LDRover Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 For all the idiots saying; "Remember Hughes did not have a lot of expirience did he?", well NO he did not, and we got it right that time. Does that mean we should play a risky game whenever we appoint a new manager? Krislu, it's a risky game no matter who you appoint. Would Birmingham fans not have been overjoyed at McLeish's appointment? Same with Jewell at Derby? Fulham and Bolton fans were hardly beside themselves when they got their respective managers but they led them out of seemingly impossible situations. I just think this is a risk we should take, given the opportunity.

krislu Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Krislu, it's a risky game no matter who you appoint. Of course it is, just the same as every other investment you make. That said, one have to understand that there are different levels of risk with Shearer = high risk!
bringdunnback Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 According to the LET an appointment will happen this weekend or early next
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 That increases the significance of JW saying he is not going to Austria to see Shearer then. The BBC's Euro08 coverage is not ending within the fortnight so Shearer is in a bigger pickle than Bilic even if he wants the Rovers job. Only so much can be done over a video-link and are the BBC going to facilitate Shearer interviewing for another job? No, the chairman isn't going to say he's going to Austria BEFORE they get to the board meeting to draw up a short list. Sky love knocking down stories - perhaps they should check them first. Mind you, I could say the same for other people. Rovers will HAVE to go and see Shearer logistically. He can't come over the other way. It makes me laugh. It seems Rovers don't like the publicity limelight and moan when they are big news. When they don't get any publicity they moan about being ignored. Maybe some people just like to moan.
Bobby G Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Do people really think if Shearer takes over, attendances will jump significantly???
BuckyRover Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 All those using the "buzz" factor as a reason for appointing Shearer have you considered this? David Beckham as Player/Manager. The marketing boys would have a field day. He probably wouldn't make a good manager but at least the attendances would rise. Good idea?

Head Rover Heels Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 David Beckham as Player/Manager. The marketing boys would have a field day. He probably wouldn't make a good manager but at least the attendances would rise. Good idea? It was whilst watching the Germany match last night that i was explaining the intricacies of our "manager situation" to the missus and that "That bloke in the middle used to play for us, and is one of the possibilities for our new manager" - She asked, "how come David Beckham hasn't gone into management yet?" Suffice to say my answer was quite brief

If JW had not put the dampener on that one, some very strong candidates such as your Candidate B sitting outside the UK would be getting very confused if JW had told them a timeline and that there are no pre-board meeting decisions or favourites. To me the denial simply sends a strong message that the Rovers Board is managing its own process which I am sure is taking into account candidates' availability including other job offers (Ince, Laudrup?, ten Cate?), and existing job commitments (Shearer, Bilic, Pearce?). Rovers met Hughes three times before he got the gig. First meeting could be anywhere but second and third meetings would have to be in Blackburn and quite possibly Jersey- there is no getting away from that.
Guest fernhurstblue Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 It's taken nicko 3,126 posts to realise that Rovers fans moan ..... thought he was a bit sharper than that Just as well we didn't have brfcs when Wilcox was on the wing!!
gumboots Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I don't mind being in the limelight at all but i don't want our decisions to be made based on whether it would be good PR to appoint so and so over somebody else. I want a good manager who might be able to do it again at rovers. As has been said every appointment is a risk but you get fewer risks if you keep calm and appoint logically not emotionally. the emotion comes from winning, not from losing with a legend. If JW really thinks shearer is best for the job I'll back him but I want to feel that has been decided with his head and not entirely either with his heart or from a PR perspective.

We all want that, but in coming 7th last year we overachieved, there's no doubt about that. Hughes knew it and the majority of fans knew it and without serious financial input, Champions league (which is what you must be suggesting) is unattainable. So we are where we are , a second tier Premiership club, regardless of who takes over. That's why I'd like Shearer to get the job, to get the buzz back around the place, for a bit of excitement - there's been none of it for far too long and this is an opportunity that, for me, should not be passed up.

We didn't over-achieve; 7th was the median and the mean of BRFCS predictions of where we'd finish at the beginning of last season.

I don't like being bored either which is why i don't want allardyce but I do want, if possible, to be watching Premiership football the season after next and I don't want to gamble on that any more than necessary.
cn_barlow Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 i think 7th is about right for us at the moment. Just outside the european places. the next step is to get us consistently inthe European places via league position, uefa cup not champions league
Eddie Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 He's right. Did we overachieve based on number of supporters, money spent over the past few seasons, size of town, etc? Yes. Did we overachieve based on the expectations of our manager, players, fans and the actual quality of the squad we had (which then suffered few serious injuries or suspensions whilst many around us did)? Most certainly not.

Most certainly not. If you judge Rovers by size and wealth of the town, we are over-achieving every season we are above the third division. Of course I was judging it by the club and its playing squad. Channel 4 italia pick up on the Rovers/Mancini story.
USABlue Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Hughes performance in his Citeh interviews has certainly shown a very different side to his character and Bowen's comments about them planning their offski for twelve months thoroughly underlines it. Is there somewhere I can find details about these interviews and Bowens comments.
Eddie Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 So Mancini...someone who turned down the Chelsea job...is being seriously linked with us? Who writes this stuff?
Ronin Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 If going by some of the reports in the media, seems like people would rather come to Rovers than go to Chelsea!
novella Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 So Mancini...someone who turned down the Chelsea job...is being seriously linked with us? Who writes this stuff? have chelsea even contacted mancini?
T4E Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 So Mancini...someone who turned down the Chelsea job...is being seriously linked with us? Who writes this stuff? Did he? I thought Roman decided against him?
USABlue Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Thats certainly a different aspect USAblue It was a bit tongue in cheek, I forgot the old thingy
Saf Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 So Mancini...someone who turned down the Chelsea job...is being seriously linked with us?
