Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 We have got the likes of Henk Ten Cate enthusiastic and willing to become our next manager and we are going for the "cheap and easy" option.

gumboots Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 If that's right then I won't be attending too many matches at Ewood this season. Hugely disappointed if we have to choose one of the 4 named. No imagination and if allardyce comes I may even consider leaving the country (well actually I'm out of the country for the first game or two of the season but I may well forget to return). Gourcouff at Lorient, even though he doesn't wear a suit, is much more fun to watch. I just hope you've got it wrong, Nicko.

cn_barlow Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 cant help but get the feeling that this i sthe beginning of the end!
tony gale's mic Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Put simply, if JW appoints one of these instead of ten Cate (and if interested, Laurdrup), then it will be him who has to answerable if (or when) things go wrong.

It's not totally his choice. He's the chairman, a paid employee, not the owner. However, if any of them are appointed and he goes along with it then he should certainly look at resigning if it does go wrong.

Cocker Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Put simply, if JW appoints one of these instead of ten Cate (and if interested, Laurdrup), then it will be him who has to answerable if (or when) things go wrong. There is nothing in the world that would say that Ten Cate or Laudrup would succeed either though. To blame John Williams if a new manager fails to produce the goods is madness
LeChuck Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 If we're interviewing Martinez why aren't we enquiring about Gary Johnson? I'm not even sure why we're interviewing Martinez to be honest. Am I the only cynical one who thinks that if he was called Bobby Smith or whatever then he wouldn't be getting an interview?
tony gale's mic Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 If you cant afford single malt you have to acquire a taste for a blend. We've just got a 5 million up front pay off for Hughes, there is no reason why we can't afford anyone on this list.

To blame John Williams if a new manager fails to produce the goods is madness This is an argument all the Shearer supporters put forward and quite frankly it's nonsense. Apologies if I'm making wrong assumptions but I'm guessing you probably are. There's no guarantee anyone will succeed. In a dream world if we attracted Mourinho there's no guarantee he'd succeed either. But it's about picking the man who is most likely to succeed, and based on past track records and experience both of those men are.

Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 There is nothing in the world that would say that Ten Cate or Laudrup would succeed either though. The fact that they have both got managerial experience and the likes of Shearer hasn't? It could go bad if we appoint the wrong person, but with the right appointment we could probably improve on where we are now. I just feel that the names mentioned besides Henk Ten Cate and possibly Laudrup haven;t got the managerial experience needed to move us up to the next level.

Am I the only cynical one who thinks that if he was called Bobby Smith or whatever then he wouldn't be getting an interview? Have to disagree with you here, not that I support his candidacy but the fact we're ranking Shearer, Ince and Fat Sam ahead of Laudrup and ten Cate shows our line of thinking is completely the opposite if anything. They seem to be exclusively favouring managers based in England. Roberto Martinez may be Spanish but he's been in England since the mid 90s.
spencey7 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 If you cant afford single malt you have to acquire a taste for a blend. Total rubbish. We're a consistent Top 10 side in the richest league in the world, and have just recieved a substantial compensation payment by the club who took our manager. Also, chances are we'll be cashing in on our most over-priced player this summer. We really should be interviewing the "stand-bys" and not the four who are going to be spoken to. The fact we'll be looking for our new manager to bring in backroom staff is what really makes me fear Allardyce. Unable to dazzle the board with brilliance he'll baffle them with bull**** with all his "ProZone" crap. This is a sad indicator of the level our board is aiming. I'd accept Shearer, but any of the other three would be horrific.
thenodrog Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 If another potential buyer goes away - and the Trustees don't lob some funds in - you have to wonder what exactly is going on. Why lob funds in? Hughes left em with a squad at least 40m better value. If Hughes were still here we'd sell one and invest in the next ones coming on the other end of the Hughes conveyor belt. Superb business model along the lines that Jack Walker must have envisaged. I find it difficult to believe that Jack would have allowed the model to disintegrate so easily by Hughes to depart so easily.
Cocker Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 This is an argument all the Shearer supporters put forward and quite frankly it's nonsense. Apologies if I'm making wrong assumptions but I'm guessing you probably are. While I would support big Al if he took over and would probably still have his babies if he got us relegated I dont really think I would support him taking over. Having thought about it long and hard I am of the view that we are on a looser with it. I think its already been mentioned that if he took over and did bad - everyone would hate him. If he took over and did good then he would inevitably be off to the barcodes again at the first chance. I am a Williams supporter and if he is looking for a man for the long haul then I am with him 100%

They seem to be exclusively favouring managers based in England. Roberto Martinez may be Spanish but he's been in England since the mid 90s. Good point, although Ince and Shearer are being interview because of who they were as players, and Allardyce because of what he achieved at Bolton. Martinez is the odd-one-out in that respect, and I just think being called Roberto Martinez makes him sound more appealing than if he had a plain old English name. Someone wins League One every year and they don't usually get linked to top Premiership jobs, so I'm trying to work out what makes Martinez different.
thenodrog Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Rather disappointing that the current Mboard favourite.. Slaven Bilic ... is not even in the 6. Of the 4 Nicko has named as favourites Sam Allardyce is the obvious choice to provide the safe and strong leadership that we need. But who can say what is obvious or not when imo the best choices Ten Cate and Laudrup are sat on the subs bench? I guess those two are there cos they would insist on a certain level of funding.
Hughesy Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Seems to me that the club are going down the line of recruitment they went down last time. Someone with hunger to succeed, british based and a point to prove. Whilst Henk Ten Cate would be good - i would imagine he would want a much higher wage. Have faith in JW, he has done us no harm in his time at the club, and he wont again - whoever he chooses.
tony gale's mic Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 And I really hate to say this, but out of those four the common sense choice would be Allardyce. I dislike him just as much as anyone here and the idea of him managing our club is not a nice one. But above all else I want whats best for our club and I want to see our club compete amongst the very best for as long as possible. Allardyce out of those four is the only man who has done it before with a club like ours in the Premier League. He is the most likely man to keep our club in the position we are in now, and thats quite hard to argue against surely.

1864roverite Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Talk about over reactions lets just wait and see until we hear the "Official" Rovers statements, not react to overhyped media speculation. It wont do you any good. Noone knows if there is a 6 man list and NOONE knows who is on it. I dont think for one minute the board are looking at a cheap option, there is no need. JW HIMSELF said it will be someone who can progress the club as it is firmly established. In respect of the names mentioned, I honestly believe that Berg will be spoken to as will McClaren. Fat Sam will also be spoken to as will I imagine the likes of Ince, Shearer. I do NOT believe that if a person such as HTC applies that he would be ignored simply due to his personal experience(s). Likewise Dick Advocaat, if HE has voiced his interest he will be spoken to. Fear not you Rovers fans, I simply refuse to accept that Rovers Board have made a decision without first seeing what the potential candidates have to offer. If I remember rightly, a person applies for the job, there is a paper sift of the candidates, interviews are offered and conducted, board reconvenes to discuss the interviewees and make a decision then the job is offered. Now forgive me Ladies and Gents but its only Tuesday and I for one dont think for a minute everything is done and dusted at board level. When Iwas down at Ewood earlier the postman didnt arrive until 1145am
tony gale's mic Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Whilst Henk Ten Cate would be good - i would imagine he would want a much higher wage. We would be able to afford HTC's wage, what's a higher manager wage when we don't hesitate to give our players big pay rises, especially with the compensation we've recieved?
