Brownie Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Steve McClaren over Allardyce/Jewell any day This is getting like being asked how you would like to die
dj54nna Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 This is getting like being asked how you would like to die "Would you rather have Big Fat AIDS or Steve McCancer?"
LeChuck Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 If Sam comes, fans wont, money dries up quicker than Tesco Value vodka in Essex = doom Also, Sam never nurtured talent. I would seriously be worried about any signings for the future made under Sam. Warnock, Samba etc were all inspired for a club our size and budget. Campo and Hierro at Bolton were coups, yes, but hardly surprising they turned out as decent signings. He nurtured players like Nolan, Gardner, Jaaskelainen, O'Brien, Ben Haim etc. from nobodies in to solid Premiership players. I don't think 'nurturing' is a strong side of Hughes' management anyway, I don't think his record stands any better than Allardyce's. I can see why people don't want Big Sam, there are some very good reasons, but a lot of people are spouting unfounded and irrational things about him (general comment, not aimed at you Parasyte).
LeChuck Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Georgios Donis been mentioned? or Henning Berg? Why the obsession with wanting ex-players? I don't see what relevance it has to them being able to spot bargains, have great tactical knowledge etc. Hughes was a success with us because he's a very good manager, the fact that he played for us is coincidental. If we make an appointment based on sentiment then we'll be royally screwed.
Eddie Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Let's break it down this way. Manager who: Has shown he get sign players on a small budget who turn out to be effective Who can get a squad to overachive Who can get the best out of players Who can get players to develop Is fairly well respected within the game. He fits the bill. He's not my first choice, but anyone who thinks he shouldn't be in the running is doing it for simply person reasons, which isn't normally the smartest reason in a business.
FourLaneBlue Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Hughes has gone...after his desperation to speak to Newcastle was glossed over we can´t go back now that he demanded to speak to Man City. The man wants away and he will get it soon. His time has come and all managers do have a shelf life. He wants out and to a richer club. I don´t blame him either as he has done a fine job for us. This club as on its knees when he came in and he will be remembered among our bettter managers. Hard to see past Allardyce at this point. The other candidates either have big flaws or are in a job. The gnashing of teeth over his playing style is not so important as we have played plenty of tedious fotoball this past year never mind the first season when Hughes took over and inflicted 4-5-1 on us. It worked well and was necessary but did we all stop supporting Rovers cos we didnt play like Barca? Of course not. We all wanted the best for the club. I think we should wait a bit and weigh up the options. A candidate might just come into who fits us down to the ground. There is none so far. Big Fat Sam seems to be the best option at the moment...and I would be ok with him being manager but hardly ecstatic...I dont think he is anywhere near being the ideal choice. Those calling for Advocaat have obviously been watching the Beeb in the last few weeks. Talk about flavour of the month. The are many good managers who are down on their luck...Advocaat was a few years ago...those are the kind we may have to aim for rather than bosses being praised. The problem is that we dont have an ideal choice...at least not at the moment...
Shaddy Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Disappointed in Hughes - thought he was morte intelligent and had more class than to go grovelling to the likes of City. Personally, I believe he is forcing Chelsea's hand more than anything. If they are serious, they will have to play their hand now. If they are not, well of course it is entirely possible Hughes will like what he sees in Manchester.
Shaddy Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Graeme Souness anyone? I actually wouldn't mind it... but with remnants remaining of the squad he left behind, I reckon there would be a player rebellion.

Iceman Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 If chelsea dont appoint Rijkaard, the a combination of Rijkaard and Shearer would be brilliant.wouldnt mind Houllier either, would be superb and might bring some Lyon players to ewood.
Welshrover1981 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Well whoever we get they must be good enough to keep the likes of Bentley and Roque. According to the papers, both are lined up by Man City and Man Utd respectively.
brian_gallagher85 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Iccers there's is more chance of you getting the job...turn FM off and step away from the Computer! 100% agree with you there Florida Rover, never want to see him here again...same can be said for Hughes now from my point of view.
Blackburn Ender Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Bit worrying that BFS is reported to have returned early from holiday to hold talks with Rovers' directors. And his name crops up a lot in today's papers.
modes98 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Bit worrying that BFS is reported to have returned early from holiday to hold talks with Rovers' directors. And his name crops up a lot in today's papers. Nicko has said that he doesn't think BFS will be in the frame and that he has come back to make himself a viable option for city once Hughes goes to chelsea.
EwoodGlory Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Would/should Alan Shearer be considered? I hope so. Shearer for Rovers, say no to Big Sam.
rover6 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 A few people, including Nicko were touting the name Coppell. Now, I think we could do a lot worse but there is one outstanding quality that divides Coppell and Hughes. Ambition. Hughes has this remarkable self-belief which is rare in managers. Whilst most refuse to talk about progress and targets, Hughes apparently, sets his players monthly targets and was not afraid to talk up our UEFA cup ambitions. Coppell is the opposite, in that he fears building expectations and, I believe, his capability as a boss is limited by this. But again, we could do a lot worse. (Also, Coppell has been hinting that he wants to take a break from footy.)
Blueheart Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Please, please not Allardyce or Mclaren. If Hughes goes he will rip the heart of the club, taking all his backroom staff with him along with the better players we have. We could be doomed to the long ball tactics of Allardyce or the sterile football of Mcclown. Do they give refunds for season tickets !
EIEIEIO Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Allardyce is the man for the job. Would fit rovers like an M&S suit. Also Billy Davis, Simon Grayson, Chris Coleman or Neil Warnock. Rovers must not be mister nice guy as they have in the past, if we want someones manager we do to that club what other clubs have done to us. If MacLaren is given it we'll be relegated, simple as. We must also be realistic a read earlier Riijard/Shearer double act, get real.
