exactly.

the "route one" style cant be outdated already if he used it at bolton a year ago. thats bull.

also he had a certain bunch of players at bolton. they are absolutely not david bentleys or tugays or santas. with the bolton kind of players you can not try to be arsenal and play "sexy". you must do what the players know how, and make them feel great. the newcastle job counts for nothing. nothing at all.

norway did great under egil olsen (the wimbledon guy.) and he was all about long crosses and few touches. speaking of wimbledon. they did well under joe kinnear, with the same stye. not lovely but effective. if thats what it takes to win, then so be it. at blackburn he got confident players, a supportive board and generally a great squad. which he did not have at newcastle. he can go for any system he wants, and see what works out. if it is "route one" then let him play that.

whats more fun? play like barcelona, and possibly lose, or play like bolton did and possibly win? its as simple as that. do we want to win or do we want to gamble?

You beat me to it - the calibre of players he had at Bolton would be a hell of a lot different than he has now.

Just the general attitude of certain posters. I have never known so many moaners in my life, I know a lot of Burnley fans and they complain less!!

But surely you can see why, this is about the future of the club. You will have some people who rate one manager and some who rate another. Some who feel this manager will bring success and some who reckon this manager will bring us failure. You can just view the fan based polls and comments to see that opinions are completley mixed on who we should appoint next.

Exactly - He is not a proper coach. Didn't you watch ANY Newcastle games during his spell as manager?? All he knows how to do is attempt to make teams play like Bolton.

I hate Sam Allardyce's:

- tactics

- footballing ethos

- transfer record

- aloof managerial style (sitting in the stands like a moron)

- "ProZone" rubbish (it still couldn't tell him Alan Smith didn't complete a pass in six months)

- delusions of grandeur

and above all:

- his smug nature

Shall I continue?

Total nonsense! I honestly can't believe what I'm reading here. He builds a squad at Newcastle (£26m!), sends them divebombing into the relegation zone, is involved in alleged corrupt dealings in the transfer market but THIS is the man some fans (even ONE fan) is turning to???

Thank god you're not on the board.

NO BOSS NASS AT EWOOD

dont go or watch it then if your so bothered

mjs- we beat West Ham last game of that season, Brooking and all. They came to Ewood needing a draw to win promotion against already relegated Rovers and we destroyed them.

We played Fulham after that game, in midweek, and won 2-1. I am sure about that because I have just checked my 'Mike Jackman'. ;)

Fantastic crowd for the Fulham game - a huge 4,684. I remember it pretty well as I was still at school at the time and had to bus it to the match from Adlington because my brother (who usually drove me) had to go to college that night. The only thing is the git 'wagged it' and went to the match but didn't tell me.

Ee them were t'days!!

Presty, thats exactly what im trying to get at.the main reason nobody wants allardyce,is no matter what players he has it his disposable, his tacticts remain unchanged.that makes me think that bfs is not a proper coach.

then JW and his friends will decide he cant run our club. if he has that philosophy then thats ok. he have a super record with bolton with that system. at least we have a feeling of what we can expect. with shearer all we know is that there is two outcomes: A) he does great, and we build on what sparky did. then he's off to the barcodes. B) he take us down the table.

I agree but either appointment and what you mention - the future of the club - would be safe in my eyes. So much so I have had another £100 bet we finish above West Ham next season under Curbishley (a name banded around here for a few years - he's done precisely what in the 2nd half of ANY premiership season?)

I know sumwhere ive contradicted myself, but im not pro or anti allardyce.the guy just doesnt know any other way.the one advantage with having shearer,is that he wil get the strikers in good shape.if its berg, our defence wil be wel looked after.thus if it was me,id have shearer with berg as his assistant.i guess that wont happen,as neither would want to be anybodys number 2.

And why does it have to be either allardyce or shearer? Just because they are the 2 mentioned doesn't have to mean that they are the only 2 being considered. Or I hope it doesn't. I have huge reservations about an untried guy like shearer taking over too, but they would not keep me from Ewood. allardyce would.

Agree or disagree with the following, when all said and done its a message board where people can vent their feelings and opinions.

The club have a big descision to make in the next couple of weeks and a rushed appointment could be to the detrement to the future of Rovers.

I do wonder whether Hughes departure was a blessing. Despite flirting with cup semi finals and finishing in the top half of the premiership, apart from a hand full of games, displays by Rovers had been negaite and in many cases dire. Some of Hughes tactics were so negative, that there was more entertainmant watching paint dry. However the board were as much to blame as Hughes. With no financial support, to coin a Souness phrase Hughes had to wee with the willie he had.

Who ever comes in as manager has to have that financial backing, before the willies that we have wear out.

However the new manager must come in with new ideas that will bring some excitment back on to the terraces. The thought of watching a hoof it up field manager just does not get my spuds boiling.

After the dire performances and couldnt care less attitude of many of the players last season. I made the concious descision in April to become a walk on supporter this coming season.

I now wait in antisipation on whether the new manager appointed can give me a sufficient buzz to entice me to renew. And I'll be honest I cant see BFS giving me sufficient encouragement to drive up and down the M6.

im 100% certain you will come back if he does well. if you want rovers to win, and they do, what have you to complain about? chelsea hardly play attarctive football but they win, and the stands are loaded. success=crowds.

now i do agree that with shearer or even berg we will have a sold out first game for sure, but as i said shearer is a one night stand. he will leave as soon as he has "learned" how to manage a football club. berg might actually stay but i dont rate him as good enough.

HTC would be my first choice. The guy has proven credentials and he clearly wants the job.

Absolutely. Of all the managers mentioned, he has the most experience in my opinion. As for people wanting "sexy football"...

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/10/..._put_a_bit.html

That was when he was joining Chelsea. If they hired him because of a lack of attacking football, we can be pretty sure we won't be a "route one" team next season.

