Gav Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 You've contradicted yourself there, Gav. You say he isn't a quality player and then say we should have signed him before Liverpool got in. He's had a terrible time with injuries and was never going to be a starter at Liverpool. He's had to battle with Gerrard, when he was played on the right, and more recently the likes of Babbel and Benayoun, who have done well. Pennant has a cracking cross, pace and a good all round game. He was ace for Birmingham and ha always impresed me when I've seen him since. Why don't you rate him? He has spent the last 2yrs living it up on the Liverpool social circuit; I challenge anyone to find a Liverpool fan with a good word to say about the guy, they despise him for his antics over the past few seasons. He had the potential when he left Brum, but sadly now he's damaged goods on a fat contract, and if Ince goes for him it just shows he's out of his depth and not in check with the big league.

tcj_jones Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Judging by the posts I've seen today, you would love to have our manager at the helm. Quality manager, and it isn't just Villa fans that KNOW it. You sound like a Liverpool fan who thinks we should just cave in and give you our captain on the cheap. Other than that, see no reason why you would talk that way about Martin O'Neill. As for Carson - stay well clear. As a season ticket holder, and someone who travels to the majority of the away games, I can honestley say that not only did he not win us any points last season, he probably cost us many. If we had a decent keeper in net last year we would have got 5th place without a problem imo. He's a Championship goalkeeper and that is being kind to the guy. People say that the England game knocked his confidence - what? For the whole season? The truth is he was never much good before that England game. He looked decent at Charlton because he was having shots kicked at him every 2 seconds - at Villa, he might go a game with only 2 shots kicked at him, but you could bet your life that he would let one in. You can do a lot, lot better. Martin O'Neill wouldn't even do business at £5m now. You're lucky though, it's rumoured that the two clubs interested in him are Stoke and WBA - sounds about right, unless your manager is on a one man mission to take you from a top 8 team to a bottom 3 team. I saw a lot of Carson at Sheffield Wednesday and he was downright sensational. Every part of his game was spot on. Obviously you've seen more than him than me, but I'm still not sure I agree with what you say. I reckon he'll become a top goalkeeper.
Hughesy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I also believe Carson will become a top keeper, along with Foster. Nicko - anything new for us?
Dunnfc Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I think with Carson is the word potencial and hes had 5 loan moves in four years. Hes never had the same surronding for a long time hes never had stability like most Blackburn players have had, hes never had a chance at a club whos owned him outright. Carson was brilliant for Villa but when he dropped the Croatia clangers his confidence dipped and he wasen't commanding enough, something that we know Friedel can do brilliantly without thinking about twice. Carson is 22 or something like that and for a goalie hes a baby but hes got potenical and his is to be a top keeper, id have him here for 4 million.

Different league to be honest - like I said - Championship goalkeeper. Ask any Villa fan - none of us want him, and I'm not joking when I say that most would tell you he's the worst goalkeeper we've had in the last 10-15 years and that includes the likes of Micheal Oakes and Peter Enckleman.
alexanders Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Pennant has been a victim of Rafa Benitez terrible rotation system. He never got the cosistency he needs in Liverpool. I think he seems like a threat everytime he's on, though he clearly lacks some confidence.

tonygreenbank Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I have got to say I am very rarely amazed by transfers any more. But when you find out who is coming to Rovers tomorrow you may well keel over. No more details. Get your Daily Mirror. It's an exclusive and it is quite, quite astonishing. I can't wait to find out the reaction. I am saying no more. I must have a strong drink. Nicko when I logged on here last night at this time this is what you had written. You certainly kept to the sensationalist and I think a lot of people have based their hysteria to the news on this thread on what you had written What I find interesting is that by this afternoon you have backtracked a little bit from last night and you were suggesting that Paul Ince knows what he is doing and it could be a good bit of business for the club in terms of his experience if he proves his fitness. My own technical inadequacies have stopped me from adding your post here but it was on page 252 for those who want to check. Does mean that you have had a change of heart? If you have then it might make certain posters less suicidal!
Presty On Tour Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Has anyone else noticed that in recent times most of our business seems to be linked with Birmingham, Manchester United and Liverpool. It seems to be like a merry go round. Friedel- Ex Liverpool Warnock- Ex Liverpool Babbel- Ex Liverpool May - Left for Man Utd Berg - Left for Man Utd Curtis - Ex Man Utd Henchoz - Us -Liverpool and eventually back Savage- Ex Man Utd and Birmingham Dunn- Went and come back from Birmingham Johnson - Birmingham Taylor - Birmingham Bellamy - Liverpool Cole - Ex Man Utd Yorke - Ex Man Utd Ince - Ex Man Utd and Liverpool Hughes - Ex Man Utd Kidd - Ex Man Utd Now some players we are linked with this summer Fowler - Ex Liverpool Larrson - Birmingham Pennant - Ex Birmingham, Liverpool Carrson - Liverpool
Hughesy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 £4m ouch? He cant of done a bad job for your lot - you finished 6th. The thing about us is that we always have good goolkeepers. Brown also looks quite handy so im not worried. Who have Villa got for goal?

bazza Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I've read today's Mirror and cannot find anything about Robbie Fowler; an article about O'Neill's bid for Friedel, yes but nothing about Fowler.

bazza Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 The copy of the Mirror I bought had a half a page spread on Fowler. The one I read was delivered in Adlington to my father-in-law who reads it cover to cover. He was unaware of the Fowler news when I visited him today.

