Martinez? Surely not.

I believe Boothoryd and Martinez have been discussed and - if the interviews meander a bit - they may well be spoken to.

I still understand that many of the bigger names can also expect a call.

I am picking up worrying rumours that there are some people on the board who would rather go for the cheap and hungry option...so frankly I don't know what way this will work out now.

Puzzled.

Cheap! What a ludicrous thought process that would be. Paying top players £ 20-30,000 per week and then going for a 'cheap' manager? He only has to make one mistake with a signing and it would pay for an 'expensive' manager. Conversely uncovering a Hughes type signing pays a top manager's contract in full. I think our board will have more gumption.

What annoys me is that we have the likes off Ten Cate, Bilic Laudrup and other quality managers, why on earth would you even look at Martinez and Boothroyd? Aidy got watford relegated and played shocking football as Nicko said so that is a big NO. Martinez, good manager done well with Swansea but we are in the premiership, higher level, better quality and much more pressure, can he cope with that? I think not. So the board should quit looking at these bright and up coming manager and go with experience. To be frankly honest i'd be very worried if we did appoint one of these managers, as someone mentioned earlier, we might win our first few games but its the position at the end of May 2009 we have to look at and by appointing one of these "bright and upcoming" managers, i dont think we should expect much!

It concerns me they have been discussed.

If people such as those mentioned over the past days are genuinely interested then names such as Boothroyd and Martinez should have been discussed only with the secretary, with regards to typing their rejection letters.

shillito, they may have been.... nicko hasn't said to what level they've been discussed. I could jsut bee that the board sat around and said, "lets go through the list, next up aidy boothroid {laughter fills room], okay next...." technically, in the media world, that's the board discussing him! :)

Yes he has, he has said they have been/are being considered.

I like Martinez both as a person and the job he's done at Swansea. Whenever I've seen them they seem to play really good free-flowing football.

However that doesn't come one iota close enough to making him eligible to manage Rovers.

Let's see what the next few days bring. This has got a bit interesting.

I heard Boothroyd was on the fringes of the picture yesterday and laughed, then I heard it tonight AFTER the meeting. I heard Martinez TWICE today. Their names have not been anywhere else, so I think the sources have got some insight.

However I must stress that the big boys are still very much in play, but these two may get a surprise tap on the shoulder.

Although it seems unlikely, I'd be happiest with Bilic, young, exciting, seems to really know what he's talking about, and he has obviously done well with Croatia

Ten Cate would be another good one, you don't get the great reputation he has for nothing, and he wants it. If he was responsible for getting that Barcelona team to play the way they did and win then I'd take him.

Shearer would be a gamble, true, but if what is said about his standing in the football community is true, then maybe it is not that big of a gamble. He has his badges and if lots of big names in football think he can do it, I won't disagree. Plus it would be great fun.

Don't know much about Laudrup, but he seems to be rated, and if John Williams and co. interview him and are suitably impressed then...ok.

Any others I think I'd probably be disappointed.

Here's hoping for some good football to watch next season

IMO, what our club needs, is someone with drawing power, - someone who can attract the quality players to Ewood Park [particularly in our case where the name of the club isn't the attraction]. That was the case with Dalglish, Souness and Hughes - world class footballers who had the drawing power. They could get the players in, absolutely vital. Sign first division players, get first division football.

True - Shearer has more respect in the game than people give him credit for (people on this board that is!). As I said before, we dont really want to lose half our talented squad that has done so well over the past couple of seasons. We need to keep our better players and try and bring in more quality in this ultra competitive league. We need someone with passion and who knows the game.

Nicko - I would not say this has got interesting, but more like, back to depressing! Daily Mail saying Peter Reid has applied and also says that Hughes wants Samba - Link here....

The Board comprises John Williams (Executive Chairman), David Brown (Vice-Chairman and WT appointee), Robert Coar (former chairman and very senior in FA and EPL circles), Richard Matthewman (Jack's son-in-law), Tom Finn (Executive MD) and Martin Goodman (Executive FD).

David Brown, Tom Finn and Martin Goodman are new to the Board since the last Manager's selection at which time Robert Coar was still Chairman I believe.

JW was very explicit about what the process was going to be. First they were going to profile the job- what characteristics they want the candidate to have- then they were going to do the short listing.

I am speculating but Nicko might be picking up a Board preference for the successful candidate to be reletaively young and driven as having won out from the profiling exercise. If that were the case, it would knock away the chances of ten Cate and Advocaat sadly but the likes of Bothroyd (whom I really do not rate) and Martinez (who might be interesting) would stay on the table. I hope my guess is wrong.

The official board is dead at the moment so no chance of seeing if the occasional posters on there who seem to be well connected have had anything to say.

I do think it's interesting how this develops. It is more than just a managerial appointment but a statement of future intent.

As for the Mail's stories. Taking 'doing favours for your mates' to a new level...

I was just reading about Hughes looking at Samba on the Mail on Sunday website and it mentions this about the 40 shortlist:

Shearer and MK Dons boss Paul Ince figure on Blackburn's shortlist after Ewood Park directors met yesterday to consider 40-strong roster of candidates including Alan Irvine, Peter Reid and Zenit St Petersburg manager Dick Advocaat.

Interesting few on there!

I don't think Irvine & Reid have been mentioned until now.

Edit:

Oops! Didn't refresh quick enough.
