Brownie Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I cannot believe how fickle some people are. I think I'd prefer anyone on the list of candidates over Sam Allardyce, but I wouldn't end my association with the football club if he were appointed! In any case, I'd give him a chance. Please change White Heart Lane to White Hart Lane on your signature. It infuriates me ! ;-)

USABlue Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I think the four who will be interviewed are...Shearer, Allardyce, Ince and Martinez. NOT McClaren I understand. I think the standby two are Ten Cate and possibly Laudrup, who may be out of range for talks just now. Been round every Manchester airport hotel and had no sightings, but found out that: Shearer will speak at some stage soon. Allardyce is abroad but deffo coming back. Ince has to give Leicester an answer or lose it Martinez - under contract - may well have a secret meeting. I DO think there are different views on the board, but that is probably healthy and part of an interview process. I am in Ince's corner but the rest?? of the 4 Martinez or Ince. Looks a bit scary to me and certainly as predicted with the cheap option. I am afraid for this club right now.
Fife Rover Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I'd forgotten abot the out of work Oirishman, he couldn't have appled - could he? Anyway, I'd still be there if Jim Iley returned. So would I, but there was actually one worse than Iley, and that was his successor John Pickering! Thank the Lord his reign was a very short one, as he would surely have led Rovers to complete extinction if given a bit more time. Still didn't make me give up my season ticket though.
RevidgeBlue Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 One thing that worries me is if we think we know who we want, then that person suddenly runs a mile when he is told the budget he has to work with. Could we end up having to go grovelling back cap in hand back to another candidate or failing that be forced to turn to someone completely different, not originally on the final shortlist. Any thoughts on that nicko?

Any thoughts on that nicko? Remember we should have at least £3 million of that £5 million we got for Hughes, plus that £10 million we've mentioned before, plus maybe, just maybe we can squeeze a couple more million out of the Trustees given its a new manager and everything. Even if we don't, £13 million at least allows the manager to make a couple of fairly big signings...and more if we sell Bentley.

Thank the Lord his reign was a very short one, as he would surely have led Rovers to complete extinction if given a bit more time. Still didn't make me give up my season ticket though. That wasn't my recollection of John Pickering Fife, my recollection was that Iley left us in an absolutely dire state and Pickering came in and did a pretty good job in very difficult circumstances and was extremely popular with the fans. But couldn't quite keep us up.
Jan Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I'm right there with Gumboots on the odiousness of BFS, I wouldn't demand my season ticket money back, but the uncertainty is making me hold on to the money I'd otherwise spend on my car park pass (almost as much as my season ticket). I'd also find the motivation to drive 217 miles each way to watch hoof-ball sadly lacking on all but the nicest of days (about 3 a year). Would that change if we were winning? Probably, however we wouldn't be. Just as other managers have been proven to have a sell-by date and never get another job, (Sourpuss, Peter Reid, George Graham), I think BFS may have reached his. At least I pray that's the case. Slimy, horrible, YUK.
philipl Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 John Pickering signed Duncan McKenzie. Differennt era but shows that the little guy could sign superstars. And yes Pickering was enormously popular with the fans but Iley's 40 days absolutely rocked/wrecked the club from top to bottom meaning that Pickering was difficult to assess in isolation from his Iley inheritance. A salient lesson for today. PS not to go down thenodrog route but all us chaps need a strong antidote to whatever BFS "does" for the ladies.
Brownie Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Well what club WOULD be ideal for Shearer to begin his managerial career ?? By Matthew Dunn of The Express BLACKBURN chairman John Williams was last night thankful that he had over 40 other candidates to consider, after top target Alan Shearer hinted he was having second thoughts about leaving the pundits’ couch for the managerial hotseat at Ewood Park. The Rovers board had given him a mandate to look into bringing their former striker back to succeed Mark Hughes, after Shearer appeared to let it be known he could be interested in a return to football. But it became clear that the issue was already dead as the former England captain was not sure whether Blackburn was the right place to begin his managerial career.
USABlue Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I'm pretty sure it was four candidates...plus a standby. Hughes, Dowie, Strachan and AN Other [i can't remember exactly] with bizarrely Craig Levein as the standby. I think Craig Levein was touted as the next great thing from Scotland at the time, then he went to Leicester and ballsed it up. Mmmm Rovers, candidate, Leicester. Familiar ring.
USABlue Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Ask most Newcastle fans, he attracted people to their club because of who he was. Gis a few names then, that you know Shearer attracted.

