From the Times article Paul popped into the Alan Shearer poll:

Having spent the past few days weighing up the merits of several candidates, John Williams, the chairman, is due to meet his fellow directors to-day to discuss a shortlist that is likely to include Ince, the Milton Keynes Dons manager, Stuart Pearce, the England Under21 head coach, Sam Allardyce, the former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager, and Steve McClaren, the former England head coach. There are also a number of overseas candidates, such as Roberto Mancini, the former Inter Milan coach, Michael Laudrup, of Getafe, Dick Advocaat, of Zenit St Petersburg, and both Avram Grant and Henk ten Cate, who worked together at Chelsea last season.

Wow!

...and we are not a big club???

Of those listed Shearer, Ince and Pearce will presumably involve payments to former employers. I wonder if there are others currently in employment who have let Rovers know they'd like to be considered but are keeping it quiet. Would be nice to think Slaven Bilic has done that but I'd guess there are quite a few current Football League and non-English League Managers and maybe some EPL Managers CVs that have found their way through third parties onto JW's desk.

Roberto Mancini??now that might just be the manager that i would like to be at rovers.if not then any of those other overseas coaches, but non of those local English ones.no thank you.Advocaat or Ten Cate would be the best and most realistic options.

But i think the calibre, or rather type, of managers the clubs are after is quite different.

That maybe so, but it IS the high calibre managers that are turning Chelsea down - which in my view makes the Chelsea situation even worse. The club may have money - but it is what happens behind the scenes that people do not like.

When Rovers had Jacks money I do not believe that they ever had a problem getting a manager - they did not have the type of fiasco that is happening at Chelsea these day - most certainly would not sack a manager who was successful like Chlesea and mad city have done.

Mark Hughes has left to pastures new, but this has NOT tarnished Rovers reputation one little bit. If anything it has enhanced Rovers - people are now - at last - seeing Rovers for what they really are - over half the squad are wanted by other clubs - even John Wiliams and the board, who in my view have done a very good job for Rovers.

In my view from top to bottom the club is a good club and when I hear people say they would rip up their season tickets if this or that person was appointed manager, I have to ask do they really support Blackburn Rovers Football Club. Yes there maybe times when the type of football played is not liked - but that is part of the package of supporting a football club.

For many years Rovers were in the lower divisions and the supporters could only live in hope - one day that hope was reached and Rovers were in the top division. Now we are currently enjoying being in the premiership - again we live in hope to be even more successful on the field - but the club is still the same.

How often do Rovers supporters sing 'I'm Rovers till I die' for soem the words should be changed to 'I am Rovers as long as they go along with my view'

I suggest that whoever is appointed as the new Blackburn Rovers manager we support the club, we get behind the team, through the good times and the bad, because that is being a Blackburn Rovers supporter. This small club is better run than a club with loads of money, but NO class as a club.

Nicko,

I see all these rumours going around about J.A Riise in Liverpool.

Do you know which clubs might be interested in him?

I just can't see him being good enough in a club like Rome, Villareal or AC Milan.

I think Liverpool are trying to push up his value - and his very lively agents have a vivid imagination.

I've agonised over this all week, who to choose. However, whoever it turns out to be, I will be there. We all have different views but Rovers is our club, our team, so there should be no question, and I will support whoever is chosen.

I see all these rumours going around about J.A Riise in Liverpool.

I actually think that a confident Riise is a very good player. He'll never be the strongest defensively but at times at Liverpool he has been very good.

But is he much better than Warnock. Yes, Riise can hit a 30 yarder but I believe that Warnock is the better player - which begs the question of why he was lower down in the pecking order at Liverpool.

Anyone who argues that cream always rises to the top are kidding themselves. Luckily for Warnock he got out and joined Rovers. But he could easily have hung around at Liverpool waiting for a real chance, and his confidence would have slumped as he was continually overlooked. His form and development would've stagnated and another injury and he may have been destined to a career in the Championship or lower. This is happening to British players.

Do you think we will appoint a new manager this week nicko ?

It will depend on when and where people are over the next few days...one or two are around, one or two out of the country, some have got other offers.

I think they will come down to a final four or five names today and then find out when they can speak to them.

Shearer is obviously high-profile and sexy, which is why his name is back-page news. But there are others probably on a level footing with him right now.

The current Rovers regime have probably never met Shearer, so they HAVE to sit down and speak and see if they get on.

It's the same with the other candidates, some may be different to what they have heard and be better or worse candidates than you might think.

It's going to be a fun few days and I think there will be a decision by next weekend - or at least a final two.

By the way, it might have been noticed that Shearer's name has put Rovers on the back page and on Sky more than any other candidate. I'm not saying that is a readon to give him the job, but he DOES cause interest.

Anyway, there's a bit of time to get it right and I'm comfortable with the way it is being approached...and I'm not even a fan.

Shearer is obviously ~~ sexy,

There's a word I never thought would be used in the same sentence as Shearer, ludicrously tight trousers or not. :)

Please let it be a proper manager

Oh come on, not even just a little? ;)

Have to admit, the thought about the coverage it is creating must be playing on the board/trustees minds a little. With us actively looking for a takeover, raising the profile of the club is quite clearly one of the priorities at the moment, and what better way to do that than by installing a true England hero at the helm.

I just hope the desire to improve the popularity/image/standing of the club doesn't cloud judgement when it comes to footballing matters.

Go on Nicko, give Big Al a ring and ask him direct !!

Do you reckon you will start to hear how any meeting has gone at some stage tonight ?

Nah, manager/soccer pundit/moviestar who cares, we should sign some former/current hero. How about Tom Cruise, I'm sure that given the proper backroom staff he could do a very good job for us!

****************UPDATE********************************

Just seen on sky sports news that John Williams has denied that he will fly over to Austria to speak to Alan Shearer!

Also over 40 people have applied for the job and they will announce an appointment with the next fortnight.
