Oh dear. No Allardyce. Please. The way Hughes left was bad enough, but Allardyce epitomizes everything our beloved club is not. And I'm truly not sure about Shearer either, too many tears have already been shed in this household on his account.

Candidate A - the one who I understand they will talk to and check out his interest in the job is...Alan Shearer.

I think it is a very exciting idea. If he wants it - and has a coaching team -then it would be a big boost. The guy just has something and his title medal is a decent thing to have in his armour.

I don't know if he wants it, but that takes a call from the club which I believe will come. A couple of people I know think he may take some persuading, but that's not for me to establish.

Candidate B - I will have to save for a while. Amazingly no-one has got it despite some inspired stabs.

The only further news is that I believe Sam Allardyce has already met John Williams. That's yet to be confirmed, but I'm quite confident on the info because of the source. I don't think it means he is getting it, but he is obviously in the frame.

I don't think there is a short-list yet but an awful lot of work is going on...

Thanks for the info nicko but that's bad news all round as far as I'm concerned.

Shearer could end up an unmitigated disaster and he certainly wouldnt take us to the next level, and most of us can't stand Fat Sam. And a manager without support of the fans is a recipe for disaster too.

Let's hope this foreign contender is a good one.

Has he managed outside of the Premier League nicko?

i dont understand why many people wouldnt be happy with sam allardyce

with what we have ie limited funds-he has proved he can cope.

at bolton he did a brilliant job

shearer would no doubt jump ship to newcastle if it ever became available in the near future.

As much as I adored Shearer when he was a Rovers player the things that bother me with appointing him as the next Rovers manager are - 1) He could be a complete flop and we get relegated and he leaves at the end or before the end of the season 2) We are mediocre and he gets sick of the"lack of resources" and leaves at the end of next season 3) He does well next season and leaves to manage Newcastle who will decide that reappointing Keegan was not such a good idea and that Shearer is now the ideal candidate. I can only see him as a short term (one season) appointment whatever the outcome!

You have to keep mind these might be just a couple of candidates, plus you don't know who might contact Rovers and make an enquiry.

Didn't i read somewhere Hughes was out sixth or seventh choice?

I recall reading that Rovers went through the following process last time-

50ish candidates worthy of consideration (including those the club had enquired to see if interested)

There was a longlist which I've seen suggested had either 12 or 20 names from which,

6 or 7 were met seriously and quite probably more than once, then

3 or 4 shortlist

Hughes

I believe Dowie made it to the final 3 or 4- anyone remember the others who made it right to the end? I think Newell fell when it went from 6/7 to 3/4.

A name for the foreign person with EPL experience- Roberto di Matteo?

I'd be very worried about getting Shearer. Was a good player but that doesn't mean he's that clued up on the game and it all comes back to Newcastle with him. When he had the chance to really become one of the best players in the world he chose to go to Newcastle.

He hasn't been doing his coaching badges and I think his approach to the game is old fashioned. Hughes modernised us and had the most qualified backroom staff in the country. Shearer won't know the first thing about that. He hasn't studied it because he knows the Geordies will want him whatever...

And Lechuck, name more than 20 managerial jobs anywhere in the world better than Blackburn Rovers.

I can't really be bothered doing that. The fact that we're in direct competition with nations as well (managers never juggle club and country) means there are far more than 20 though.

Your post makes it sound like we can pick from the cream of Europe. The reality is we're looking at people who have either a] never managed in the Premiership before, or b] have failed recently and are looking to rebuild a reputation.

No manager is going to leave a successful club in one of the top European leagues to come here. I'm not trying to play down the club, it is a very good job for the right candidate, but we wouldn't be having arguments over Paul Ince and Sam Allardyce if it was one of the world's plum managerial jobs.

Okay so I went through that whole list of foreign players as I have nothing better to do

And I did not find one name who I thought could satisfy nicko's criteria, granted there might be ex foreign players who are managers who I didnt have a clue about, or this figure may well be an ex-coach.

Closest I could find was Zola but he's Italy's u21 coach.

Will be interesting to see who it is....
