It's all kicking off...

BENTLEY - £17m?!?! Amazed by that price, but as Nicko says, totally understandable because of the (incredibly frustrating) Arsenal sell-on clause. Anyway, he's good - but not that good.

EMERTON ON THE WING - Hmm. Maybe Ince's direct, free-flowing, attacking football will bring a side to Emerton we've seldom seen...? We can but hope.

THE NEW ATTACKING MIDFIELDER - This HAS to be somebody good. An established player, a proven international, and an expensive one if need be. The calibre of this signing will "set the bar" for our entire season.

He will, after a couple of friendlies.

He might take those with a pinch of salt and only realise after some competitive games...just before the transfer window shuts.

Some at the club will tell him, won't they?

We aren't just going to try all the things that haven't worked previously, are we?

Just read romario is back in training with a san marino side :lol::lol:

They've got Aldair as well. "My" team, IFK Göteborg, play them in the CL qualifiers later this month. Had it been 1998 and not 2008 those two may well have been able to cause trouble, but I don't think they will now. They may have Romario but we have (former) CM legend Stefan Selakovic!

Record deal for Rovers or for Bolton Nicko? Im confused?

With regards to the American bid, is it possible Dan Williams interest isnt completely dead?

1 - Sorry, that was in response to a Claret inquiry...

2 - Forget Dan Williams. However in the talks involving Ronnie and Chowdery NO mention was ever made of an American bidder. Strange that.

I'd imagine few clubs manage any transfer activity whilst their manager is thousands of miles away from the base.

Why not if the manager has already identified the player he wants , possibly even spoken to the player or his agent, and all that remains is to do the deal with the player's club in terms of the fine print and details? don't people understand about video conferencing, etc?

sorry, that was Burnley we were talking about so perhaps they don't.

Re: Emerton on the right wing.

I don't think we'll be playing 4-4-2 much next season so I imagine we'll play Emerton more as an inside-right rather than an out-an-out winger. I would also imagine our front players will all be quite fluid and change positions a lot.

Possible.

Having Emerton on the right is only a problem if we have no creativity elsewhere. last season most play went through Bentley (either because he refused to give the ball to anybody else or because he was the main outlet) with him gone you don't have to replace the outlet in the same position.

My thoughts exactly. I was never a fan of Bert as a winger, far from it in fact. But if Ince changes the style of the team, as I believe he should, and we actually get some real threat from central midfield, then I'd be happy with Bert playing the role of a water-carrier on the wing when aided by a Chris Price style attacking fullback.

We were far too dependent on Bentley last year. The problem isn't replacing him, it's upgrading the other parts of the team that were effectively passengers: Dunn, Reid, MGP.

Oh, and 7 isn't 50% of 17, its 41%.

emerton is a very good player but he cant play right wing very well..

i personally think we should look at some cash + swap deals-therefore we dont have to give 50% straight to arsenal..

The values of the player/players in the swap would still be included in the sale price - and Arsenal would get their slice.

There is no way round it.

And you don't want anyone's cast-offs if you can help it.

Thats the only ray of light. I was actually looking forward to seeing Emerton in a CM role a bit more this season, he looked excellent there back end of last.

Answers to above

1 Souness didn't recognise it during his entire tenure.

2 No. Who could? That he would listen to anyway?

3 Probably. That's what happens when you buy in a manager who has never seen you play.

Technically every player unless you bring him through your youth ranks from an early age is someone else's cast offs. What you mean is that we want to choose which cast offs we buy and not be pushed into taking what a club like Spurs deem surplus to requirements.

Although if the cast-offs are of a Santa Cruz standard and price, as he was a Bayern Munich castoff, I won't mind.

Apparently 50% of any profit made on the price we paid for him, which according to Nicko is nearly £3m due to add ons such as international appearances, therefore the profit if we sell him at £17m is £14m, 50% of that is £7m.

You are competing with Spurs for a top-six slot.

You don't take players who are not good enough for their team.

will anybody really pay 17million for bentley tho??

surely if we get say 7million profit from the sale, then we should be looking at a right winger..

nicko, any news on training yesterday-i know its only early to say, but any players stand out, any players not stand out etc??
