Well Giggs is past it being one of them

I think you could get a good season out of Giggs, terrific football brain, play him left wing or even in one. Or in a role through the middle.

The same guy scored the decisive goal at Wigan by using his head and finding space...that was two weeks ago. Life in that old dog yet.

Ferguson has released an entire team worth of players who have continued to have success at the (in some cases very) top level.

Kanchelskis, Ince, Hughes, Cole, Berg, Pallister, Van Nistelrooy, Stam, Poborsky, Howard etc etc etc.

All of that lot (with the possible execption of Stam - released after a contretemps with Ferguson) were way past their peak and on the downward slope when they left United.

Ferguson is alot of unmentionable things but he knows football and he knows when a player's time is up.

I have said it before about Scholes and Giggs that if he became available that I reckon that Keegan would be sniffing round and blow any offer we could make out of the water.

Couldn't see Scholes or Giggs going up to Newcastle at this stage in their careers though.

I'd take Scholes and Giggs if they became available and would be willing to come to Rovers.

The experience they could offer alone would be a huge boost and i still think they have a lot to offer as players.

The wages may be a problem, but we have Sparky a United legend who played with both players and also managed Giggs at Wales in our favor.

Didn't Hughes say near the beginning of the season if Giggs and Scholes were available he would make a serious move for them?

RvN has done well at Real, as did Beckham. Howard wasn't past his best, but he was probably never quite good enough for United.

Keegan has been told that the club won't be funding any signings for the short term.

"Over the summer we will look to strengthen the squad further. In addition to making any immediate fixes that may be required, as with everything else we have done since Mike acquired the club, we will want to acquire players that can help make Newcastle United a top team for the medium and long-term, not just for the next season or two. That is why we put a substantial offer in for Luka Modric, who is aged 22."

Right so that would be Van Nistelrooy who has scored 41 goals in 61 games for Real. Wouldn't have him at rovers, definitely past it!

Fergie gets the majority right, but that doesn't mean they don't things to offer to clubs like ourselves.

That's the key modes. With the possible exception of RvN, who they are still really trying to replace (although the relationship obviously wasn't the best), Ferguson always let's people go when it is right for United, but seeing as their standards are so far above those of most other clubs and as they constantly bring in new talented players, simply because a player is no longer needed at OT doesn't not mean that he is no longer a good player.

Personally I wouldn't go for Giggs, but Scholes, if the price and wages were right, I would go for. I wouldn't be desperate to sign him and I think we could actually do better, in terms of the long-term future of the club at least, but if he were available we should seriously look into it.

Nicko, there are two players plqaying in Portugal that could be very helpful for Rovers and that have their situation undefined:

- Paulo Assunção, from FC Porto. excellent defensive midfielder, doesnt want to sign a new contract and might be availablefor a very low fee.

- Cristian Rodriguez from SL Benfica. would be a great left midfielder, he is out of contract and been offered to clubs in all europe.

Any news of these ones?

according to telegraph today we are targetting the new essien-anthony annan

have you heard anything nicko??

It's a long-term interest. He was over a year or so ago. He's gone on loan to a Norwegian side to put him in the shop window. It's quite possible - in fact, very likely - that he is being watched again. I've heard no more than that.

I think it would be more a matter of whether Giggs and Scholes were prepared to leave Old Trafford, rather than us being able to attract them to our club.

I'd say we would be in a primary position to snap them both up. Scholes played at United with Hughes, he wouldn't need to move house, and I also think he would relish the chance to play for a Premier League club in the North West that perhaps is less likely to challenge United in the league - for this reason I just can't imagine him joining one of the 'bigger' clubs. Giggs on the other hand has played with Hughes at United, has played under him for Wales and probably knows him well.

stam was the best central defender in the world when he was sold and was the main reason United lost out on the title the year they sold him. They were in bits at the back without him.

I think Giggs and Scholes are far too iconic for Man U to be leaving quietly this summer. Personally, my gut feel is brilliant if it did happen but its not going to.

Anthony Annan on the other hand looks a real possibility especially given the track record of Sparky of persistence rewarding him with getting his man. The big question has to be the Work Permit and given the head-in-the-sand tightening of regulations today, I fear only having ten international caps won't be enough to get him into Rovers.

The lad looks far from out-of-place playing alongside Essien and given the fact that Essien is one of the best in the world now, that is a massive vote of confidence.

This could be interesting.

Scholes still has so much to offer. I'd be surprised if he left Old Trafford.

I'm a big fan of Essien who is in my opinion the most complete CM in world football at this moment in time.

If this Anthony Annan lad is dubbed the new Essien and is a similar type of player he is definately worth a look. Its interesting that Sparky has had him on trial before and is looking again at him.
