67splitscreen Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Well, this is why I was shocked about us paying Brad big money because I just don't see O'Neill bringing in a new keeper and make him on more money than Laursen, Gabby, Young, Carew etc Oneill has always maintaned that he would pay big wages, but you have to earn it. At the moment Barry is our top earner and is on around £45k. It's very hard for non-Villa fans to understand that we are a completely new brand. It's very exciting times at Villa - highest gates in 50 years, a billionaire owner who isn't afraid to spend money - some of the things he has done are unbelievable, truly - and a great manager. Bentley fits into what we are building - young and English - Gabby, Young, Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Davies. I do apologise to Mr Nixon, I was simply questioning his sources. I still think Bentley will end up at Spurs. So putting brad on say 50k, is going to rattle a few cages, to say the least.
simcla Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 It's very hard for non-Villa fans to understand that we are a completely new brand. Do you work for a PR or marketing agency representing Villa by any chance?
Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 £2.5M fee on 50k per week for 3 years is just over 10.3 million pounds which isn't bad considering you're getting a top keeper. You could spend 6-7m on a good keeper and pay £30k/40k per week and end up taking a gamble so obviously it makes sense to pay Brad a lot more in wages as you'll spending around 3.5M per season on a top keeper.
Torgeir Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Easy, tiger. I can't go into any details on this. I got the info on an off-the-record basis and said I would leave it that way until it was close. I stick to those type of agreements with contacts. Just wanted to document my highly qualified guess: Yuri Zhirkov Edit: Last time I checked he wasn't a right winger so I can't be right.
BRFC1995 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 really don't see brad going anywhere thankfully......daily mail prints more rot than the sunday sport! hopefully boro sign robinson soon and put this nonsense to bed!
67splitscreen Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Sky Sports article on Inces comments. Shame he did not just say. Not for sale. So it does leave the door, ajar.
MancVillan Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Ive always thought O'neill was overated.... Fair enough. Took over from us in 16th - got us to 11th with no summer window, and then 6th the following season. Doing alright for me. same....plays ###### football Sorry, how many goals did you score last season? We were involved in many cracking games. O'Neill is a very attack minded manager. Infact, how many did we score at Ewood? Do you work for a PR or marketing agency representing Villa by any chance? Lol no. But honestly, we went from a nightmare Chairman in Ellis to an absolute dream in Lerner. Fantastic. £2.5M fee on 50k per week for 3 years is just over 10.3 million pounds which isn't bad considering you're getting a top keeper. You could spend 6-7m on a good keeper and pay £30k/40k per week and end up taking a gamble so obviously it makes sense to pay Brad a lot more in wages as you'll spending around 3.5M per season on a top keeper. I suppose that's a good way of looking at it actually. I agree. Who knows whats going to happen. I've got nothing against Rovers. I just think people are too sucked in to the media, and all this Spurs loving. We have the money, and we are a big club. We can attract Bentley imo, unless he favours things more than football, i.e. the London life.
rebelmswar Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Just wanted to document my highly qualified guess: Yuri Zhirkov Edit: Last time I checked he wasn't a right winger so I can't be right. Yuri Zhirkov, I wonder if that means Bloody Expensive in Russian?
RovertheHill Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 SSN playing the Ince interview after the current adverts now (10:57pm) for anyone interested...
roverfanuk Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Paul Ince: "There is no interest from me in Paul Robinson. As far as I am concerned, I want to keep Brad. I do not want to sell Brad, so why should I want Paul Robinson?"

I think we would be more disappointed if Bentley left to go to Villa rather than Spurs because Villa aren't a more superior team than us whereas Tottenham have been above us for quite a few seasons in a row now. IF we didn't fall asleep against Birmingham on the last game of the season and we actually won, we would have finished above Villa so it wouldn't make sense for Bentley to moan about Champions League football and then go to Villa. He would have to go to one of the top 4 or the team which is finishing just outside knocking on the Champions League door which is Spurs at the moment.

Mc Love Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Meh these online translators are useless So my secondary school teacher told me, and then asked me for my journal so she could write a letter to my parents
tony gale's mic Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 If we sold Friedel and Bentley to Villa, couldn't we legitimately say we're selling Friedel for £19.5 million and Bentley on a free? I know with player exchanges tribunals would decide values but technically surely Arsenal wouldnt have a leg to stand on?
Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 We finished above Spurs last season. LOL I just remembered that but too late. I was thinking of the season before. Do'h!

rebelmswar Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 We finished above Spurs last season. Its that natural English affliction that makes people see Spurs as better than they are.
67splitscreen Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 It's better to aim high and miss than to aim low and miss it's better to be on target, and score. Get in there.

He would have to go to one of the top 4 or the team which is finishing just outside knocking on the Champions League door which is Spurs at the moment. But that's my point - Villa are a very different club now. Long gone are those days near the bottom. Without Lerner and MON we would have got relegated the following season from the 16th finish. For all this Spurs greatness, they have finished in the top 8 around five times in the last 15 years. I don't see why everybody gets so excited about them. They continue to splash money at it, sack the manager, splash money and it's getting them nowhere. You need stability. They have to trust Ramos. But he seems to be just buying a new team in one summer season - not over time - and it isn't even proven prem material. Spurs might be great this season, they might be poor. You just don't know. Woodgate and King are really injury proned - they need cover for them. What good is it having Dos Santos, Modric, Berbatov, Keane, Bentley if you can't defend? If you were an up and coming English player, why would you look further than Aston Villa? We have a great English set up there right now. The England manager probably came to Villa Park more than any other ground last season.
AndyC Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Do you work for a PR or marketing agency representing Villa by any chance? their new CEO is a former top exec at IMG - the global sports marketing agency. I must admit, Villa are an incredibly well run club these days - so different to the ellis days. whilst we might not want to admit it - they are far more likely to break into the top 4. Billionaire owner, massive gates, good commercial income etc

For the record I think Martin O'Neill is one of the best managers around and has been for years. I wish Rovers could have appointed him after Sparky left but he was already contracted at Villa. If the Villa HAVE got loads-a-money then good luck to them and maybe they can challenge the top three. We'll have to see..... By the way, revenge will be sweet when you next visit Ewood
