RibbleValleyRover Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Brown said at PMQ's that he was doing everything in his power to cut the price of petrol for example meeting OPEC. What seemed to slip his mind is the 80%+ of the cost of fuel is tax and duty, No chance of those money grubbing barstewards cutting that as the treasury must be raking it in.

Eddie Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Horrible being a politician, you can never really win. Example: You have to keep oil prices down but then take the enviroment seriously.
cletus Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Horrible being a politician, you can never really win. Example: You have to keep oil prices down but then take the enviroment seriously. Oil prices & enviroment aren`t related . They are just a good excuse to hike the prices up!
Paul Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Paid £1.25 at the M61 services last night, didn't realise how much it was until the tank was full

You have fallen for the governments con tricks! ie try to convince the general public that taxing everything in sight that has emmisions is helping the environment.
Biddy Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Ok not petrol related but I watched Jeremy Paxman having a go at David Milliband about the new proposed Coal Power plant that is going to be built. He asked the question that in this government of eco-friendliness, there is surely no way this can be built without having 100% carbon capturing devices fitted from day one. Milliband would not answer the question directly and suggested it would go ahead regardless. Also asked about the 3rd runway at Heathrow and his stock answer was Air traffic is only 7%, homes account for 35% and we are tackling that. So yes, let businesses and money making get away with everything but tax the ###### out of homes in the name of the environment.

Far to many people live and work in T Shirts all winter and turn up the heating to compensate. Building heating regs are set too high as well. imo (and similar with food) home heating has been far too cheap for far too long.
AlanK Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 107.9 yesterday at asda, wtf this time last year it was 87 ish Asda is 1.17 down here!
jim mk2 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Paid £1.25 at the M61 services last night, didn't realise how much it was until the tank was full Never mind, claimed it back on company expenses eh ?
thenodrog Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Never mind, claimed it back on company expenses eh ? Why shouldn't he? Paul drives miles every week on company business! You sound so jealous but I can tell you Jim that driving anywhere during the week nowadays is sh1t! An absolutely dreadful way to make a living. When he's drawing his last breath Paul will regret all those hours, days and weeks of his life wasted behind the wheel. You need to think things through a little more before you spew forth your silly outdated socialist bile.

I have thought it through thank you and I object to people running round in company cars at my expense. It's obvious from Paul's post the cost of petrol took him by surprise ; those of us who have to pay for fuel out of hard-earned taxed income know better.

It's your own fault for voting for this lot .... it was only 55p a gallon when the Tories were in charge. btw it'd be interesting to see this updated, it suggests that Labour are the party of fuel price increases. Unlike Jim they must love company vehicles ........ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3776913.stm

You have fallen for the governments con tricks! ie try to convince the general public that taxing everything in sight that has emmisions is helping the environment. Basic economics would say that higher prices will mean the product will be sold/used less. Now to a certain extent this can't be true with oil as everyone needs to get around and we don't have many alternatives, but it will still reduce the usage. Now I'm no expert when it comes to the enviroment, but I'm pretty sure it is fairly harmful stuff, so the less it is used the better off we are.

That's right, so why do the Governments still give type approval for vehicles that will exceed the national speed limits, therefore wasting fuel?
Eddie Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Because the public in general are stupid and Jeremy Clarkson would stir them up into a frenzy.
yoda Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Because the public in general are stupid and Jeremy Clarkson would stir them up into a frenzy. I think you will find that it is because they will lose to much fuel tax revenue, When did Jeremy Clarkson get elected and when did the government start listening to any one? And don't call me stupid!, or the gloves will come off!
Paul Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I have thought it through thank you and I object to people running round in company cars at my expense. I run around in a company car at my company's expense not yours and pay £000s in tax for the privilege. It would be more tax efficient to buy a car and charge the company 40p mile but I chose not to do that. The government allows one to make a profit on the 40p a mile claim and I agree that is at your expense, and mine. It's obvious from Paul's post the cost of petrol took him by surprise ; those of us who have to pay for fuel out of hard-earned taxed income know better. Yes it did because I rarely buy fuel at motorway services knowing they are very expensive. Having done 50+ miles with the light on it was time to stop!!!! My usual choice is Tesco or Sainsbury for the price and the club card points. I prefer Tesco because their points convert to Airmiles.
Paul Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Why shouldn't he? Paul drives miles every week on company business! Not any more but it used to be horrendous. The roads are so bad we have almost stopped visitng customers and do everything by e-mail etc. Commuting is so bad I now either use the train or work from home whenever possible. I don't regret them, but I won't do it anymore as I have better ways to spend my time.
Flopsy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 And don't call me stupid!, or the gloves will come off! Its May and 23 degrees C outside, what the hell are you doing wearing gloves? Are you a premiership footballer?

SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Seems to be rising weekly folks, how long before WW3 breaks out over the price of oil? Have a nice day
thenodrog Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Talking to a bloke who owns a local oil distribution company at the weekend and I asked him where we are going with all this. He told me that 12 months ago Goldman Sachs predicted oil would pass $100 a barrell and the industry scoffed at them, he says that they are talking of $150 now in the next few months and no one is mocking this time!** In real money that would put 20-30ppl onto heating oil and red diesel! God only knows what the white diesel would be then after the governments accumulator tax %age is applied. But my guess (only) would take it way up past £1.60. **It gets even worse here........ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7387203.stm
