[Archived] Nicko's Thread Part 3

I too am angry not because he's wanting to go - we all knew he would - but because of the club he's going to if it turns out to be City. And i don't see why you seem so positive Nicko because at the moment I can't think of a single potential manager who I would actually say - yes, he's going to be better than Hughes - about. If someone could name some of these managers who we would be able to persuade to come to Rovers who weren't useless then perhaps I could get some positivity going, but at the moment I can't see anyone. I didn't have Hughes down as a hypocrite, but to talk about players honouring contracts etc etc etc and then want to jump ship to City at the first opportunity does not impress me at all. I find myself hoping that he fails miserably if he goes to City and I don't want to feel like that. I'd have been glad to say good luck if he'd gone to Chelsea or Utd but remembering those scenes at Ewood when City fans wrecked parts of our stands, threatened Rovers fans with tickets into selling them and doused my kids in beer when they stormed into the family stand at the end of the game I hope that if Hughes goes there he leads them to relegation. Childish and petty I know but that's how I feel.

It's true, I am not against change but then again only if it potentially can be positive.

Just having a general discussion in the office. There is not that many decent managers around.

Lot of people are saying we are sc*ewed, and sadly, I tend to agree.

Hughes was a big time manager and we were fortunate to get talent like Bentley, Santa in. Not saying its impossible with the new man. But I would be very surprised.

Nicko, do you think the Rovers board have been preparing for this and will have been researching alternatives to Hughes since he was linked with Newcastle?

Hughes was a fantastic appointment by JW but was that luck or does he know his football? What kind of manager do you think they'd mostly go for? I'd imagine it'll be another young one like Ince or Collins but I'd hope they'd look at people like Terim and Advocaat. They are older but will surely be interested in doing well in the Premiership...

You can kick names about all day long.

But until your manager actually goes there is never a point having a list because it's only THEN that you need to see who is available.

For example, Laudrup would have been sensational last week, now he looks like he's gone.

Nicko how sure are you that Thaksin isn't prepared to splash big money? If it's the same sources that told you Citeh weren't interested in Hughes then it may be worth checking with others!! Not having a pop I know you're only passing on what you are told but I didn't think it was possible to hate Citeh more than I already do..until now.

Do agree with some comments though about the change not necessarily being a bad thing. I do think there is some mileage in what Waggy says about 3 years being the lifespan for many managers. Hughes did make some strange moves last season at times and it was a season of what ifs. Obviously the big key is who we bring in.

I echo the sentiments about city - why on earth hughes would want to go there is anybody's guess? Id also be bitter if he took santa cruz with him.

However, I also agree with comments about 3 years being a good lifespan for a manager, particularly at a club like rovers. If Souness had left after 3 years he'd be regarded as one of our best ever managers. Hughes probably believes he has taken us as far as he can, the board have probably not guaranteed him the funds he wants and he obviously wants a new challenge.

If Hughes goes, Id want Shearer in. Its a gamble because he has no experience but he'd be popular with the fans and he also be able to attract bigger names to Ewood than others. Certainly wouldnt want Allardyce!

They just had a guy from Manchester Evening news on Talksport and he reckons its 99% certain Hughes will appointed the next city manager within the next 7-10 days.

Not sure i agree, i still think its a move to tempt Chelsea.

And people can't be serious about Shearer, he will be off like a shot if Newcastle come calling.

Just to clarify. I said last week that City had sounded out Sparky a month ago on an unofficial basis. At the time he said no because he didn't think they had the cash.

On Friday and Saturday I checked the rumour that they had made an official approach. The club's official spokesman said no. He wasn't lying...they hadn't at the time.

I did warn that could change, but you have to understand who is running the Man City bid for him.

What you will find out is if City DO have the cash - and I mean to pay NOW - and that may be very interesting.

I know from other stories that City try to do everything 'on the drip.'

There is NO WAY Rovers would accept that. That is a huge part of this picture.

If thats the case then that would mean that Shearer would have done a good job during his time here.

How would that be a bad thing?

He's gone. If we've given him permission to speak to City then Hughes must have told us that he's interested, if not why would we accept the approach?

As far as I'm concerned Hughes is no longer the manager of this club.

I agree, be it Citeh or Chelski, Hughes is out of the door.

All comes down to the timing as to how Rovers move forward if, heaven forbid, we need a new manager. The sooner things are resolved the sooner the search for a decent replacement can come in, and the sooner they can get the players needed in. Speed is the key, as I don't want Rovers to wait until near the end of the window, although on the flipside, we don't want to rush and appoint the first name that applies, and end up in the Fizzy Pop!

Sounds like total rubbish to me.

If there's another 7-10 days to go then there are a lot of things to be finalised, indeicating to me that there are a lot of things a deal could be broken over. So, if indeed that is the case, then the likelihood is a good deal less than 100%.

I think the club has been on top of this since the very day Sparky was appointed. I firmly believe Williams has had at least a couple of candidatess in mind since that very time. Also as time as passed under Sparky's tenure I am sure one or two new faces will have his interest. If we remember, from day one Wiliams stated he knew Sparky was to leave for greener pastures so I am sure Wiliams and the money people have been monitoring replacements. To not do so would be almost remiss.

Conspiracy theory here. Had Mr Williams already decided it was time for change and were finances the reason for this? One could say that looking purely in monetary terms this could make good sense. Rovers let Hughes go getting a nice compo package in the process, with Sparky gone our saleable players could then be sold at terrific profits. The 10 Mil promised to Sparky somehow goes away for the new fella and he is forced to work with only a fraction of the income from the sale of our best players.

No I am not smokin anything but probably should.

Why are we obsessed with hiring a former player?

Any prospective investor would look at the clubs profile , rovers with alan shearer as manger would excite them more than rovers with sam allardyce or steve coppell etc , personally i would love shearer to come alongside a more experienced no.2

The 1% being it won't take that long even.
