Purse strings tied even more this year ??

I simply cannot agree with that comment.

We finish higher in the league = more prize pot money

We were on tv 14 times = more tv appearance money

We receive more annual tv money for 2008/09

We see an improvement in crowds, matchday revenue and turnover

We didnt see a massive spend in the transfer market and have now released several players from the club

We have just received a reported £5m PLUS for backrrom staff and manager

I think that firmly suggests there is a little more moeny in the Ewood coffers than one would imagine.

Ah, but look how much the gas and electric bills have gone up! ;)

In a way, I'm not suprised Shearer's spat his dummy out over the indignity of being short listed for what is, in actuality, one of the best management opportunities in football. You started to get the impression he didn't like not having things all his own way a few seasons into his career at Newcastle. The decision is foolhardy on his part of course but glad we've dodged a bullet. I look forward to the ensuing train wreck when somebody at Newcastle is stupid enough to give him the opportunity. It's there or Mark Lawrenson's lap for the rest of his life because if he's not prepared to swap that for a shot at our job, he' s hardly likely to want to work his way up through the divisions.

I do see the points some made about bringing the buzz back into the club with his appointment but as romantic as the notion is, it would always have been more akin to a summer fling. Anything more than mediocre would have resulted in him being off to Newcastle at the drop of a hat and anything less would have been failure. Bullet dodged, I think.

I'm quite open to the idea of Ten Cate, Ince, Laudrup etc. Positively distraught at the notion of McClaren or BFS for reasons plenty have articulated already. I'm absolutely petrified to lay either of them on Betfair in case the opposite happens.

What would excite me personally would be Billic. Is there absolutely any mileage at all in that Nicko or does he have bigger thoughts on his horizon? I would imagine he's quite keen to take Croatia to a World cup in 2010 for starters but I'd love to see if he could bring fresh drive, ambition and ideas to the Rovers.

Speaking of disrespectful comments towards us, another manager who has been talked about as a candidate for the vacancy slagged us off not that long ago.

“I was surprised that Barry came back to Rangers from Blackburn,” Advocaat said yesterday. “Mind you, I was surprised he played for Blackburn in the first place. He has much more talent than that, and can and could still play for the top four clubs in England."

Well that rules him out straight away.

Ferguson........play for a top 4 club....nooo

He was bobbins.

(better than The Axe though)

And your choice is?

Bilic, then Ince.

I'm not saying Ten Cate wouldn't be a good manager, but that post was so desperately trying to be pro-Ten Cate and anti-Allardyce that it was twisting everything. If we're going purely off managerial records then Allardyce is our man, trying to use facts and achievements to push Ten Cate forward is stupid.

He wasn't being linked with jobs in this country until he was a number two at big clubs, and history should have taught us to completely ignore achievements as an assistant when choosing managers. I just don't understand the excitement for a man who has managed a big club for one season and had mixed results at a number of small clubs elsewhere.

Take away his stints as an assistant (after all, they're meaningless) and what is really separating him from a bucket load of other moderately successful European coaches?

Ten Cate - two Champions League finals in the past 24 months at Barcelona and Chelsea.

Big Sam - two top-half finishes in the Prem at Bolton.

It's not even a contest.

As an assistant!!! In other words, completely and utterly irrelevant.

What do you mean by that?

Would Mancini consider the job now the Chelsea job has gone or am I just in dreamland?

Shearer cut HIS tie with Rovers years ago - He know longer likes Rovers supporters, he said as much a few years ago when playing for newcastle against Rovers when he was booed throughout the game.

He said words to the effect that he gave his heart to the club when he played for Rovers and was disgusted with the way he was treated on his return to ewood in a newcastle shirt etc. I believe he said at the time "thats it as far as I am concerned with Blackburn"

Anyway he is happy to stay with the B lackburn B ashers C lub

He has been there and done it, he has managed clubs of a similar size and budget as your own.

He has worked with top players and knows how to organise them, he knows how to mould teams with lesser players.

Big Sam plays ONE way and ONE way only. I quite like the fella, but you have enough trouble filling your stadium.

To appoint him is to admit you are going to be also-rans and just happy to get by.

To appoint Ten Cate would be imaginative and exciting.

What do you want?

So Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren make excellent managers?

Brian Kidd never was a manager.

Steve McClaren was manager of Middlesbrough and England.

It's not a comparison with Ten Cate.

Ten Cate was the power at Barca and Chelsea - Kidd and McClaren were happy to bask in Fergie's glories.

No comparison at all.

That's your opinion.

Personally I don't think appointing someone who's spent every season but-one managing Dutch also-rans qualifies as 'imaginative and exciting'. History shows that appointing people based on what a club achieved during their stint as assistant is a terrible move. Take away Barcelona and Chelsea from his CV and what is really there? Precious little in my opinion.

Now that Shearer is out of the running can we assume its now a four man shortlist of Ten Cate, Ince, Martinez and Allardyce with latter being interviewed. What is the situation as it stands?

I wonder if Boothroyd just crept back into the list...they may have time before they meet some of the others in the next few days. -_-

Answer the question.

I don't know if he would or not, but you can't tell from his time as assistant at Man Utd because it's quite obvious which of the managerial staff is responsible for their success.

He was hardly a roaring success at Real, was he?

I'm afraid you are wasting your time Nicko. There are some on here who have forgotten how Hughes lifted our expectations and want to take us back to the final years of Souness - happy to finish 17th or upwards. The number of comments on this thread along the lines of "BFS is the best because he can guarantee survival" is, apart from being wrong imo, very dispiriting. And frankly with that mindset we may get what we deserve - BFS
