[Archived] Next Rovers Manager

Recommended Posts

The list of great players who went on to be, unexpectedly, total duds as managers is very long.

Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton immediately spring to mind. I don't think Chelsea fans were too enamoured about Geoff Hurt's spell in charge at the Bridge, either.

Shearer is just a massive gamble. He's a total unknown. So the odds of success would be unknown and the price of failure is massive. Really doesn't sound too clever to me.

Have to admit, I really don't envy John Williams and the board on this one. The players really liked Hughes and his staff, plus the fact he brought most of them to the club.

I think with the current bunch of managerial candidates it could be so easy to get it wrong and so difficult to get it right.

Dunn believes the loss of the quartet will leave Rovers with a massive void to fill. "A lot of what we've achieved over the last couple of years is down to Mark and his backroom staff," said the midfielder.

I think that the players need to stop believing all the hype around Hughes and his team and realise that it was them that put all the hard work in. They need to believe in themselves.

There is more to come from the likes of Dunn, Reid, Pedersen & McCarthy so hopefully our next manager can get the best out of them - if so then we are already a better team.

Yes Hughes was good in the transfer market and yes he had us very fit - but a new manager can surely use the sports science too and he has the same bunch of players to start with.

That's presumably what a new manager will be telling them. At school we tend to keep the same bunch of kids year in year out for the first few years. Kids opting for French in yr 10 are scared because they get used to one teacher's way of doing things. My year 9's are already saying, "Will we get you next year, Miss" but the answer is almost certainly no. Then they start saying "But I only chose French to be in your class" It's not because they love me but because they don't know what to expect from anyone else. Fact is most do much better with a change of teacher, not because I'm bad at my job but because they have to concentrate, get used to new ways of doing things and work just that bit harder. they don't want to let themselves down or you down so they want to impress. Many footballers are like big kids who are scared because they don't know what to expect from new managers. Give it a few weeks and, if we make the right appointmant, they really will be saying "Hughes was good but this is just as good/ better"

Laudrup has made a few coments about his future (http://www.bold.dk/nyt/?vis=84751).

The link is in danish, but to sum it up it says that he is open to any challange, and he is quoted saying:

- I favor Spain, but it not likely that my next job is in Spain

- Some say that the English Leauge doesn't suit me, but the english game is not the way it was 15 years ago

He refuses to comment on specific clubs until he has signed a deal.

I think he could be tempted, but I'm sure he'll be jumping ship as soon as there is a decent offer from Spain. Can Rovers live with that? Panathinaikos couldn't...

Being Spanish and knowing Laudrup quite well, I don't like him as coach. He's too polite, too kind... too soft. And he's an expert in losing the decisive games due to nerves and lack of experience.

Hey guys, first post.

Ive been a Rovers fan ever since the 93/94 season and have followed Rovers almost as much as my local club Hibernian.

However as much as i Love the Rovers i will terminate my support if they hire Sam Allardyce as Manager.

I do not want a cheat associated with my club, his style of football is awful and he likes to have fellow cheats and bullies who kick players off the pitch and dive left, right and centre.

A few of you will think im being daft but its just how i feel. i hate cheats in the game. i have sat by and watched the mercenary Willie Mackay sew the money seed in 2 of Hibernians best players to engineer a move to the Old firm and the man has a close relationship to Big Sam!

so heres hoping for a quality manager who has proven his skill ie. Houllier who would do an amazing job with the Rovers unlike McLaren or Allardyce.

Rant over, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Back the club WHOEVER they appoint for christs sake.....and grow a backbone!

Tens of thousands will still continue to support this great club WHATEVER happens and quite frankly we dont need that sort of negativity right now,we need our fans to close ranks not abandon ship if the manager does not tick all your boxes. We all have our personal favourites and we all have our worries but this is not an easy decision for all concerned at Ewood, let us as fans not make it any harder for the likes of John Williams etc.

SUPPORT THE CLUB SCOTTISH ROVER!

Been there, done that, and got the book, T shirt and film already with Willie Mackay and Souness I'm afraid.

I wasn't aware Allardyce liked to deal with Mackay, but if that's correct I'm sure it will be a big negative to his chances.

So there's a good chance you won't be too upset.

Although as SG194 says, we have to carry on supporting the club whoever is appointed.

did you cover your ears and scream lalalalalalalalala whilst the panorama documentary was on last year?

You obviously did, despite all the hype and build up there was nothing whatsoever uncovered relating to Allardyce.

His daft son seemed to have breached various regulations relating to agents but that was about it as I recall.

my apologies, ill just put it simply.

i really dont want allardyce in charge because of his style of football and other reasons (including family members)

You should have been around in the 70's, then you would understand the real big problems that BRFC have overcome!

It won't happen, but fat sam would be a temporary blimp, just like the dingle one,

For what its worth, the vote on the official board stands at:

Shearer 26%

Advocaat 18%

Ince 11%

Bilic 9%

Allardyce 7%

Laudrup 7%

Someone else 7%

Houllier 6%

Strachan 2%

Newell 1%

McClaren 0%

I thought they had ten Cate as an option and plenty of people said they had voted for him but he isn't there now. Perhaps he is the missing 6% as that lot only adds up to 94%.

Storming performance by McClaren by the way!

Maybe I am becoming disullusioned with the rest on that list, but I would be interested to know if Houllier would want it.

I know he had a chequered time at Liverpool, but his profile must make him one of the better candidates.

He knows how to develop young players and could probably work on a smaller budget (due to contacts within the game etc).

Gérard Houllier profile......

I'd like to see Houllier in a director of football role. I think his contacts and scouting abilities are great, but his management abilities are as bad as Rafa's (even though he did better in the league).

In fairness his support would not be much of a loss. Glory supporters who follow Rovers are rare and by his own admission he started supporting them only when we approaching the peak of our recent success and doesn't appear to have any other link to the club. But he does make a good point about Allardyce and I am similarly very strongly against him becoming our next Rovers manager. I'm genuinely surprised that as many people have voted for Allardyce as they have for Laudrup and Houllier (and many more than Newell.

I saw the news that Shearer already has a team together, waiting to join him in his first management role, including Tim Flowers and Mike Newell. I've been saying I would prefer more experience but I would be optimistically excited if the three of them came together albeit mostly down to nostalgia and admittedly that should not influence who our next manager is but I fully trust John Williams to ask the right question and pick a suitable bloke and if he decides Shearer and his team are upto it then they have my full support (and to a certain degree the same applies to Allardyce: simply put, I trust John Williams' judgement above all else right now).
