Cocker Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I think, an Alardyce would be good for Bennie. Really? Benni cant win a header when no one is challenging him for it never mind when every ball to him would be in the air if Fat Sam got in.

LeChuck Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Yep...except Grabbi hadn't won a champions league, uefa cup, league titles, been to world cups or finished second top goal scorer in the premiership before having his role within the side changed. He did score some free kicks in Serie B though, surely that's close enough?

vintageadidas Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Benni is still a class player. He will start on fire next season. Anyways, no appointment until next week at the earliest. Time to get some work done.
dellinsert Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 At least Big Brother starts tonight to take our minds off it all
Lathund Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I think Shearer is the man to go for and I'm countering your 'logic' that because he has no experience he will not be successful. Which isn't what I've said. Hence my frustration with you, since you keep putting words in my mouth.

damo gally Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 For a second I thought Id worked out the mystery B man was, with Laurent Blanc, who was named manager of the year in his first year managing in France, but he's with Bordeux, and Im sure I read the man in question was without a club. Although Ive read that much on here last few days I could have dreamt it!

USABlue Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 If you believe the papers Bentley has only a one year contract and Hughes is going to get both Bents and Roque for a combined £18 million so £9 million each. They do come out with such utter crap most of the time. Would not surprise me, if Sparky does come back for players he IS going to drive a hard bargain, just like he did here.

RibbleValleyRover Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Would not surprise me, if Sparky does come back for players he IS going to drive a hard bargain, just like he did here. I have no doubt he will try, but i can't see Williams letting them go on the cheap.
dellinsert Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Would not surprise me, if Sparky does come back for players he IS going to drive a hard bargain, just like he did here. Wouldn't it be Williams that would've done the bargaining when Hughes was here anyway?
alexjw Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Nicko - any news on rijkaard to chelsea (again) ? Have been told by a number of different people today that this is a done deal ?
AndyC Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Surprised at how many people are advocating the arrival of paul ince! I can see him being a success in the lower leagues where he can bully players and they are still a bit in awe of him, but he neevr struck me as being manager material for a top premier league club, because he would fall out with half the team.
LDRover Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Could candidate B be Dennis Bergkamp? Or Marcel Desailly?
dannyboy1206 Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Would not surprise me, if Sparky does come back for players he IS going to drive a hard bargain, just like he did here. I wonder if he knows of any clauses in RSC's or Bentleys contract
bluebruce Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Too true brother. £30m for the pair would represent tremendous business with plenty of scope for a new boss with good contacts to replace them. I don't agree. Given how many years Bentley has got in him, it would only represent 'tremendous' business to sell him alone at 30 million. That'd be around 3 million for each year he is likely to have in him, most of them at a high level. If we sell him on his own at less than 20 million I will be disappointed, if we sell him for less than 10 I'll be outside Ewood protesting. Roque isn't in a much smaller bracket for me. Losing Hughes, Roque and Bentley all at once can only see us disastrously weakened. We'd need a damned fine replacement manager to make it work, even with 30 million.
bluebruce Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Bentley for 30 million? What world do you live in? *Sigh* I didn't say we would GET 30 million for him. I said it is the only price range that would make me truly happy, given how important he is to our team and how long he has in him. I believe that the market very often ignores a player's true worth in terms of how many years they've got in him. If Bentley were say, 27, I wouldn't talk about such a price range. But the papers are talking about anywhere from 8.5 mill (ridiculous) to 15 million. I'd be willing to wager my own money that we could sell him for exactly the same price in 2 years from now (assuming he was under contract...he runs out in 3 years is it?) and having gotten more out of him. We might even get more than his value now, if he continues to establish himself in this vein. Remember that club revenue in the league has rocketed due to the new TV money (to the tune of what, around 30% higher overall income?), and the inflation process has begun to kick in. I repeat, I'm NOT saying he is singularly worth 30 million, I'm just looking at in terms of what, in a business sense, he could be worth to the club. I'd be content if we got 20 million for him, though not exactly happy, pleased enough if we got 25 million, and consider it 'tremendous business' to get more than that (which I know fully well we won't). I'd be a bit disappointed with 15 million, and furious with 10 million or less. Clearer? Edit- I'd also consider it less of a problem if we could get a decent right winger like Lennon or Wright-Phillips in as a swap plus cash deal...I doubt we could lure them outside of making it a prerequisite of a deal for Bentley, and my biggest concern is the yawning chasm in replacing the player who is by far and away our greatest creative outlet.
The Gull Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Rovers will not rush this decision, and I am 100% confident that they will make the decision which best serves the club. There is a big part of me that would be dissapointed if Allardyce got the job but I would give him time and back JW. I am pretty much uninspired by the majority of candidates mentioned so far, a foreign coach with a reputation that may attract star players would be my preference over the dour UK coaches that have been mentioned. My preferences would be towards Laudrup or Advocaat, or why not try for something a little optimistic like Mancini, Zico, Rijkaard or Big Phil to offer them a taste of the premiership and a chance to proove themselves under less pressure than at som eof the clubs that have chased them like City and Chelsea?
Craigman Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Could candidate B be Dennis Bergkamp? Or Marcel Desailly? Now Bergkamp could be possible, is he suppose to be going to help out at Ajax ? It would definitely be sexy football with him in charge.
rover6 Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Is that like when Grabbi said Souness was playing him out of position and he's actually a left winger? Edit: Grabbi has apparently just been released by AC Bellinzona of the Swiss second division. Bless 'im. Don't you think that Grabbi's story would make a fantastic book. I'd buy it, anyway.
Iceman Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Well I think anything less than 10 mill to give to the manager would be so unfortunate, and would again illustrate why Hughes left…if the new manager doesn’t get 10mill +,then that might just explain why Hughes has had enough…as a manager,to try and keep the club afloat with the money we give our managers,is really shocking…People said we would get days like this, because of lack of finances available, and those days have finally hit us…Reality checks are in order now…
