Newcastle has been linked with Joao Moutinho, from Sporting Lisbon.

His release clause is 25 million€. But the strange thing is the deal he has with Sporting: if any offer is made for Moutinho between 15 million and 25 million € and Sporting refuse it, they have to pay Moutinho 10% of the diference between the offer and the 15 milliion.

Aston Villa are interested in Pedro Mendes, from Portsmouth. According to O Jogo.

I would prefer Moutinho for 2 reasons: he is better than Veloso and his release clause is cheaper.

Moutinho is also a more mature player. I just hope he doesn't go to newcastle.

He would be great for us, if we had the money.

Spending all our cash on one good midfielder is very risky. Just like Barry Ferguson.

Id much rather we sold Mokoena & Roberts and then signed a pacey striker, a creative midfielder and maybe a versatile player that can play on either wing.

I'd be interested to see how much Walcott would cost. A front line of Walcott and Santa Cruz would be an exciting prospect. Like Bentley, I just think Theo needs a good run of games to reach his potential - he's still on 19.

If Theo was available for about 8-10m, I'd personally be tempted to let Bentley go for 15m, and then we'd probably still have 15m to spend on strengthening.

we have zero chance of getting walcott.

wenger actually said he sees theo out on the wing for about one more season, before he sees him leading the front line...

he's going nowhere

What you have forgotten there is that its up to Walcott whether he stays or not. If he has a hissy fit and says he wants to go Arsenal will let him for the right price. Wenger will not stand in his way.

Not that I believe we can afford him.

Hughesy - Gudjohnsen's wages are on the hysterical side of lunacy. c. 100,000 per week I think...

i think that has been one of our problems hughesy. this season and in the past, we have had too many players that have had to fill the role of a versatile bloke on the pitch and play in positions other than what they specialise in. i agree that we could sell, moko and jason roberts, and use that to help buy a pacey striker and a classy midfielder, but i jsut think we need specialist players...not blokes who can do fill in, when somebody is injured or suspended.

Some players that could be available for transfer that could interest us:

- Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea FC): Bosingwa just signed for Chelsea so he is probably on his way out.

Paulo "the penalty" Ferreira, no ta!

On the subject of Pennant from last night, never have I watched a player (in the flesh) fail to beat the first man on so many occasions!

I don't tend to post in this thread and I fully expect to be receiving the usual compliments from the usual suspects.

I have been speaking to somebody who is involved at the club and they have told me that there is a big belief that Hughes is going to give it a good overhaul this summer with a lot of outs and therefore a lot of ins.

The players mentioned that were no surprise were Berner, Henchoz, Gallagher and Roberts. Those that surprised were Dunn, Pedersen and Reid.

I have no reason to believe the person who told me this would be leading me or anyone else up the garden path.

Just passing on info I have been given, so shoot me down.

I can see Pedersen going as he has been poor for 18 months and Roberts going also if someone offers the correct cash provided we have replacements lined up for both. Berner, Henchoz, Gallagher are all definately out if anyone will take them. However I can't quite understand the logic behind getting rid of Reid and Dunn when a) No one would offer decent money for them B) Dunn has been pretty good this season and Reid is on his way back from injury c) We have a shortage of midfielders rather than a surplus of them.

It might be relevent though that Reid has been switched around the team a lot. It suggests maybe he just doesn't fit anymore.

Suprised your friend did not include Mokoena in the outgoings.

If that is true then I certainly won't lose any sleep over it.

The last three have performed well below expectations.

Pedro Mendes would be a decent signing, he could play the Tugay sort of role.

Liked the look of Jonny Howson from Leeds, he'd be a good buy if the do/don't go up.

As for the players from the relegated sides, Zarate, Larsson, Shorey, Hunt, Harper?

Dunn has been pretty good this season

He has permormed well on the odd occasion, but is not consistent enough to be a regular starter in our midfield. He is now a squad player at best.

Zarate is only on loan, Birmingham have the chance to sign him for £15m iirc, can't see them doing that but I guess there is the chance of him being loaned out for another season to raise his profile. Would be worth a look.

James Harper would be a very very good signing in my opinion. Think he has all of the attirbutes to be a very good player.

Okay I agree with that. I don't see Dunn as a regular starter but he is a good impact player who can play anywhere across the midfield. I would be suprised if we looked to sell him.

Reid on the other hand is a bit more difficult as he is more of a "work horse" type of player so not really much of substitute to bring on. But again I see little value in selling as no one would pay much and he could recover his old form. Worth persevereing with.

We need to be expanding the squad, not contracting it.

There is no way we should look to sell Dunn. He's got the skill to make a difference coming on as a substitute.

I'd also rather see players like Derbyshire and Dunn in the squad (even if they aren't quite good enough to get in the first team), than players like Bruno Berner clogging up the squad.

Nicko, do you think clubs will be holding their cash back until later, this year... what with Euro 2008?

I think you make a good point here. I hope that we try to seal some deals before the Euro 2008 starts. I think a lot of players will increase their value during the EC.

And for gods sake stay away from signing players who perform only in the EC (Diao)
