RevidgeBlue Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Because he is an inferior keeper than we currently have. On current form maybe, but certainly not in the medium term.

Hughesy Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Think of it this way. If we were to get Friedel to sign a new deal on £50k for 3 years it would work out as shown. £2,600,000 extra £25k for 2 years £2,600,000 extra 1 year at 50k So £5,200,000 in wages extra than currently planned. £2,500,000 transfer fee = £7.7m So we could lose out on an extra £7.7m on a 37 year old, that could quite easily get an injury or two over the next season or two and could also slow him down considerably. If we can get Robinson at 9 years younger for say £1-1.5m more and on the same £25k wages then we don’t lose £7.7m over the next 2 years. We could also potentially have an England keeper on our hands with 10 years or so still to go in his career.
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 On current form maybe, but certainly not in the medium term. He will never be as good as Brad, and he has had obvious flaws to his game since his Leeds days.
Eddie Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 You can't possibly disagree with that. Anyone seriously expect a 40 year old Friedel to be better than a 30 year old Robinson?

I've heard all that and I don't deny it but to get anything out of the deal we have to get the guy fit, to lose about a stone and then get him playing well. We were good at that sort of thing but how do we know the new regime will be. seems a very high risk deal to me, and coupled with the other potential players leaving, seems like bad news upon bad news.
RevidgeBlue Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 But surely we can find better than robinson for the price we appear to be about to pay, if the fee being discussed so far is true. I don't know what the exact fee for Robinson is, or what he would be valued at as part of a swap involving Bentley. 4m for a 28 yearold keeper who has forty odd caps fopr England seems an absolute snip to me though. Would have expected to have to pay a lot more for him.
Flopsy Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Brad is what? 37? age is going to catch up with him pretty soon, whatever we might hope. Robbinson is a good keeper, although his long range shot stopping is suspect, but then again Brad's defending of freekicks is suspect. They all have flaws
T4E Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 You've changed your tune. I think it's more that he's forgotten his tune. Probably cos of all the hash.
The Prof. Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Still can't believe we are paying £2.5m and 50k a week for Brad Friedel, a 37 year old. This tv deal (and a billionaire owner) has done funny things to football. I'd put up with this for another billionaire owner!

Would have expected to have to pay a lot more for him. Why? Spurs want to get rid of him apparently so why should we pay more to take a player off their hands who is surplus to requirements. You pay top prices when clubs don't want to lose players. As you say and has been said often, we don't know what the fee is, but I just hope it isn't much at all.
Ricky Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I'm sure JW will be pushing the price down as low as he can for Robinson. He's not needed at Spurs so I'm sure we're in a good position to get a good deal. It's a good time to grab him as his stock is low, can you imagine what price they would have wanted for him 18 months ago when he was established as England's number 1. We wouldn't have stood a chance. These are the markets we thrive in, players who are out of form and struggling to get games elsewhere. I'm sure Robinson would see it as an attractive move as well.

I 100% agree. Big Sam got old players, our niche can be out of form younger players with potential to be great again
modes98 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I can't remember his last good performance and he costs a lot for a player who hasn't been in a first team place for ages. Robinson last appeared in spurs' first team on 30th March, hardly ages!
gumboots Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Robinson last appeared in spurs' first team on 30th March, hardly ages! Not regularly though did he?
Ronin Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach.
Antgrad Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach. Looking forward to the defense standing there with their hands in the air.
Majiball Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach. Mmmm can anyone say one nil to the Rovers!
den Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach. Nigel Piggin' Winterburn - where's he been lately?
pksrover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach. And we was afraid of the huge backroom staff that Big Fat Sam was planning to bring in? Soon Ince have more members in his backroom staff than in his playing staff I'd never seen old Winterburn as a coach, has he actually done any coaching after he retired? I know he's been a pundit sometimes. Looking forward to the defense standing there with their hands in the air. Maybe that will help Benni understand the offside rule in training?
2PAC 4 Blackburn Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 £16M Joaquin swoop Sounds a bit unrealistic for Rovers? Unfortunately..........
Martin Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Official text says we've just signed Nigel Winterburn as Defensive coach. I honestly thought that was a joke. But I thought the same about Fowler and Brad so I guess it fits... Ah well at least it's interesting.
hawkiiz Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 £16M Joaquin swoop Sounds a bit unrealistic for Rovers? Unfortunately.......... i suppose they think we will get all of the 17m from bentley, but since we have to send a few of those to emirates it wont happen. 'qin probably dont want to play for us anyway. anyone know how much we need to give arse????
Parsonblue Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I 100% agree. Big Sam got old players, our niche can be out of form younger players with potential to be great again Robbie Fowler for example?
nicko Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 I wish there was something new to tell you...but you had it late last night. Today will be about sorting out fees, so there won't be any extra news on the Bentley-Robinson-Friedel thing until that is sorted. As for other potential targets, there might be more later. I think it's about to get busy all round. By the way, Robbie Fowler has been at training and seems to be mixing very well...now let's see if he is fit.
