colin Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I'm looking over to Piccadilly Gardens too, and I've never seen anything like it. Buses stopped, trams stopped, shops closed, roads closed. There was an estimate that 100,000 would come down, and that might have been right. I suppose that when it'd your first European final since 1972 and it's being played a couple of hundred miles down the M6 then it's as good as a home game. The atmosphere was tense & electric at lunch time when I went out to the bank. God knows what it'll be like by KO. If they get beaten I don't suppose there will be much of Manchester City centre left by tomorrow. Oh, and the amount of beer - even at 12:30 - was mind-boggling.

I jumped off the train yesterday evening at Halifax and there were three getting on the train to Manchester even then. They looked as though they would slum it and start drinking at breakfast time this morning.
Eddie Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 One of the owners at the bar I work at was talking to me about how the night before the opening game of the '98 world cup (Brazil v Scotland) the bar he was working in at the time was invaded by Scottish fans. He said that by the end of the night they had drunk literally every drop of alcohol in the place, regardless of what it was, which under normal circumstances, even with busy nights and without new stock coming in, would take quite a while (particularly on the non-beer, non common liquors).
T4E Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 One of the owners at the bar I work at You work at a bar?!?!
Ozz Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Yea-It's one of them bars that allows the employees to post 40 times a day on the internet.
Exiled_Rover Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Yea-It's one of them bars that allows the employees to post 40 times a day on the internet. Isn't Eddie a student? Anyway Manchester had best hope Rangers win. Otherwise the centre is getting trashed methinks.
Paul Mellelieu Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I work close to Albert Square and the place is a complete mess; a load of foul drunk yobbos using historic buildings as open lavs as the cops look on. usual anti- IRA songs

I wouldn't expect anything less to be honest. I was over at the second Old Firm a couple of weeks back. I went with a Celtic supporters club, of which I'm not a member and they weren't singing The Wheels On The Bus, that's for sure.
stuwilky Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Just come back on the train from Preston, where they all have to change. Absolute chaos in Preston and the trains are crammed full. They're even on Leyland station. Still chaos at 5.30pm I even stayed at work late to try and avoid some of it!
Raymond Rover Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Managed to get home in one piece by avoiding town altogether and just going on the motorway. I would have got into town at 5 and tried to get a bus otherwise, would have been a long walk home *phew*.
Eddie Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 You work at a bar?!?! I've mentioned it twice. I'm sorry T4E, I thought the story applied, it's an amazing feat when you really think about it. You can put that in the category of the "Italian girlfriend".
savage8 Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 leeds station was full of them at about 5, one was absolutely wasted, f'in and blinding, idiot
Presty On Tour Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 i just wish it was us taking over manchester but we got beaten by a girl a long time ago!
deryck guyler's spoon Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I've been in the city all day and The Rangers fans were absolutely phenominal!! I didn't see a bit of bother they were a credit to their country. Good luck to 'em.
Exiled_Rover Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 20 odd thousand of them in the City of Manchester, 100k+ on the streets of Manchester, 25k at Ibrox and rumoured to be 30k+ outside. Jesus, if only we had that kind of support.
thenodrog Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 usual anti- IRA songs There's nothing wrong with mocking an anti-British terrorist organisation is there Paul?

EwoodGlory Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 BBC NEWS - SKY Channel 503 Now. One of the big screens in Manchester is not working, so there is some rioting already.
Billy Castell Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Offer free Tennants, that might calm the situation!
allrovertheworld Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 There are 3000 or so Rangers fans camped at Burnage Rugby club, few 100 minutes from my flat. Anyone for a spot of looting. I don't think there will be anyone there at this time.
allrovertheworld Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 few 100 minutes from my flat. That was a mixture of a few minutes and 100 metres.
Billy Castell Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 1-0 to Zenith Data Systems. Time to rebuild Manchester.
Hughesy Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Just 1 min to go. Zenit deserve the win. They have been by far the best team. Seem to have a couple of handy players too.
Raymond Rover Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Oh my it is going to be interesting seeing the city centre tomorrow.....
