I would go for Big Sam. Was not a fan of his in the past, but has shown he can work on a small budget. Plus, after the recent Newcastle fiasco, I see him being happy at a club like Rovers for a number of years, not leaving for a club like City or Spurs. Now if a job at one of the biggest clubs in the world became available, like Birmingham......

That being said, I'm not a big fan of his style of play, however effective, and the fact he managed Bolton.

If we appoint this man as manager it will be a disaster, the same thing applies to Mc Laren.

Setanta reporting that on the betting side BFS is still favourite but the odds on Shearer have shortened from 50-1 this morning to 7-1 second favourite and Ince third fav. I can`t see BigAl as manager?

I guess the one huge plus for Shearer is that players would want to come and play for him. Whether or not he has a tactical brain is another matter though, and I'm not just talking about getting the coaching badges.

Edit: One name on the bookies list that frightens me is David O'Leary. He's available and has a half decent pedigree, it wouldn't surprise me if he appealed to the board...I bloody hope not though.

<_<

Good, bad or indifferent?

No rush for a replacement

Which means if Bentley gets sold in the meantime a new manager may have the thick end of 15 million quid to play with if you chuck in a bit of the City comp as well . Pretty ironic considering Hughesy never had a big budget to play with.

So the bottom line is who do we trust to spend that money wisely ?

I think most fans would agree we should take our time if it means we get it right.

Does that mean I can now stop pressing F5 every 10th second?

This particular line gives me hope and the belief we have a very decent chairman:

Williams said he felt Hughes' profile had risen over the past year: "We got an indication round about the New Year when the Newcastle job became available.

"There was a lot of media speculation that promoted Mark to one of the favourites for that.

"I'd have to say that at that point in the back of your mind you are thinking about what would happen if Mark was to decide he wanted to move on."

Which hopefully means he has been thinking about it for some time and has some good candidates in mind.

Also it means we can watch out for some of the Euro 08 managers who may not make it through to the World Cup.

Been doing my head in this all week, but I've finally remembered his name now :D . Champagne Charlie Nicholas, no management experience that I know of, but the man really seems to have a soft spot for Rovers and I always really enjoy listening to his reviews of games on Soccer Saturday

I dont think Rovers have the time they might require to make the correct appointment.

Rovers fixture list is out in 2 weeks time.

Rovers return to pre season training in 4 weeks time.

Rovers have a high profile tournament to play in about 8 weeks time.

They are going to be replacing the infrastructure of the management on the playing side of the club. Bowen and co are almost certain to leave with Hughes within the next few days.

That wont be easy and for that reason alone I think we can rule out the likes of Newell/Shearer and co.

This appointment has to be as least 10 days before we start preseason in fact maybe sooner to allow the planning process to continue. Rovers plans are in place for preseason but will need fine tuning with the new gaffer and his staff.

As of this moment, Faz remains at City as do the other back room staff not ousted from their positions. I cant see their academy taking our academy staff so they will all stay put. I dont think Hughes will take Hodges as City have a good second string set up already in place.

Sparky was three weeks from Souness walking to Hughes being signed.

I'd guess a similar timescale will be involved this time.

The key date is the players' return for pre-season training as at the moment Flopsy and Ricky are on standby for organising the bibs and bollards stuff.

I'll repeat what I said about transfers- none in for sure but unless there is an offer which goes into the "we'd be idiots not to" figures, every enquiry will be rebuffed with a "not for sale" and "we will allow our new management team time to assess the playing strength before making any decisions" if anybody gets persistent.

Allardyce's training session.

No wonder our new foreign players didn't have a clue what to do.

Having watched Ranieri's training sessions with Juve, that is antediluvian. I think I've slipped into the anti-BFS camp having watched that.

Being a Newcastle season ticket holder I've sat through nearly all of fat Sam's games in charge this season, believe me lads you won't like it.

Nearly all of us were optimistic about him taking over thinking what he could do with a bigger budget after doing a great job at Bolton, early warning signs went out when he decided to replace Kieron Dyer with his pace and energy with Alan Smith and his big sliding tackles but most ignored that thinking he knew what he was doing, what followed was some of the worst football seen at SJP since we've been back in the Premiership.

Whether it was watching 70 yard long balls played from the back up to midgets like Martins and Owen or him insisting every throw in had to be a long one into the box by Geremi I'm not sure but the novelty soon wore off, it was likely to have been the time we were played off the park by Derby County at Pride Park, their only win in the top flight that really done it come to think of it, 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go and he's still getting everyone behind the ball like we were the team defending the lead.

Then there's his obsession with prozone, this is what he had to say when people questioned the long ball rubbish he was serving up every week...

“Too direct? If those players had the ability to look at their ProZone stats instead of me shouting at them, they would have learnt more about their game than they’ve ever done. They would have learnt something about themselves."

In the wacky World of fat Sam: Football manager things you see with your own eyes don't count because prozone said we played more short balls than long ones, ignoring that most of the short balls were played between the defenders before knocking it back to Given to boot as far as he can down field. :D

Easily for me to laugh about it now because he's gone but it was awful at the time, some might think I'm being bitter towards the bloke but they will find out the hard way if he does join you, on the plus side we'll have a likely buyer for Alan Smith this Summer. ;)

That makes for grim reading - thanks anyway!

Aye, cheers Baggio. Grim reading that and a welcome reminder - just in case it was needed.

Just to divert attention away from our predicament for a brief minute. What's your take on Keegan's return? Has he still got it?
