[Archived] Lets Have A Permanant Tribute To Tugay

Recommended Posts

Now don't get me wrong here....I have really enjoyed watching Tugay over the last few years and it's s shame we didn't have him at Ewood 5 years sooner.

He's been a good servant to the club and deserves some accolades.

However I think all this permanent tribute stuff is a bit over the job. Many other deserving players have moved on without so much as a hurrah! Rilpey, Wilcox, Berg, Flitcroft (OK i'm pushing it a bit there).

Tugay Kerimoglu -- Pld 168 Sub 35 Goals 10

Yet a player in his position during the Premier League Era who did not ask for a transfer and had the record below passed on without so much as a whimper.

Mark Atkins -- Pld 224 Sub 33 Goals 35 (and 1 Premier League winners medal)

Brad however deserves a very large staue putting up in Darwen town centre. (B'burn's already got Victoria and Gladstone)

Shame on you plastic head for even mentioning the words 'Tugay' and 'Mark Atkins' in the same post. :rover:

Personally I hope Tugay retires to a coastal region of Turkey, opens a bar and spends the rest of his days telling tales of his career to visiting Blackburn fans.

A trip every Rovers fan will have to make at least once in thier lifetime.

As I (and many others have said on this thread if you've read through it) Tugay is the best player I've seen at Ewood (Shearer aside: but that's a lot more complicated) who also managed to give 100% every game, didn't get into the press for saying stupid things and had the best relationship with the fans I've seen.

The guy's a true gold standard Rovers' legend.

It's all relative to how long you've been going down to Ewood.

You, still being wet behind the ears think he's the best you've ever seen, fair enough.

He wouldn't get in my top ten and as for my ole man, who still has a season ticket, he probably wouldn't get in the top twenty five.

Good player ,yes, but not exactly a legend.

Well I've been going since 1970, so hardly wet behind the ears.

You should know that Simon Garner is the true legend from that period!, and still is.

Also Eamon Rogers was the best ball player bar none!

Well AggyB everyone is entitled to their own opinions of course. I have been watching Rovers since 1958 and Tugs is certainly up there in my list of the best players to have worn our shirt, with obvious pride on his part. My first and still my top hero was Duggie, but Tugs is without doubt one of the best pure footballers I have ever seen. Seeing him walking round the pitch on Saturday after the match, certainly brought a tear to my eye, at the thought of maybe never seeing him play for us again. (It appeared to bring a tear to his eye also)

As an aside, I heard Dean Saunders on Radio 5 Live the other night saying that Tugay was the greatest player he had ever played with.

I would love to see your ole man's top twenty by the way. There is obviously some real gems in there.

I was too young to be able to comment on Douglas at his peak and the other ball wizzards of the '60s.

But the players who have made me gasp with their ball skills all over the park are Rogers, McKenzie, Bohinen and Tugay.

Wingers are in a different category but Sellers, Brotherston, Ripley and Duff all made me look forwards with huge anticipation to watching them.

Yes Garner is the true legend but Shearer, Sutton and Bellamy were uncontainable when the mood took them.

For the first two or three years he was here he was in the press saying how he'd like to play for a bigger club etc etc..

It's only when his legs went he became truely content.

He has been a great player for us, but alot of the suggestions in here are OTT.

Typical Blackburnians! Even one of the greatest of Rovers' players, who looks to be leaving, isn't immune from some punches below the waist.

I don't remember much in the press from Tugay, not that wanting to play for bigger clubs is a crime in my eyes. The fact is that he stayed and played football the way I like it, in a way that no other Rover has done. Put him in a Portsmouth shirt and he'd be King Dick no doubt.

It was a typical non-story (didn't Toogs comment on Newcastle being a good club in a rather nice bit of diplomacy) and one that fans twisted to "get rid of him now!"

This was a rebuke Tugay staying. No wonder he's hardly ever done interviews when a throwaway comment gets blows out of all proportion.

Thanks Bill. The Newcastle link was the only one I could remember. Unless you can get some evidence Shilo, it looks like another crap line from yourself.

I remember after the Man Utd League Cup semi final he got MOTM (1-1) when he was interviewed he said ''I would love to play for Manchester United if the manager would allow me.''

I'm not even going to be drawn into this with you Melleliu, as you reek of middle age ###### reaching crisis point.

I think Tugay has been a great player for us, but so was Hendry, Duff, Jansen, Shearer, Berg, Friedel, etc etc, as were the older players I never got to see.

The thread is discussing should we have a permenant tribute to Tugay personally. I think it's a pretty fruitless topic, so I'm giving an opinion.

Ps. I'm not a 'Blackburnian.' And no, before your razor sharp whit reaches 5th gear, I'm not from Portsmouth.

C'mon Shillitoe don't get all shirty with everyone. You really did set yourself up you know by gobbbing off about Pompey so long and hard like they were the next super club in the making. If I were you ..... taking the current league tables into consideration..... I'd really consider some sort of retraction. As Greavsie used to say 'it's a funny old game mate'. :rover:

Middle aged with a nice glass of chilled French wine actually, but thanks for the concern.

The following thread: http://www.brfcs.co.uk/mb/index.php?showtopic=11229 makes interesting reading. For the best CM in Rovers history, I don't even see a mention of Tugay in re-reading the first 5 pages (though I love that Tris said Ferguson should be included in the top 15 for voting!!). I know it was 3 1/2 years ago, but he within this time, his best years have been behind him (in fact, I remember the 04 and 05 seasons everyone complaining about him always passing to his "invisible friend"). Not quite sure what has changed in this past time to make him one of the alltime greats, and more deserving than about a dozen or so other players, including any that actually made the alltime team.

I do agree with Abbey that a ring of honor would be a good idea. It would be able to honor all of our legends, including Tugay.

(Though maybe we should name the urinals after such greats as Grabbi!)