Gumboots of coz its not just bfs and shearer.im stil praying its ten cate, bilic or laudrup.i like u aint keen on allardyce, but if he is appointed then its either the fans accept him and support the team,or reject him and dont support the team.either way,if he is in charge u dnt have to like him,but ur support of the team is what wil make the difference at the end of the day.the players need the fans more than what they need a coach.

Alan i can see your point about some of the dire stuff we played from say Christmas to the end of the season.

I noticed a shift in our tactics from say Christmas onwards. It became clear to me Hughes didn't have much confidence in either the defense (the likes of Samba and Nelsen had bad runs of form) and more importantly the midfield and so he reverted to a 5 man midfield, lone striker formation which as a result made us play a lot of long ball, unattractive stuff.

Hughes had made it clear the midfield was the area he wanted to strengthen and that he missed out on targets he wanted to get in january or that they weren't available until the summer.

Please go ahead and call me small-minded and petty, but there's no way I'll be going to Ewood if we appoint Sam Allardyce, not a chance.

Fine. Cutting ones nose off springs to mind. I wish I could believe that but it's rubbish and we all know it. You and others who share your overblown indignation will be viewing from the nearest pub showing Al Jazerra or whatever and then rushing on here to comment on the match.

Can I just add that the Bolton connection has nothing to do with my antipathy towards Allardyce. It's him. Nothing else. there's a lot of guys around who aren't sexy managers in any way either in the style of their football or in their personal appearance but they don't make me feel about them the way I feel about allardyce. It's no good trying to explain if it's not how he makes you feel. My daughter feels like that about pomegranates. she can't look at them without feeling ill. stupid and she knows it but it's just the way it is. That's me and allardyce.

Nails on a chalkboard again gumboots.

btw... I thought you'd be back to normal by now.

The final decision as to who gets the job will have been thought through and will be in the very best interests of BRFC.

I am sure that the appointment will be a positive one and that we will see a different brand of football on the park.

I agree that with Hughes, we saw some indifferent displays and tactical negative football in some games when maybe a different approach would have seen us get the points, and it was after all a total of 2 points that saw us fail in our ambition to get eufa football.

The man who gets the job will have had to impress the board who are offering it.

Completely agree. Right now people that dont want BFS are saying that they wont go watch rovers and then they claim themselevs to be "die hard" fans. If BFS was appointed who cares? Its a results driven business, if he gets the 3 points and takes us into europe then i'll be happy and im pretty damn sure 100% rovers fans will be aswell.

If he does get the job, which I hope he doesnt, then we go on we trust the appointment of JW and we havent been let down from him before and I have every confidence in him to get the next appointment spot on. If we are in danger of relegation then im sure the board will react first to give him the sack. Give him a chance and if he delivers then you aint gonna be complaining are you?

my point is that you cant judge on 6 or so months at newcastle. the fans are desperate, the board is desperate and the players dont go well together, do they? on paper they should be a ok team, but they arent. thats not sam to blame. i dont know if they were fit or not when he took over but they certainly had no self-esteem. newcastles problems go way way deeper than what sam could control. would you say sparky sucks if he dont get city up the table and is sacked by new years?

sam was at bolton for 8 years, brought them up from the championship and placed them firmly in the top 8. and got them into europe. not to mention he lead them to the league cup final. thats massive! and to me it is way more impressive than what hughes did for us.

thats the stats. they tell something but is not a guarantee. he may well fail at rovers, but to me he is by far the best option. he also stayed at bolton for 8 years. thats extremely important. could we hang on to a manager that long we are certainly gonna be successful. stability is everything. we held on to souness and sparky for four years, but thats not long enough. sparky just got his team together and only had details to fix before we could challenge the top 5 or even better. it is vital our next manager stays at least that long, and i dont see anyone willing to commit other than sam. shearer is a one night stand nothing more.

But Allardyce bought 9 of those players so if they don't go together then who's to blame for that?

He also sold Kieron Dyer and Nobby Solano who were 2 of Newcastle's more creative players and replaced one with Alan Smith and didn't even bother replacing Solano at all, who's fault was that?

What about when he went to Pride Park and left Obafemi Martins on the bench in favour of an awful Shola Ameobi because he wanted a taller striker to fire long balls out of defence at, not to mention he went there with a view of playing for a draw and gave Derby their only win of the season, who's fault was that?

What about when he got the sack and Damien Duff came out and said the players were far from being at peak fitness under him, who's fault was that?

If you're happy putting up with some of the most boring football going then you will be happy with Allardyce, you might even get 8 years of it, from a Newcastle point of view I wouldn't complain if he got the Rover's job as we might have a chance of getting rid of the rubbish like Alan Smith that he brought here.

Good post Alan75.

I agree, although not with the part about the board not backing him being a major reason. Granted he may not have been given fortunes to spend last January, but he had a good enough squad the play a hell of a lot better football than we played :(

You're not making yourself look very bright with that.

How can you hate his transfer record? He brought excellent players to Bolton for their size (Diouf, Anelka, Okocha etc.) and found plenty of hidden gems for peanuts (Jaaskelainen, Ben Haim, Stelios). Fair enough his Newcastle signings weren't great, but then doesn't every player arriving at Newcastle end up playing terribly?

Also, the 'ProZone rubbish' as you put it, well Hughes is also a massive fan of that an uses it extensively. In fact, most top managers do.

The rest (basically style of football and personality) are pretty insignificant compared to getting results on a budget. Don't get me wrong, he's not my first choice or even my second, but if he does end up being appointed I'll understand why and I'll back him completely until I have reason not to do so.

If he can consistently keep us in the top 8, as he did with Bolton, without spending much money will you still be complaining?
