[Archived] Nicko's Thread Part 3

Recommended Posts

Interesting fact I have just been told by my brother who was on a course in Bolton yesterday.

And I do mean FACT.

He stopped at The Last Drop in Bromley Cross last night and also staying overnight were Kenny Dalglish and Phil Thompson.

No idea of any significance but could be something Nicko to inquire about ?

Would make a great headline Nicko !

Not bothered nicko, but minus twenty quid - is it just me?

I thought I was following your advice on the Chelsea market and backed initially Hughes and then Ancelotti when I'm sure you stated it was a two horse race.

Two-horse race was Hughes and Scolari, Ancelotti was never in the frame.

The advice he gave was to back both Hughes and Scolari since their value was so good, you couldn't lose.

Ten Cate never did it! It wasn't his team, he was assistant.

I think myself an LeChuck differ somewhat on the value of playing understudy to top level managers, but he is absolutely right here - achievements made as assistant were just that, he did not achieve them as a manager. It is oh so easy to claim that the assistant was the real genius behind the manager's success, but we will never know. Certainly, that view doesn't wash with me.

For the record, HTC is far and away my no. 1 choice for manager.

I don't want Allardyce anywhere near this club because I dislike him on a personal level, feel his public image would harm the profile of our club and because I absolutely despise his style of football. We have heard testimony from Newcastle fans on here as to just how terrible their football was under Fat Sam.

After HTC, I'd probably go for Ince because I feel he has the hunger and determination to succeed as well as the profile to attract good players to the club. Then I'd have Martinez. (I won't include the likes of Billic and Laudrup because they haven't once been linked with the vacant position.

According to reports this morning the reasons that Shearer turned Rovers down were 2 fold. Apparently more talks took place yesterday, as Nicko suggested Shearer started to dictate terms of taking the job, the 2 major sticking points were that he wanted to continue his BBC commitment (which was meant with some resistance from the Rovers board) and the size of the transfer budget, Shearer felt with the Financial resources he couldn't take Rovers beyond what Hughes had achieved.

In my eyes he has done nothing wrong. He has looked at the offer and decided that it wasn't for him.

I agree. I feel he is a little naive if he think he will get this kind of opportunity again, but it's his decision and he decided it wasn't the job for him. I don't think this makes him a bottler and I don't think he treated us particularly badly. Williams was very complimentary of his professional manner.

Oh, and I'm gutted. The buzz Shearer's appointment would create would be immense and I think he'd make a good manager. He has the profile and experience at the highest level.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Big Sam IS right in the frame here...Newell has no chance.

The 'wires' seem to be agreeing with one or two comments and snippets passed on here.

This Ten Cate sounds an interesting chap... ;)

I AM afraid VERY afraid now nicko. Bloody hell I have a gut feeling they will appoint this plonker, they wanted Shearer why not this idiot.

Scolari...think I said that from the off when Kenyon and Arnesen wanted Hughes but Roman wanted Scolari.

I thought I was asked a few times and specified those were the two horses.

Rijkaard was the non-runner. Mancini left in the stables. Ancelotti the show pony.

Like I've said before, I fully trust JW's judgement to the extent that if he says Allardyce is the right man for us then I Allardyce will get the same support from me as Hughes did but he is definitely not my first choice. I'm not excited about any of the candidates really, only opinions of who I would rather not have.

Do you know more about Ten Cate than the snippet mentioned in that article?

Big sam please don't sign that dotted line please don't.

If sam was appointed, i think the new club shop should sell neck braces with a rovers logo on them, because after watching some of the football that Big Sam will introduce at ewood i am sure every supporter will need need one.

Might be an idea to take a breath here.

ALLARDYCE - has pastered his way into the frame, will have a meeting and put his case, but has obvious question marks about him, like size of staff, style of football, etc.

TEN CATE - I like him a lot, but the board have to talk to him to make up their own minds, I believe they will - and then it's up to him to show he is a number one and not a number two.

INCE - never been sure about his chances, let's be fair if they want to speak they would do so 'off the record' and few would know, for what it's worth Leicester think they are getting him.

MCCLAREN - a great deal of reluctance with him and comes with all of the England flop baggage - not to mention a brolly.

MARTINEZ - interesting, a gamble, but worth a chat to see what he is about, no harm done in taking your time on that one.

IRVINE - known to the club and a nice guy, is he ready for the Premier? who knows.

BOOTHROYD - wants it, may get a meeting, but has a lot to do.

PEARCE - believe he has some support...why?

COPPELL - also has been mentioned, like him despite reservations elsewhere, would take him seriously.

LAUDRUP, BILIC - not in it just now, but if this drags and things get heated that may change.

So where is the harm in taking a fresh look at it? Shearer was going to get it, but he pulled out. It happens.

Just to clarify, my dislike for BFS is not based on the "boring" tactics he employed throughout much of his time at Bolton. We did indeed use the same similar tactics for a period and we got over it because it delivered the product. Added to that, Allardyce was pretty successful at Bolton. It's that whenever the word controversy is used in football, his name tends to appear in the same sentence. It's his peronality I dislike and I don't think he is a good representative for our club. I don't think there are many who believe him to be totally innocent in the transfer bung saga and I've heard it widely suggested that in some cases he made players ditch their agent and appoint his own son to represent them before he signed them.

I agree. I said 100 pages ago when Hughes went that it would be Allardyce (whether we like it or not). If this is JW final choice, so be it. Follow Rovers not the man!

That's one mother of a grim looking list.

Arguably the two most intriguing possibilities aren't in the running and the only one I really fancy of the rest is Ince.

If pushed for an alternative I'd go for Alan Irvine at a pinch.

How long before Peter Reid, Bryan Robson and Souness enter the fray?

Think ten cate has to be one of the main contenders here, at least he has the experience plus he will have contacts within the game.

Think Fat sam would be ok if we were stuck in a relegation battle but as a club we have more aspiration than that, think he should be towards the bottom of the list if Ten Cate, Laudrup. Not too sure about martinez and ince to be honest as they havent had much experience but Keano, Hughesy and Bruce have done well as managers so incey could be a good shout out!!
