nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11676_3669112,00.html I presume, given our current situation, that this is (No swearing please) nicko? I would think so...

BiggusLaddus Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I'm sure we were "close" to signing Oliver Bierhoff around Euro 96 time Not really close. We wanted him, he wasn't interested.
The Gull Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I wonder if a few names will be leaked this evening/tomorrow morning that may put the hacks off the scent and let Williams get on with making the right decision. A decision which could be quite amazing for the club short term, and if it works the long term aspirations of our club. When Jack left this world he left another JW in charge of his beloved club, and he hasn't done a bad job turning us in to a fairly successful modern day football club.
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Not really close. We wanted him, he wasn't interested. Didn't he go to B and Q in the end? I think they wanted to launch a new line in wardrobes.
ultrablue Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Thanks nicko- that's jogged my old grey cells as I had forgotten all that Mancini to Rovers excitement and the James Richardson interviews. you're welcome
philipl Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 you're welcome Sorry, I was being lazy-didn't go back to the previous page! If only... Mancini and Sven...
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Sorry, I was being lazy-didn't go back to the previous page! If only... Mancini and Sven... He'd only have moved on once he tired of the local maidens.
T4E Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Sven wanted to make Mancini his first signing for Rovers and bring him from Italy with him. Jack Walker said no. It was the beginning of the end of Sven taking the job... What it is to be old and still have your memory. Very interesting........I always thought Mancini turned us down.
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Very interesting........I always thought Mancini turned us down. No, for some reason I remember this well. Sven put Mancini forward as his first prospective signing, but Jack said no. Eriksson was a bit put out - he never gets angry - and eventually used it as one of the reasons why he pulled out of joining. He didn't like 'interference.' I believe Jack's reason for being against Mancini was his age. He thought he was too old. Mancini was 32 at the time. Sven and Mancini are very close. He signed his boy for Man City.
bringdunnback Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=725814 If this is true we should rule Laudrap out now, I especially don't like this. "Among the clauses that were rejected by Panathinaikos, the most irksome proved to be his request to be allowed to leave at any time if a Spanish club made an approach for him." Whats his obsession with Spain anyway?

nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Finally heard the John Williams interview on Sky...WHERE did he deny the Shearer story? Sky are a journalistic disgrace. The man - obviously 'door-stepped' by someone with a camera - gave them a courteous and non-commital answer. But some sneider decides to have a go at the papers and 'deny' that they will speak to Shearer.
Ewood and I Would Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Sky are a journalistic disgrace. I'm suprised you hate Sky so much especially when I've heard them compliment you personally twice this week Well they praised you for having good connections at Rovers.
Rover9 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Hmm I noticed that myself, I saw the headlines on the skysports website this morning and from it you would believe that Rovers were denying any interest in Shearer and basically rubbishing this mornings stories. Then got home at dinner to see the fella on sky introducing the piece by saying JW is distancing himself from Shearer, only to actually watch the interview and see that he said something along the lines of you know me better than to start commenting on individuals especially when I am on my way to the meeting now to disscuss potential candidates! Skysports eh
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I'm suprised you hate Sky so much especially when I've heard them compliment you personally twice this week Well they praised you for having good connections at Rovers. I don't like the way they take stories and pump them out and then lift newspaper stories and try to knock them down. You just had to listen to the interview to hear John Williams had said nothing about Shearer either way. Heard something about a compliment - not that I usually get them. Mind you, I always did like that Paul McCarthy
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 BBC's take on it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ers/7444093.stm I am suprised that Lineker hasn't asked him on air as he has done it before when he was linked to Newcastle. From what i saw of the Williams interview it was clear to me he hasn't ruled out anyone who has shown an interest yet.
CAPT KAYOS Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Didn't he go to B and Q in the end? I think they wanted to launch a new line in wardrobes. Funny thing about this was his name appeared on the bookies sheets for first goalscorer on the Saturday game, so was it a case of another Roy Keane scenario.
den Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Finally heard the John Williams interview on Sky...WHERE did he deny the Shearer story? Where on here, did anyone say that Sky did say he was ruled out, or that Sky said that JW wouldn't be flying out? Think you got the wrong end of the stick Nicko.
sjsbrfc Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Where on here, did anyone say that Sky did say he was ruled out, or that Sky said that JW wouldn't be flying out? Think you got the wrong end of the stick Nicko. Sky themselves said it on their hourly headlines
nicko Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Where on here, did anyone say that Sky did say he was ruled out, or that Sky said that JW wouldn't be flying out? Think you got the wrong end of the stick Nicko. Sky did one of their silly yellow trailers on it...and then put it on their website. Still, if it puts people off the trail, so be it. Doesn't stop them being amateurs.
Ewood and I Would Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Heard something about a compliment - not that I usually get them. Mind you, I always did like that Paul McCarthy You actually got two, one for your story on Hughes on Chelsea the day after he signed for City and another one today for the Shearer story. The funny thing is I have friends who take what they say on Sky as Gospel and slate me for listening to "some guy on a forum" but now they know who you are and realize that you write half their stories for them. I reckon I could set up a rival, just hire a Studio, 10 or so Uni drop outs to scour newsnow and tribalfootball al day and get ex-Blue Peter presenters just report them as fact and "exclusives"

Dunnfc Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Bit of advice here lads: Watch Setanta sports news instead with Charlotte Jackson, she makes it worth watching it over and over again. ^ ^
Big Archie Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Nicko, going by the players getting linked with the likes of Spurs, Villa, City etc who do you think will be the best of rest next season? Also whats happening at Newcastle? Is Ashley going to splash the cash or are they really strapped for cash? No new contract for Owen, Barton either facing the sack or wage reduction, Emre, Carr and now Ameobi all out the door with question marks over the future of the likes of Smith, Duff, Milner and Rozenhal... Are they expected to make many movements in the transfer window?
Fife Rover Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Will you still be unable to understand it when a packed and excited Blackburn are singing "There's only one Alan Shearer" at the first game of the season with the feel good factor as high as its been since the mid 90's ? Oh the sheer joy and exuberance of it all!! Alan Shearer back at Rovers; wonderful stuff. The joyous mood of the crowd will lift the players and we will win our first 3 or 4 matches and could even actually find ourselves top of the EPL come end of August. Then reality sets in...............it's where we finish in May 2009 that is the only thing that matters. Think about it!!!
