I know that Villa offered 7 million for Milner, Newcastle want around 9.

Either way, he's well over priced! Bentley was mentioned at being a £7m bid (for Spurs or was it Liverpool?) I'm sure I read somewhere today

It does make me wonder. Whilst every man(ager) and his dog are away on holiday before the transfer window actually opens some of (present company excepted) the press are busy bigging up their favourite teams and as ever devaluing ours.

As for the Sunday People - keep your powder dry nicko. I can wait until Sunday to buy it! Won't do any harm will it?

I still think there's a couple of surprises in this. If they're looking at ten Cate types they have set very high standards indeed. They key characteristics appear to be:

- A Very tough character

- High level of European experience

- Very strong managerial experience

- Very Hungry (to the point of starvation with ten Cate)

- Excellent european contacts

That some person spec. A few candidates like this around and Shearers out, Allardyce might get an interview. McClown won't. Laudrup, Bilic if he's interested, I just can't see any others in with a shout. I like Bilic - he seems to have a tough managerial style and like Hughes had with Wales he has a very organised Croatian team but he is very charismatic (can't say that about Hughes). When we got knocked out of the Euro's he came across as genuinely perplexed but very cool. It was like being robbed by a gentleman crook! He can certainly handle the press.

I still think we could be in for exciting times and an unforseen name or two (unlike the Citeh fans I know who are really fed up!).

Is John William on a long term contract tie in? Suspect he's on a few headhunting lists or will be if he gets this right too.

Ten Cate does shout and bawl behind the scenes when it needs it. I don't see that as a problem.

It was going to stop him filling the profile at Chelsea where Abramovich wants a glamourous name and the dressing room is full of peacocks.

I think he would be suited to where Blackburn Rovers are right now - and is similar in many ways to his predecessor.

You can be wrong for Chelsea and right for Rovers...

I would have thought you can maybe get away with shouting and bawling and being unpopular with players at Chelsea because when all's said and done they are still at one of the biggest four or five clubs in the world on some of the best wages. So there's little point in taking your bat and ball home and going elsewhere.

Rovers might be a different kettle of fish. Our better players who would probably be welcomed with open arms at so called "bigger" clubs probably wouldn't take too kindly to regular blasts of the "hairdryer" treatment for no real reason.

Funnily enough, I had a dream last night where Avram Grant's odds kept dropping and he was eventually appointed.

In reality, his odds have stayed relatively consistent and he remains an outset bet. He'd be another high calibre contender.

if i was the chairman id be on the phone offering the croatian f.a. £2m for bilic's contract [to join after euros] and give him the same deal hughes was on, hes had 3 years premiership experience with 2 clubs so knows a bit ,though ive only seen croatia play a few times i was impressed with their style and determination not to mention their technique and flair. I think of the names mentioned for manager hes the best option if we can get him.all we need is an attacking midfielder and a right back after all

Henk Ten Cate is candidiate B, according to Nicko he sounds interested in the job but Panathanikos are interested in him as well.

Some people are reflecting on Hughes and Bowen's comments to the media, and aren't happy.

A quiet day really.

I know nowt about this bloke, can someone provide me with some details to his history/accomplishments/failures. Much obliged

I think you've answered your own question there mate... NO incoming transfers will take place until a new manager is installed.

With the names currently linked, I would be extremely disappointed if Shearer or Ince took over.

Thing is, all a link means one of the following_

- someone's mate says X would be good for the job

- some journo says Y would be good for the job

- some hasbeen says himself Z would be good for the job

There's generally as much substance to a 'link' as someone picking tiles out of a scrabble bag and trying to make a name.

There's not much to quote to be honest. "The Lancashire Telegraph understands the former England captain whose goals famously helped Rovers land the Premier League title in 1995 is interested in discussing the possibility of making a sensational return to the club where he made his name." Blah de blah etc. No direct quotes.

It also mentioned Henk Ten Pints "as the latest figure to be linked with the vacancy" after a story in Dutch newspaper (and I'm not making this up) De Telegraaf. No doubt the reporter was Alan Van Der Nicko.

OK Hughes did an excellent job, taking us to top 10 finishes and purchasing some quality players. HOWEVER:

Look at the potential candidates we have for the job:

1. Cate- comes with some European pedigree, number 2 at Barcelona and Chelsea, won a few trophies in Holland as number 1.

2. Advocaat- just won the UEFA Cup, another top contender.

3. Shearer- big 'wow' factor around him

4. McClaren- I know he has had a bad press BUT he was number 2 when United won the treble, won a trophy with 'Boro and reached a UEFA Cup final and developed the 'Boro youth team, the man is not a clown!

I would be happy with the above because apart from Shearer the rest have WON trophies with teams playing good football, I am genuinely excited by who we get as the above list looks very promising!
