I was expecting someone really, really bad, and got the name of a to me unknown coach, with twenty years of experience from top clubs, top national teams and a recent history of success (Poland to the EC). He's managed some top players in his time, and I am sure he has connections around the world following his history.

He's old, but he'll probably get fired or sign for a bigger club in four years time anyway.. How about having Tugay as an assistant? ;)

Beenhakker is not as disappointing as i was expecting!!

The guys CV is better than Ten Cates, but he is too old. It'd be interesting if JW was sizing him up for a director of football type job, with Ince as the main man....

I would not be against such an idea....

Just out of interest, why were you so underwhelmed by him Nicko?

Of course Nicko could just be saying its Beenhakker to see where it appears. If he has totally made it up - it would show who lifts stories direct from here.

He did advise not to bet on him.

If that's the case you've just blown Nicko's cover! :D

Has Leo Beenhaker been mentioned?

Or Nicko could be lifting stories from me... ;)

This Leo Beenhakker seems like an interesting chap. Don't see why he is considered such a poor candidate. His CV is similar to that of Ten Cate. Age is against him but it is not defnitive: examples would be Bobby Robson and Ferguson.

Well worth an interview for me, got a very poor Polish outfit into the European Championships, seen everything in the game. The thing that is important is a) does he really want the job? B) has he got fire in his belly? c) does he have a strategy to take Rovers forward.

Not saying I defnately want him but I dont think JW should be criticised for checking him out.

I heard on Monday afternoon that John Williams was going to the Euro finals.

My heart skipped a beat at the thought of Bilic, maybe even Laudrup who is there, or just a thought that Shearer WAS back in.

But I was also in the dark about whether he was actually going to see old Henk and throw us all a dummy.

So I was a tad dejected to find it was the Saga option.

Beenhakker WAS a top coach in his time. But not now.

Yes, I wonder this too. His CV reads quite well and not as bad as I was fearing

Absolutely!

Sure he has some less-than-stellar "credits" on his resume (Poland, Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia - although he did take them all to major championships), but no colossal failures in the vein of Allardyce or McClaren!

I'll requote my point from last night just for people like jnw who expect Europe's elite to be lining up to manage us.

The biggest problem with the Rovers job, and the reason Shearer didn't take it IMO, is that whoever comes in knows that in all probability they can't take the club any more forward than we already are. We are more likely to go backward and that person will be classed as inferior to Hughes and possibly as a failure.

Maybe that's why the likes of Laudrup probably won't be interested in Rovers. It's a very, very difficult job to do at the moment.

His CV is way superior to Ten Cates in my opinion.

I'm interested to hear why a few are not keen on him though.

It was also him who got T&T to the world cup, and we all saw how gash they are in our recent game!

Real Madrid 86-89:3 times league winner and 1 cup win

These are great results.

You can't really lose the understanding of the game, so long as you're still "all there". The important thing is the desire and based on the challenges he continues to take on you'd have to say that for him that is not in doubt. He probably won't be able to be as hands-on as some coaches, but I don't know if that was ever his style anyway, but it also didn't appear to be Hughes'. With a good set of coaches to back him up his connections and knowledge could be exactly what we need. He has managed quite an amazing list of teams and nations and never failed. That isn't something you see that often.
