[Archived] Nicko's Thread Part 3

Recommended Posts

Ideal candidate in my view - I did a lengthy post on him yesterday on one thread.

I've been checking Dagbladet for the last few days for any possible rumours - I'll have a look now!

In the report Henning says he is doing well enough at Lyn and under contract there for the remainder of the year. He is keeping tight lipped, saying that if he commented directly he would say quite a lot. In general he adds that he has belief in himself as a coach and is not scared of testing himself.

There is nothing yet on Lyn's website.

He has had two mid table finishes with Lyn and this term they are also mid table. Not very well supported as a team from the capital but they appear to be well run and I suppose they flatter sometimes to deceive. Last season they thrashed the eventual Norwegian champions, Brann, 6-0. They have also had the upper hand for many, many years against their city rivals (and bigger club) Valerenga, who just cannot beat them.

Nothing spectacular then, but steady progress and still learning. Young (38), ambitious, intelligent. Got my vote.

i value Nicko's judgement on this. If the guy wants it, and he is the outstanding candidate, then things are looking up.

Worthwhile remembering that Nicko has a job to do...which isnt answering the ridiculous amount of questions we direct at him! Let him give the info in his own time....

Also, it was an EASY decision to leave rovers! Little suprised at that.

Reading his news conference thing, I think we might have to make the entrance to Ewood park a bit wider next year for his head to get through. Easy decision to leave rovers? Thanks Mark you could have lied and said it was a struggle to leave a well run, stable club with some fantastic players and a supportive set of fans who allowed me to develop as a manager.

Indeed, noone is here forever. But if Shearer showed even decent ability as a manager he'd be the #1 target when there was a vacancy at SJP, and that tends to happen fairly often...

If any manager comes and does a good job there is a risk he will move to a 'bigger' club. Better that than appointing duds that no one else would touch and we end up having to pay off.

What did happen to Brain Kidd??

From Wikipedia

An official statement on Lyon's website stated that Houllier asked to be released from the last season of his contract and that request was granted by the president. Houllier also said that that he needed a break after experiencing two seasons with Lyon.[7]

so it could be Houllier that Nicko is talking about, but he wants a break so not sure now lol

I think that emphasizes well that Berg is very good at motivating his players.

He has been struggling with a small sqad with a lot of Juniors and he has done quite well at Lyn.

I think he will be interesting.

On the Candidate B situation.

the club seem interested to talk to him and he is a 'rip snorter' in my view.

So he's Australian then? Either that or Christophe Daum... he had quite the white nose before didn't he? Hounded out of Leverkusen because of it I seem to remember.

I've ignored everything the man has had to say on the topic. I lost all respect for him a few days ago. We can only hope he crashes and burns at City.

You fail to grasp the simple point I'm making: Anything above a total failure and Shearer will be gone the next time the Newcastle job is available. Which could be as early as Christmas, you never know... Any manager doing well will eventually leave (Hughes being a prime example), but Shearer and Newcastle is a special case.

I really don't know where the "dud" and "Brian Kidd" stuff comes from; Signing someone other than Shearer doesn't mean it'll be Brian Kidd. There are more than those two out there. No matter how much of a legend he is, I just don't like Shearer as our manager for the reason above, and the fact that he has ZERO experience. Hughes had only managed internationally, but at least it was clear he was suitable for management. I've seen nothing in Shearer to suggest he is. The things that come with being a legend of the game, yes. But that doesn't cover everything, and no matter how great a player you were, your actions as a manager will speak louder. It's certainly an advantage to have the status Shearer has when you enter management, but it doesn't in any way guarantee success.

Very bad news on the way regarding Santa Cruz...

Are you being pessimistic or do you actually know something?

I can't see any of our players being sold until a new manager is in place - unless he's done his knees in while water skiing!

That was just by pure accident. There's absolutely no need to read anything into that result at all.

Still a bland football team made slightly exciting by the young Nigerian imports who can play a bit. Berg is doing a decent job at it, by all means. It's just that he's been head coach there for a while now and they've never really done much apart from being...well...avarage. He used to be a TV pundit before he took the FC Lyn job and he certainly talks a good game and I believe he knows his stuff. And I don't think confidence has ever been a problem of his. I'm still unsure about what he could potentially do in the Premiership though. One thing that does help is that he has experience in working with limited funds I suppose.
