gumboots Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I must admit i could never understand why most clubs don`t have a coach for each position of defence, midfield and forwards. How can an ex striker tell a defender how to defend etc? I thought half of the problems last season were down to the defence not really defending as a team. Sure there were good INDIVIDUAL defensive displays but too few TEAM defensive displays. Definitely a good move by Ince. I feel it's a good move because as you say our defence wasn't exactly the most solid unit last year. Part of it was down to frequent changes in the line up but part of it was also down to their not working together enough. Anything that might help to make the defence more efficient has to be good.
Ronin Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 One wonders what today's fans would have made of King Kenny not taking training, recruiting a coach from Wimbledon and making his fist signing a miniscule fullback from Blackpool. Good point
1864roverite Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 This is from the words of a City fan who was with Ricky Hatton the other night in "An audience with Ricky Hatton". David Dunn was on the top table and looked fit and trim, he was happy as the proverbial Larry and enjoying himself. Towards the end when it came to the photographs he was spoken to about Hughes, MCFC, Bentley and Rovers in general. Without giving too much away he stated that the SQUAD were more than happy with Ince's appointment becasue he has such a high regard within the game. He further said that Rovers as a club were moving forward and that the loss of Hughes was something that the squad and club expected after he was DENIED the opportunity to go to Newcastle, a job he WANTED. He declined to say anything negative about Hughes move to City but said that he didnt expect any Rovers players to follow him although he could never rule it out. He mentioned Bentley was hot property but that he didnt know of any bids in the offing for him. The majority of the squad had a get together last week before returning to preseason and everything was hunky dory, they are looking to beat 58 points and they most cerainly are looking forward to meeting Hughes new team both at Ewood and COMS. He mentioned that there was a story to tell about some of the back room staff which is currently subject to an order of some sort but that might make the press before the season begins. It was very difficult to ge anything else out of him for that story. As for City, it is well documented about cash flow problems and this is the rumour going around within football circles. There is already trouble at City due to the reorganisation in the back room staff and it has cost them a lot to get rid of everyone as Sven had put them all on good money !! Dunny was not drinking and was welcomed by all in the exclusive venue. Hatton was very complimentary, very drunk and very much the Fatton. He was on tremendous form all night.
Lathund Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 The only downside to hiring extra staff would be financially, but I doubt we'd do it if we couldn't afford it. Potentially there's also a "too many chefs..." argument to be made, but several of the people in question have worked with Ince before so presumably do get along. If the defensive coach appointment is made specifically to adress some of the weaknesses we've all seen in the team (Set piece defending mainly, but I also thought we made too many silly little mistakes at the back) then I find that encouraging. I've also wondered why that isn't more common. GK coaches are common, so why shouldn't this be? Even if admittedly GK is even more specialized. Although I wonder if it's a coach for defenders, a coach for defensive players (However that's defined; defenders and DMs?) or a coach for defending; i.e the whole squad? Either way, as long as the communication between the coaches is good this is all positive. I sure hope the guy knows how to teach marking on corners Wouldn't suprise me if we moved more towards the way American Football is coached; You have the defensive and offensive coordinators, and working under them are coaches specific to the various positions; i.e linebackers, quarterbacks and so on.
roversmum Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I don't think anyone was complaining but if we can't pass comment it's a poor do.
1864roverite Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Mum nothing whatsoever was aimed at you, I was simply pointing out that there are people/members who will pick out every negative rather than look for a positive in every bit of news we hear about Rovers. I wasnt exactly enthralled about PI's appointment but having had time to think about it I am more than prepared to back him and support him. The same for old big gob Bentley, if he stays then great if he goes then great again, at least we will see some substantial money coming in for his signature. People mention the new away kit and some with a negative slant, I think it looks smart and just as nice as our red and black kit. Thas the point I was trying to get across.
roversmum Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Right with you there, 1864. Misunderstanding, apologies. Can understand folks being concerned, though, but perhaps should look on it all as an adventure - it was, after all very obvious that the previous regime were not happy with the way things were going and had lost interest. Nice to see and hear that the players are very enthusiastic about their new situation too. Everything to look forward too, it seems. Bring it on. See you at Macclesfield!

Will be there in my special signed shirt - gift from kids at school, signed by them and not Rovers players
RevidgeBlue Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I don't think anyone was complaining but if we can't pass comment it's a poor do. Exactly mum, anyway 1864's posts usually consist of nothing more than blind optimism and you know what he's going to say before he writes it: "Chill out" "Relax" "Have a beer" "Everything's going to be all right"
RevidgeBlue Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 He mentioned that there was a story to tell about some of the back room staff which is currently subject to an order of some sort but that might make the press before the season begins. It was very difficult to ge anything else out of him for that story. The passing mention in today's LT about being dealt a blow by "losing" Hodges and Rodin was extremely cryptic and somewhat strange, wonder if that's what that relates to?
hawkiiz Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 just wondering. if bentley leave. how would scott brown from celtic do? he looks like a goodie to me. woule he be interrested??
1864roverite Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Blind optimism ? I didnt even know what it was I was going to write but of you want to make some some serious money with your new found skills then go ahead Rev, maybe YOu will make enough dosh to bail out the Rovers eh? NOT

What is the new away kit - being down south we have not been able to see it.
Hannah Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 The passing mention in today's LT about being dealt a blow by "losing" Hodges and Rodin was extremely cryptic and somewhat strange, wonder if that's what that relates to? Not seen anything in the news about this - last thing I heard Hughes had left Hodges behind. Where have they gone and what has been said? This tread is far too long to trawl back through.

Ricky Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Just noticed that Faz has been released from his position at Citeh. I know we've got loads of coaches but surely he'd be a welcome addition to out backroom team.

roverfanuk Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Just had an idea. Why don't we sell Bentley back to Arsenal for £15-£20 million, that way, if he has that sell-on clause, we wont have to give it to Arsenal? Arsenal can't pay us and then demand some of it back surely?!
