the better. Then we can really start planning for next season.

At least if it is concluded now we can get our top target in early. That's the minimum. Let's get a really good unknown striker that wants to make his name in the prem, and get him in soon.
modes98 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Let's get a really good unknown striker that wants to make his name in the prem, and get him in soon. or move for an experienced premiership striker, with a proven goal scoring record. Costs more but worth the pedigree at times.
LeChuck Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 or move for an experienced premiership striker, with a proven goal scoring record. Costs more but worth the pedigree at times. That's always incredibly hard for a club like ours though. The last time I can remember we did it was Bellamy, and I'm really struggling to think of the time before that without going back to 'glory days' of the nineties. I can't imagine how we could sign a proven Premier League goalscorer without them either coming with some form of baggage (like Bellamy) or coming towards the end of their careers. Either way I'm not sure that would be the route to go for Rovers. I can't see anyone fitting into Allardyce's style better than Janko (6'5, pretty quick, excellent technique), and he would come hungry to prove himself in England. I expect we'll get linked with a lot of target men over the next few weeks, no doubt half of Sam's ex-players will be lazily listed.
modes98 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 We have always sold our top striker and then purchased someone who could do the job, although people moaned at the time. The last big flop was Grabbi. Jansen, Bellamy, McCarthy, Santa Cruz, even to some extent Stead. All came in and did their job in scoring goals for us. Sam has had 6 months to look around and choose his man carefully, lets hope he gets it right

Probably the best option as a target man though a huge risk as its a big step up from the Austrian league. With Di Santo being linked it could be that the on loan Di Santo will be the target man (to replace Roque) and Sam might use the cash to bring in a pacey, skilful striker to play alongside.
tcj_jones Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 If Sam were to be given the finances to get an established Premier League goal scorer (I'd say there's about as much chance as Rovers winning the league next season) as Modes is suggesting, then SURELY it has to be Peter Crouch? Otherwise, Darren Bent.

Cole was a lot more established than Bellamy, and he was still only 30 when he signed. Not a has been yet. I will be really disappointed if we go for an "established premiership striker" as those are either too expensive or massively injury prone. Who could we get for 7-8 million? Crouch would probably be our best bet, but they would probs want more than 10 for him. If we do our scouting well we can get much better value for money abroad.
b12_simon Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Andy Cole? Dwight Yorke? (but agree they had their baggage) Dare I say Robbie Fowler too? Cole fitted that perfectly, including the baggage as you say. Fowler and Yorke had a different category: past it.
Blue n White Rover Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Personally, I hope Roque remains a Rovers player come end of the transfer window. He has everything you want in a striker. He can hold the ball up well, he may not be the quickest but for a target man, he is quick, and he scores goals. With a quality midfield behind him next season, I'm sure he will do as well as he did in his first season over here. Roque has done wrong in the past for coming out and saying he wants to move to a bigger club, but he has never said anything bad about us. He has always said in his "dodgy" interviews that he loves the club and the fans, and recently has just said he would play out his current contract if he couldn't get his move. He is a quality player, there is no doubt about that, and some of the stick he is getting is a bit harsh on the guy. If I remember correctly McCarthy did the same when he wanted his move to Chelsea, I don't see fans still having a pop at him for that.
Grabbi Graeme Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 MEN - Rocky to sign on monday Reading the coments by City fans in that article, it seems that they are not impressed with RSC and are dreaming of E'to and Tevez.
The Rover of Finland Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Reading the coments by City fans in that article, it seems that they are not impressed with RSC and are dreaming of E'to and Tevez. I´d change RSC for Eto'o or Tevez in a sec. Roque is a very good player but doesn´t make City top4 club. With their funds I´d be disappointed too.

Yes, but other than for the cash why would you leave a Champions league club at this stage in the transfer window for city? there's no rush if you are Tevez or Eto'o and other clubs will be sniffing around to see if they can get you. If you are desperate to get out in a week or two then you can always suddenly discover a great grandarent who was a city fan or something and insist you never intended to go anywhere else all along. If the fans were realistic they'd realise this but most seem as deluded as Newcastle or Spurs fans.
