I think the Bentley business is about to kick off in a big way.

Full story - as I know it - in tomorrow's Daily Mirror.

Any bits cut out or needing explained will be provided after it lands on your doorstep.

It seems that this is just another re-hash of the existing speculation, with a slightly different slant on it.. Surely there is more to this Nicko - your words last night suggested something a lot more concrete than mere speculation, didn't they? What do we need to know?? Yours in sport.. :rover:

Well, Rovers have upped the price by£2m since thestart of summer if this is true.

I suspect it is a new manager saying to Bentley's Agent, OK we will opffer him for sale at a reasonable price and if nobody buys within 4 weeks, we expect the new contractto be signed.

Nobody bought and Benntley didn't sign when Sparky tried it at £15m, let's see what happens at £17m.

I still wouldn't want a dodgy IOU off Liverpool though.

The Lancashire Telegraph carrying an exlusive story in which John Williams is delighted to confirm that the Jack Walker Trust has re-instated funding for 2008/2009 season, this will mean Ince will have an extra £3 Million in the transfer kitty.

Eh Philip?

''Or they expect the new contract to be signed?''

Where have you plucked that one from old boy. It just sounds like they've accepted he wants to leave, but only if they get the exact figure that's been suggested.

You forget that was the deal Rovers put on the table with Bents' people in the summer according to Nicko.

Ince has clearly said he wants to retain Bentley- just speculating that if Rovers have signalled a £17m figure, it is unlikely to be done without strings attached.

Ir the Mirror story is true, then it's a good thing.

£17m is the current going rate for an England midfielder.

Putting a specific value on the player stops speculations about swap deals or makeweights.

Particularly useful when Liverpool coming sniffing around. Either offer £17m or stop wasting everyone's time.

And, as Philip says, if no-one matches our valuation, then Bentley stays and may as well sign his new, improved contract and see if anything changes in January or next summer.

By the way, isn't this the tactic we used before selling Duff?

Don't forget 17mill is the starting figure - a bidding battle may take place - with Rovers taking the best price. If a club really want bentley they will pay whatever it takes to get him.

Yes, but wasn't the high valuation designed to put off all but Chelsea, who then went and paid it (or something close)?

No he signed it the year before...way before Abramovich bought Chelsea. It was hoped it would put off any suitors unless someone offered crazy money. Then Chelsea came along and did just that. Overall it was a fantastic fee for a left winger but a sale is only good if you replace the player and we came nowhere near close to doing that.

The Bentley story is this:

£17 million is the asking price.

Spurs have had swaps turned down - but are expected to sell those players and come back with the cash...and very soon.

Everton, Villa and Liverpool will also have to find that figure.

The figure is high because there is a sell-on to Arsenal. I am told this 50 per cent above what was paid. Bentley cost more in installments than you might imagine - around £3 million.

So if Rovers get £17 million they would have to give Arsenal around £7 million of that. These are estimated rough figures, but not far away.

Rovers would be left with £10 million 'clear' but a profit of only £7 million.

Paul Ince is willing to sell - and I don't blame him - and John Williams is holding out for the sum.

With any luck this could get done quickly. My sources suggest Spurs will come back with cash and then it is up to the others to match it.

The sooner the better.

Arsenal get £7m? Thats absolutely shocking. Well done on their part for putting a sell-on in the contract to be able to claim that much money, but just when you thought you couldn't hate a club more than you do now, this comes about. Deary me.

I am sorry to have been proved correct on the 50%.

I still have my doubts as to whether he will find a taker at £17m and that goes for Spurs as well. I suspect a pre-contract renewal deal has been signed with Rovers in order to get the asking price down to £17m. Lets see what happens around 8 August.

All those folks who were willing to drive Bentley out of Ewood at ridiculously low prices must be feeling foolish.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Still not happy about him going to our direct rivals but I suppose if it has to be any Spurs has to be the best as long as we don't get any of their rejects.

Good on Rovers for sticking to a price though.

Wow, that is a lot more than I thought.

Does the clause only apply to cash?

Just an example. Bentley to Spurs, in exchange for £7m plus Bent. Would Arsenal only get £2m? (50% over £3m)

so

- great news about the trust adding their 3 million

- shocking news about the 50% sell on clause, although I guess we had next to no money at the time we signed him & Arsenal knew how good he was. £7 million profit.....OUCH!

- £17 million.....for one of the brightest talents to be playing for England at the moment. No other player, can play anywhere in the midfield or upfront, like Bentley. I don't doubt we'll be able to get that for him.

Don't be daft.

There will be no swap deal and the Arse will take a full valuation on any player involved in the swap if there were one.

If the Arse were awake enough to put in add-ons and a 50% sell-on then they'd be sure to be wideawake to any ruses to redefine what constitutes sell-on profit.

I think the fact Rovers were offering over £50K a week on Bent's new contract was a dead give away that he was worth far more WITH Rovers than he would be as a transfer fee away from Rovers. There is no way we can replace Bents with £10m in my opinion and this will be a very significant step backwards for Rovers if he is sold.

I was going to suggest 7th a realistic forecast finish for 08/9 if Rovers retain Bentley and Roque, 12th if one of them is sold and 15th if they both go.

Exactly. If I hear any more about Lennon and Bent I shall scweam and scweam and - well it looks as if I won't have to now thank goodness.

Let's hope for a bidding war and and increase on the £17m IN CASH!

It's never worked that way. Any player involved in an exchange, must have a value. If Spurs offered Aaron Lennon in PX, then Lennon has to have a value declared. Aresnal would get a %age of the total value of the deal.