I think Kevin Gallacher is right in saying that if Shearer doesn't get the Rovers gig now the window of opportunity may shut for him. The "big four" are unlikely ever to go for him from scratch, Newcastle have turned him down once, if he turns us down he may not find any other top jobs coming his way.
philipl Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Fat Freddie didn't disparagingly call AS Mary Poppins for nothing. I've never had a Geordie girlfriend so I cannot comment on the veracity of that part of FF's Marbella knocking shop treatise but I always thought his comments on the intelligence of Newcastle fans were pretty perceptive
dj54nna Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I believe some people in power may actually watch this forum and realise there may be some sense around. In that case. TEN CATE FOR MANAGER. Got it?
USABlue Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Ok - watched with some amusement around the BFS/Shearer/Ince/Martinez debate - but must admit can't make my own mind up - so a split in the board room is understandable. True statement, but I think where the problem lies is many of us expected a list of more prominent names.
USABlue Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I'd rather have BFS than Martinez and Ince! Atleast that way we are guarenteed Premier League football every season. How so, Newcastle did not look like they were going to be GAURANTEED Prem football and Allardyce had spent a packet. People keep coming up with this Bolton and how they did well on resources blah blah blah, but he was there a few years before the went on the up, they flirted with relegation for two seasons. Why would coming to a new club like ours be any different than him going to Newcastle. People seem to think that Allardyce as boss will provide this magic stay in the prem card or something, sorry I don't see it that way. His style does not fit our current squad either IMHO
B.R.F.C Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 In that case. TEN CATE FOR MANAGER. Got it? Nah Don't think they heard us... TEN CATE FOR MANAGER. Maybe now
LeChuck Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I meant 'new' in terms of people you haven't seen much of before and who are impressing. I know where you're coming from in that respect Nicko, there hasn't been a breakthrough (probably better terminology?) talent coming to the fore so far. The guy who scored the Czech goal is probably the only one, he looked lively and took his goal well, also he must have something about him to be ahead of Baros in the pecking order. He is still playing in his native league I believe.
Bobby G Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I dont know how significant this is Nicko but... Like I said Allardyce is a pundit on Jazeera Sports coverage of Euro 2008 and last night Richard Keys said tomorrow night is Sam's last night with us. And from the day after someone else will replace him...
LA Rover Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 My mate in Barcelona says the papers this morning were reporting that wherever Ten Cate ends up, he is taking Oleguer (Barca right back with him). He was a mainstay in the CL winning team a few years back, but has fallen out of favor the last couple seasons. Ten Cate really likes him and supposedly wants to take him with him. He's not a great defender but he's pretty decent going forward. He played a bit in the center as well. As we need a right back, seems a logical fit. One for Nicko to check on, perhaps.

People seem to think that Allardyce as boss will provide this magic stay in the prem card or something, sorry I don't see it that way. His style does not fit our current squad either IMHO he had just brought them up from the championship. no wonder they struggled at first. no matter what you say, his four last years were better than the last four have been for us. Sam is a great manager. prolly better than sparky, and you people should not damn him just because of some (dare i say) utterly childish "hate" for Bolton. Come on. its football, not war. i would like to know just why some of you "hate" bolton so much you cant stand the thought of having their ex-manager. sure its not just something you have "learned" over the years? Sam is surely in a totally different league than e.g. shearer. Sam have shown he can handle such a job. shearer is a blind bet.
John Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Not to depress people further, theme of the papers today is around Allardyce, saying he is well back in the race and thinks he can get the job. Three horse race - Sam, Berg and Stevie Mac. May just open the champagne up now
philipl Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 John, if you think that the shortlist is Berg, Allardyce and McClaren this time next week, there might be cause for a spot of the glums. The Independent doing some Abramovich watching.
Iceman Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Rumours going around is that there is a 2 way race between allardyce and mcclown.i hope its a race down one of ur highways over there, and far away from ewood.
Bobby G Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I hope Shearer isnt out of the race. Id take Allardyce over McClaren any day though. No wonder Big Sam has just quit his punditry with Jazeera Sports. He has got a new job to secure!