I'm sorry, but Carson is miles ahead of those two. More recently, Sorensen as well is nowhere near as good. What exactly has he done that's been SO bad? It's all relative, Scott Carson was sensational in the Championship, so would Christiano Ronaldo be. I honestly believe it's different for a keeper as well. Your job has a different kind of impact on the game.

If you have then it might make certain posters less suicidal! My description of the story last night was deadly accurate. I think if you look at the reaction that would be confirmed. I haven't backtracked at all...but I do think the manager has to decide on these things - and can't be listening to the fans. Sorry if that is unpopular, but it is realistic. The manager was appointed to make big calls. I am personally shocked by it, but the manager is the one who matters. Nobody on here stands or falls by the decision - he does. If he wants Fowler he should have him. End of. Sorry for breaking such an important and interesting story.

Ah, don't be feeling sorry for yourself - no matter how much anyone rails at you it's not really at YOU personally, it's because we're concerned and worried about the future direction of our beloved Rovers. It's going to happen that way with news. And previous posters are correct, some took your reaction optimistically, some realistically, and that's the real source of anger and disappointment. We were hoping for something really positive. Hopefully that will come. Knowing is better than not knowing, for me anyway. And of course you're right, it's on Ince's head, a fact of which I sure he's aware. Fowler is a gamble that may or may not pay off, only time will tell and in the meantime it's probably not going to cost Rovers much. I suspect this is rather a bye the bye - I doubt he sees it as particularly significant just at the moment. His next few signings are key, though. Those and the Brad situation - the ramifications of that one are very hard to predict but he must know that the fans love Brad so he must also know that what he does there will be a major factor on how the fans see him at the start. Results will decide the rest.
modes98 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Anti Niemi is the only keeper available who could come close to Friedel's heroics. Jussi jaaskaleinen(sp) I'm sorry but as a akeeper myself, both of thees come under tha bracket of drama queens. Tehy make every save look like they have sprinted across the goal at full speed and drived to make it. Not worth it at all. id be delighted if pennant was bentley's replacement.. he has pace, can take on players, and has a decent cross on him.. Pennant has been a victim of Rafa Benitez terrible rotation system. He never got the cosistency he needs in Liverpool. Which Pennant have you been watching? At brum he hit about 1 in 7 or 8 crosses and he hasn't got any better. The Brum fans didn't like him for end product when he was there, and that is what we need with rocky in the middle. Thomas Sorensen is on a free. Do we want a keeper who can distribute the ball?....yes...oh don't go for him! The manager was appointed to make big calls. He can keep making the big cals, if they are like this however he will be out the foor quicker than Sammy Lee at NOTLOB! Brad has to stay, and Robbie has to # off to cardiff! Gally is better!

I honestly believe it's different for a keeper as well. Your job has a different kind of impact on the game. Scott Carson is garbage and if he signs for your lot - I would say that you will have one of the worst defensive records in the league. He can't catch, he doesn't command his box, he doesn't organise his defense, he never comes to claim a corner, he is often off his line for shots so thus has lesser time to react to shots, he isn't assertive and a good shot stopper? - well he's got to save some! Mate, I've watched him for a whole season, behind what wasn't a bad defense in Bouma, Davies/Knight, Laursen and Mellberg/Gardner. Sorensen is far better than Carson, far better and any Villa fan will tell you that. He fell out with Oneill and there was no way back for him unfortunately. If you've got time on your hands, the link shows a 125 page thread about 'our goalkeeper', starts off quite positive, but by the end of the season, it's clear that not one Villa fan wants Carson at our club. Absoloute rubbish. A thread about the worst goalkeeper in the Premiership last season for me - Scott Carson
Bobby G Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 How on earth do some people prefer Pennant to Lennon I wont ever know!

Majiball Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Robbie Fowler at Liverpools Xmas bash 2006. Quality, mate really nose and all! Why do I get the same picture about that (Fowler trying to coach Benni And Roque) as I used to get of Dean Saunders coaching Alan Shearer and Michael Owen??? Its quite a picture, Saunders coaching Shearer ROFLMAO, I'll bet he just made him tea! Coaching the academy could be a stroke of genius. Coaching Benni mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Fowler at the Academy, my god we'd have no kids left Coke monsters don't go down well with parents!
Hughesy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Apparently United have made an official £20m bid for Berbatov and also Arsenal are looking to Hijack liverpools bid for Barry.
