modes98 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Given has to be the most successful ex-rover. Not in terms of major honours but in terms of recognition as one of the best around. I think roque will have a hard time if he moves on. As mentioned past rovers have struggled but players never learn.
Hughesy Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Its the Rovers curse. So much for City wanting to do their business quickly - maybe Roque isnt a target of theirs and is only 2nd or 3rd choice after Bellamy.
modes98 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 maybe Roque isnt a target of theirs and is only 2nd or 3rd choice after Bellamy. Roque is a known quantity but probably overpriced in Hughes' eyes. I would think he is their backup plan that will fall into place should Hughes have not got another target and still have a job in a week or 2. As once put by the great writer Benedict McCarthy 'The grass isn't always greener away from Rovers'
Backroom Tom Posted January 7, 2009 Backroom Posted January 7, 2009 I struggle to think of anyone in the last 15 years that has left us and gone on to be really succesful anywhere else. Though I'm sure someone is about to prove me wrong with a blindingly obvious one. David May won the Champions league single handedly did you not see him celebrate it?
Craigman Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Mark Hughes has just said on skysports news that they had bid for Santa Cruz and it was rejected, significantly higher than the last bid of £12million in the summer.
philipl Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Mark Hughes has just said on skysports news that they had bid for Santa Cruz and it was rejected, significantly higher than the last bid of £12million in the summer. Did Hughes say £12m or was that Sky saying that? City's actual bid last summer was either £6m or £8m despite the press and City BS about £12m. It could be that Hughes said significantly higher than the last bid in summer. Those are the sort of dirty games that club plays.
CAPT KAYOS Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Mark Hughes has just said on skysports news that they had bid for Santa Cruz and it was rejected, significantly higher than the last bid of £12million in the summer. I wonder when they made the bid (or is it the big up Citeh scenario again), as upto yesterday Williams has stated that no bids had been received for him.
LeftWinger Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 David May won the Champions league single handedly did you not see him celebrate it? I saw David May getting interviewed by fans on MUTV a couple of months ago. I thought I'd watch to see if he had anything interesting to say. The best bit was when he was asked if it was true that he had trials with City as a kid - and he revealed he was a big City fan. Then someone else asked who his boyhood heroes were, and he started reaming off City players. He said he chose Rovers over City as they treated him really well. He said no-one even spoke to him at City.
philipl Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 OK as I suspected- from www.skysports.com: 10.09 Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has confirmed that the club have had a 'substantial and improved' bid for Roque Santa Cruz rejected by Blackburn. City have also had bids for West Ham duo Scott Parker and Craig Bellamy rejected, but have not made an approach for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. In other words they offered more than £6m in a telephone call this morning and now they want the Fleet Street hounds and Roque's people to do the rest for him. As this is a life or death situation for the club, I cannot see anything happening which puts our Premier League status at risk irrespective of any bellyaching going on. Sparky effectively saying: "I am the Manager of the richest club in the world but I cannot get anybody to come here to play for me."

Though I'm sure someone is about to prove me wrong with a blindingly obvious one. It's mighty odd that the person that actually did the best was actually the worst player. David May.

CAPT KAYOS Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Whoever the striker is that comes into replace Santa IF he goes, has to have the ability to be able to create his OWN chances As well as also having teh ability to also head a ball ( if we get any wingers that is!!)
Bobby G Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Glad we rejected it swiftly. They probably bid 15 million. I doubt it was 18 million.
CrazyIvan Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I hope that, if the club do sell, we get the money up front. Full payment and not piecemeal as seems to be the wont these days.
tchocky Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Well its time to say goodbye now. The bidding has started, and I doubt it will stop until he has gone. Man City may be trying to give an impression that they will not be held to ransom for their riches, but in the end they will probably get desperate enough to shell out what we want. I'd be pretty amazed if he was still here after the window has closed.
Bobby G Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 He's a goner. But how much. Would be sweet if we got 20 million, of which 17-18 million stays in our pockets.
philipl Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 With Ben Haim snubbing Sam this morning what are we going to do with the Roque transfer money??? It has to be Premier League quality bodies fit and signed before any movement on the Roque front. End of story if the clause is for the summer which unusually Tris and Nicko both seem to agree on.
philipl Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Ben Haim snubbed us? Where is that? The link is on this MB- you have to find it though. It is in the logical place.
modes98 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Official Site Confirms a Bid From CityJust been REJECTED. I would think they have missed out on their other targets then and they are just going to slowly increase the offer until we crack. At least Big Sam now knows the score and we can get on with buying the players we need.
Bobby G Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Id take 20 million or 15 million with Sturridge and Ben Haim.
Tris Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 End of story if the clause is for the summer which unusually Tris and Nicko both seem to agree on. I haven't mentioned a single word to do with anyone's contract, or any clauses. Not this month or ever in the past. Because even if I had the slightest idea about them (which I don't) I would never post anything so confidential in public. Please edit your post.
