Name me a championship side that has players of similar quality to Benni, RSC, Bentley or Friedel? None. Now move onto our second ring of talents like Nelsen, Samba, MGP, Ooijer, Zurab, Vogel, Warnock or Emerton? None. Derbyshire, Roberts or Reid?

We can play ourselves down, but we have a good squad with a few holes that can easily be filled. That is not a championship level squad. Championship size support maybe. Championship level of income (excluding prize money and tv deals)? Certainly. That squad deserves its place in the top half of the premiership. Couple good signings and some tactics that actually work and things could be very good.

I was merely agreeing with another poster that compared a side like Wolves to Rovers

noting that not much difference existed.... perhaps im off base, but i'm quite scared

of making a wrong turn here and falling into oblivion...

perhaps I should have put it that way.....

That is a very scary thought. I've got this picture of him in my head, circling Ewood like one of those big black birds of prey..............

Tell you what mum.... IF and it is a big IF I hope  ... but IF we should be raided by the Prem vultures and lose the likes of Bentley / RSC / Warnock / Friedal, then of all the names being mentioned as managerial candidates I would want Sam Allardyce in charge over and above any or indeed all of the rest being linked with the job. Rookies / Johnny foreigner / old players would all crumple under that sort of pressure imo. Moving on if the worst happened and we got relegated then Sam would likely be the best option to get us back. At this time pretty football is a secondary choice to points imo.

I'm sad to say that I do not see very many positives in the near future for our hopes of building on the position that Hughes has got us accustomed to.

I am inclined to agree, theno.

I've just remembered, I was driving past Bolton's training ground when Sam was being sacked from there, and there was a large flock of crows circling it.

It was a premonition *goes to have hysterics behind the sofa*.

But there must be someone, anyone, who can do better? If Big Sam came the players would want to leave.

Big name continental manager would help us keep the better players. Maybe Houllier, Advocaat, Jol, Deschamps

Of those, Jol for me. I thought he did an excellent job at Spurs.

Sorry, folks, for the double post. It's that ruddy refresh button again.

It's hard to know what to think at the moment, everything is up the air, no one wants to buy us, the manager has left us and the best player soon to be players want to leave. How can we appeal to managers when a manager who after 3 years has so cleary out grown the club (with no other experience apart from Wales), For me that rules out so many quality managers as doing better than MH is a big big task, I'm sure this has happened after JW told MH there's 5mill to spend unless you sell Bents. We're left with the Rubbish of BFS or Mclaren, Why Bother with Shearer who leave for the Geordies after 5 mins. Who is there out there?? please JW pull off something special. Thank god your there and i'm here.

just how convinced is everyone that the multi, multi, multi millionaire bung taking fatman has the desire to be arsed to give 100% towards making rovers the best they can be on a shoestring! I for one ain't. Seen a programme on big city hedgefund managers one mistake and u never work again, i hope mr williams thinks along those lines when assessing candidates. 100% convinced the board are just delaying the inevitable for about a week just so appointing the bung-meister does'nt look as kneejerk as it is. Been looking at newcastles signings last summer and it does'nt bode well.........got a horrible feeling that when bents and roque are off they are liable to be replaced with fletcher and saha....######

on a side note u realise how small a club we are with how little us currently being without a manager seems to be deemed newsworthy! its all man.city and chelsea not even mentioning we are looking for a manager....we'll have to bid for ronaldo to get some attention.....why can't wind up merchant journalists link mcclown to the chelsea job and not us....it should be deemed unrealistic that we would consider him in the same way it is commom sense he would'nt waste a stamp sending his cv to the bridge!!!!!!

Mentioned him nore than once but noone seems to want to discuss his merits. Stellar job at Bristol City, one of my, should take a look at candidates.

http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk/sport/sp...er_new_boss.php

"We are tuned in to the broadest possible bandwidth to make sure we don't miss out on anything.

"I want to hear from as many people as possible, who are genuinely interested in taking the club forwards, and then once we've drawn up a shortlist, we will make an informed decision.

"We needed a certain type of manager when Graeme (Souness) came in, and we felt Mark Hughes was the right man for that time when we appointed him.

"Now the situation is different again. We've got a strong squad of players and we will identify the right type of manager to take us forwards, and then match that to the list of people who have expressed an interest."

Although Williams is disappointed to lose Hughes, after almost four years, he revealed he started preparing, at least in his own mind, for life after the Welshman once he got linked with the Newcastle job earlier this year.

"We had a first taste of this in January, when the Newcastle job cropped up," said Williams.

"That sets your mind running and I would be lying if I said the thought process didn't start after that.

"It's only when it becomes reality that you then have to start thinking about acting on it, and that's the situation we find ourselves in now.

"I have an idea of the direction in which we want to go, and so I should because you have to prepare yourself for this eventuality.

"This is a very good job and it will be highly sought after.

"I'd like to think there's a growing appreciation within the game that this is an attractive job to have.

"Someone will be lucky enough to get it and then when they do, they will have the responsibility of taking on a top half Premier League team and trying to make us better."

Great Chairman :brfcsmilie:

Not great enough, no offence intended, but I thought he would already have a nailed on successor in mind. That tells me he is nowhere near that. Unless he's being deliberately coy.

Thinking you'll be able to scratch Cruz and Bentley of that list REAL quick like. Warnock won't be far behind either.

No, he's keeping an open mind, that's much better than deciding on one guy so soon and forgetting about all the other options.

John Williams has set out his stall very clearly- the job requiremnents and quality of manager are to be assessed first and then matched to the candidates.

The fact those comments made by JW are just about the first sane move by anybody in football this week is probably why they have gone completely unreported in the wider press.

As Rovers supporters, perhaps we ought to be looking at characteristics rather than personalities.

I compared us to championship sides. The reason half those players are with Rovers is because of our manager(s) and the fact that we're in the premier league of course. My point was that now we have lost Hughes we will struggle to retain our best players, struggle even harder to attract quality new ones and could therefore, find ourselves in a long battle against relegation next season. If we do go down, we will then not have either of the things that seperate us from most championship sides and could be there for a very very long time.

I fear a relegation battle next season and you are right about the risks. However, Rovers are a thoroughbread Premiership outfit throughout the club and although a lot can be easily and quickly lost, Rovers Premier League quality will also give the new boss a great deal more substance and support than Hughes has in all probability gone to at City.

Even the money at City as Nicko has mentioned, tends to be drip fed out and before Hughes went there the stories were about them needing to sell and that is only a week ago.

The challenge Rovers have now is the balance between glamour and competence. Glamour to keep and attract top half of the Prem players to Ewood against actually being very good at the day-to-day job.

I don't think there are any English candidates that are likely to tick both boxes.

Anyone else hear Mark Bowen's interview with Alan Brazil on Talksport this morning? Apparently, Hughes and his staff have been looking for a club to "take them to the next level for a couple of years."

Doesn't surprise me, his taken us as far as we can go. We just cant compete with teams who spend millions year after year. I do think that we need a manager sooner rather than later, because many of our players will be looking around for new clubs as Hughes has left. Bentley may well go to Citeh, Santa could go to Utd, and maybe Warnock will be sold to city too. Plus when Hughes transfers some of his staff to Citeh then we'll have a crisis if there is no manager in place by the time the team comes back from their holidays.
