On balance looking in from the outside, he wouldn't be my first choice.

However I do think a lot of people are underestimating Shearer quite a lot.

People may be a little put off by the jovial couldn't give a monkeys attitude of Shearer on MOTD but when he was a player there wasn't a more single minded focused mean son ov a bitch out there.

As the nodrog has said, "Alan Shearer does what is best for Alan Shearer"

I think he'll come to the conclusion he'd be better off staying in the MOTD studios rather than coming here, but if I'm wrong and he comes here or anywhere else as manager in future I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him being a great success.

The other side to the risk factor with Shearer is that if he isn't a failure, then he'll be off to St James Park at the first opportunity. Given theirs and Keegan's recent history, one such opportunity might not take that long to present itself. If it was the case that he'd have to do exceptionally well here for 2-3 years to land the Newcastle job that's one thing, if it's a case of treading water and getting by for 12 months just to wave the "Premiership Experience" flag at Mike Ashley when he comes knocking is another.

Given there are several viable candidates around, I think I'd rather just not find out either way and remember the good times instead.

It would for sure "capture their imagination"; and I'll bet there might be a few more at our first few home games. I wonder if they will still show up come november and we are rock bottom in the Premier League?

i know i'll will be , but why are we so convinced he will fail? i 've had a season ticket for over 20 years i've seen good managers and bad

i suppose the shearer for manger topic will continue for days to come until either he or the club decide against it, it is a credit to you me and others on here , that we can have this debate without resortin to childish comments i wish you good night i have work in about 10 hours time

are english managers any good?, theres not too many successfull english managers working abroad, is there?

How many have been given the chance - come to think of it not manty have been given the chance in England either.

Its no wonder that England have replaced a Swede with an Italian.

Clubs want instance success, there is to much money at stake to gamble, letting an inexperienced manager cut his teeth in a game where the only thing that matters is winning at all costs.

When appointing any manager, experienced or inexperienced I think Rev summed it up with the word "might". Whose to know until you try. Its a big gamble -

If I remember correctly there was a big call for Hendry before Hughes was appointed - would that gamble have paid off ?

Rovers have tried both - Inexperieced manager - Kidd (total disaster) -------- Hughes inexperienced at club level. (success) Experieced manager Woy. Lost it in the dressing room after a a good first season. ----- King Kenny say no more.

Who ever comes in will have to be strong and have the respect of the dressing room - heck there is already signs of discontent there. ie Warnock.

Like any other job - the cv will be read, the interviews carried out, and the best candidate appointed. BUT there still no guarantee that the right appointment is made - that will only be reflected at the end of the season.

I havent a clue who is the right man - I just hope that whoever it is brings entertaining football back to Ewood. Hughes negative displays was allready driving a wedge between me and the team.

Shearer already has a backroom team in waiting with Tommy Craig, the former Newcastle assistant who helped him get his coaching badges and old mate Mike Newell at the ready.

Just as an aside I had always thought Newell and Shearer didn't get on?

Shearer for manager is very difficult. My head says we should be looking for someone with a bit of managerial experience. Earlier I posted I was against the idea but I'm beginning to wonder. My heart is thinking back to the last time we had a really BIG buzz, something to make the soccer world look up and take note. I was in the outside lane of the M62 when it was announced Dalglish had arrived......and nearly hit the central reservation. Alan Shearer as manager would come close to that. It is a long time since I felt the nervous anticipation in my stomach about Rovers, Shearer still has that effect and the emotional aspect of him returning to Ewood could be amazing.

What would Jack do? His favourite son returning? For simple gut feeling the most exciting player I've seen in a Rovers shirt. It could be the right move and with the right back up team? If the story is true and IF Williams thinks Shearer is the right choice this could really set the town and club buzzing again.

Rovers have already been managed by Scotland's finest striker, why not one of England's?

At this point we need big-name manager with a proven record in management, ie Henk ten Cate og Michael Laudrup NOT Alan Shearer, but perhaps to some extent Paul Ince. This is primarely to keep our mosted gifted players at the club, as well as attracting fresh and exciting ones. Whilst having a big name in Lancashire and England, I don't think Alan Shearer (yet) is capable of achieving and uncovering the gems that Hughes was able to. Even though there is an obvious risk of hiring a "big-name manager" to a smalltown, shoestring budget-club like Blackburn regarding the transfer market - (look at Svennis: Spent a fortune on a squad finishing way below Blackburn this season - we cannot afford to spend money on a new Grabbi) - I feel the club is in a position that allows us to take this risk in order to move forward. If everyting goes down the drain, the worst thing that could happen would set us back to the point where Hughes took the helmet, and we'll just have to persuade a Sam Allardyce or Paul Jewell to build us back into a mid-table team.

1) Michael Laudrup - huge name, proven record with a shoestring budget at Getafe

2) Henk ten Cate - big name, proven record at Ajax, Barcelona and Chelsea|

Outsider, but not very likely: Zinedine Zidane - was previously linked with the managerial helmet at QPR, and also with Blackburn as a player back in 95, where Tim Sherwood was chosen ahead of him.

Keep posting Nicko :)

Some interesting stories in the News of the Screws this morning.....

