BuckyRover Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Every team that has scored first has won. Only Russia have scored a goal against a team that went on to win.

grizfoot Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 What piece of magic from Ibrahimovic. Hopefully Sweden can now go and cause an upset against the Spainards. Go Sverige!
Lathund Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 What piece of magic from Ibrahimovic. Hopefully Sweden can now go and cause an upset against the Spainards. Go Sverige! We did beat them at home in the qualifiers, but when we played them in Spain they were just so, so much better. I don't think we have much of a chance there tbh, but then again all we really need now is a draw against Russia or Spain and we're through. Could go through with 3 points as well but it's unlikely. ETA: Well technically we're not guaranteed to go through with 4 points. But we're likely to.
Commondore Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Sweden played with 4 players from our less than impressive domestic league and still managed to make a good performance. Hopefully we can get some of our better players back in shape for the match against Spain and then take it from there... Sure, they looked good against the Ruskies earlier today, but playing against such an unorganized and high-positioned defence line is like handing them 3 goals from the start. It will be a whole other business against a gritty Swedish side!
Rover4ever Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Will have to be very harsh on Greece, they won Euro 2004 after playing 3 games scoring 3 headers from free kicks and defende stellarly. However they are hopeless when they concede first....... Against Sweden they didnt have any attacking ability whatsoever and looked hopeless while chasing the game. Still it was better than an incident in first half when the greek defenders played 20 odd balls between them, and then Dellas kicked the ball out of play with no Greek attacker within 30 yards of his "pass".
RoyRover Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 There is no doubt for me that the Spanish performance was the best that we have seen so far. Villa and Torres up front were brilliant while Xavi and Iniesta ran the show in midfield. They look like they are capable of winning the whole thing, but we have said that before and they have failed to produce. The Russians weren't that bad actually. They have some class players themselves and created a number of good chances and deserved their goal. Their defence was the problem and if they could ever get this sorted out, then they would be very strong. They obviously aren't the same team when they travel away from Moscow. I was glad that Sweden won last night. They were the side that tried to play football and create chances. The Greeks were awful and didn't deserve anything. Ibrahimovic's goal was fantastic. He is a world class striker and is a star for Inter Milan, but always under performs for Sweden. He didn't play particularly well last night, but his goal was class. It will be either them or Russia to go through with Spain IMO.
philipl Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Fascinating contrast in styles- Russia tried to play measured international chessboard football whereas Spain had the power and accuracy to tear a very good defence to pieces. Russia fortunate they have Greece next as they can call on Arshavin after his suspension in what will probably be the Group decider. Russia v Greece could be a grim match.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Some great performances by both Spain and Holland, however i still think Germany will win this tournament.
bennyboyt11 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 cracking game from the spanish... this tournament is looking to be a real crowd pleaser with there being only a single draw so far, bloody froggies
LeftWinger Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 The fact I've got a fiver on Spain to win the tournament with Villa top scorer at 50/1 made the game very enjoyable last night
Hasta Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Does anyone know what happens if two teams finish level on points in their group. Is it result against each other or goal difference?
brian_gallagher85 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I believe I heard on the Beeb it went down to head to head
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Portugal for me look far from solid, i think they are going to come a cropper when they face a better team.
Presty On Tour Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 The nicest of weather in Basel this evening
cn174 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 The nicest of weather in Basel this evening Helped Yakin score the easiest goal ever!! (though he's just missed a sitter!)
brian_gallagher85 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 He almost missed the one he did score too They're going to need one hell of a big sponge at half time!!
Presty On Tour Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 i'm sure the divers will be in their element
Dunnfc Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 The conditions have made the game brilliant, one of the best games so far.
American Rover12 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I wonder what the odds are on the game being abandoned.
thenodrog Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 The conditions have made the game brilliant, one of the best games so far. Bloody superb stuff and that bloody nob Shearers ruined it! I've been a taj preoccupied by him coming out with that stuff at HT.
Hasta Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 What happens if the Czechs and Turkey draw their final game. They'll be level on points with exactly the same records with regards to goals scored and against.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Looking forward to the Croatia v Germany game tommorrow. Croatia were far from convincing in their first game and Germany looked their usual effcient self.