Santa Cruz to United with £10 Million and Saha coming this way.

Samba to Sevilla for £3.5 million.

Bentley to City for £15 Million.

Olsonn to City for £5 Million.

from the article

"And the former England captain - who scored 112 goals in four seasons at Ewood Park - will speak with Blackburn in detail about the vacancy to see if it is right for him as he feels his first managerial job has to be a good one."

You will not get a better job than this as your 1st in management! there are not many jobs in football management better than this one for an experienced manager!

Are all the supporters of Shearer for manager ready for when it goes wrong, his crown will be well and truly dislodged,

be carefull for what you wish for!

What managerial experience did Sparky have before he came to Rovers: very limited as manager of a manky Wales team - not exactly much.

My vote is for Shearer, as long as he has the right team around him.

My wife is a big barcodes fan; and she says she will get a Rovers Season Ticket if Shearer comes, just because it is him.

Santa I can understand but us taking the injury prone saha - no thanks.

Samba 3.5m - we all know he has a tendency to wander around the place at times but most people would pay 5m I reckon

Bentley - say nowt

Olsonn - this is the strangest one of the bunch for me. Hughes has mega money to go and buy who he wants and he chooses to spend the money on Olsonn who isnt really tried and tested. Snap their hands off if true but doubt it very much.

Where to begin?

ALAN SHEARER/THE JOB - has been contacted and is interested in the job. His name will go onto the list that should be drawn up tomorrow. The next thing is to decide who to interview. Some are easier than others, Big Sam is gagging for it , Paul Ince is telling people it's him and Steve McClaren is waving his brolly at anyone looking. Henk Ten Cate will NOT take the Panathinaikos job for a week as he waits for the process to work out. Michael Laudrup has had a mention but I don't know of any contact with him. It's a fair list of candidates - there could be others I've missed - but the interesting bit is how they handle Shearer. Would he be interested in being on a list? Or would he have to be offered the job? That is the next stage...

ROQUE - Arsenal are the club with the biggest interest. I said last week that one of his agents was getting busy and Wenger does have an interest. But it depends on [a] Adebayor being sold and a decision between Roque and Gomis at St.Etienne. Wenger will watch him at the Euros if he plays. Man U have other targets and the Ronalso crisis to work through. Shame for them...

BENTLEY - I believe there is very little chance of him going to Man City.

SAMBA - Obviously unsettled a bit, but he will soon get over it.

TAKEOVER - There SHOULD have been a story in the People, but it might just have been lost in the Barton drama...have to check and re-load that. Has anyone seen a Blackburn 'edition'?

OLSSON - What?

Funny little thing concerning Henk ten Cate in todays Dutch newspapers saying: he didn't sign a contract in Greece yet and that second round of talks are planned later this week.

Is he stalling? <_<

Sorry Nicko you beat me to it, can you read Dutch or something.. :P

I still don't understand the shearer factor. I never saw him play and have never been impressed with his punditry. I don't really believe in this living in the past thing that seems to be creeping in around Rovers at the moment. whilst I'm nowhere near as anti as with Allardyce or McClaren I still don't want him, because what I want is a hungry manager not one who feels he might do us a favour by coming to Rovers knowing that some tv or radio station will have him back anytime if he fails. He can always blame our lack of finances for a lack of success and the Geordie faithful will still want him at St James's Park when the next manager goes wrong. Shearer is in a no lose situation if he comes to us. Rovers are in a very different position.

Always thought they got on like a house on fire those two. Wasn't it Sutton that Shearer supposedly didn't get on with?

I've bought it read through it and not seen anything.

OLSSON - What?

News Of The World. Hughes "wants to lure David Bentley for £15m and is also set to raid his former club for £5m rated Sweish left sided player Olsson, 20." You couldn't make it up. So a bloke who writes for NoTW called David Harrison did instead.

There's also a very good / scathing piece by Andy Dunn on Rovers / Hughes.

Id be happy with Shearer - mainly because I think he would bring some old fans back, attract a few extra, regardless of what people say, wouldnt jump ship in 12 months

How many times did you stick your hand in the fire as a child Hughesy before you learnt that it burned? Must've been a lot.

Big buddies the pair of em drove to traing every morning in Mike Newell's red BMW. It's Sutton and Shearer who reputedly had fall outs. The only way that I would be OK about Shearer is if he was assistant to Newell...... unlikely given Newells prediliction to gobbing off of course.

That sounds unnervingly close to my arguments about certain young players not getting opportunities at the expense of Berners, Mokoenas and Traores.

:rover:

As for Olsson, I'm sure JW would have negotiated a non-appropriation clause of Rovers players with Man City. Isn't that the norm?

But if he didn't, Man City really do need a left back because Michael Ball is pretty poor.

Well we are well and truly in the silly season.

Mourinho spotting an opportunity to grab Gerard might not be too wide of the mark but "Mourinho has plenty of other options with Blackburn winger David Bentley joining Chelsea's Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho on his wish list." (News of the World) ???

Newcastle are about to ditch Keegan and appoint Advocaat and there is a powerful fans lobby at Blackburn forcing the board to appoint Shearer.

Some of you guys feeling empowered then? :D
