...... and that the Guv'nor will spend most of his money on trying to find a replica of himself to boss the midfield.

Wouldn't mind a 'replica Ince' in midfield.. would certainly keep the rest on their toes for the whole 90 minutes

I do love how we white folk bring up the aparent racism of giving a non white person a job because they might not be the best candidate. Putting aside all the endemic structural issues that keep minorities out of certain professions it can't fail to come across as hideously small minded.

How can appointing the first British black manager not be newsworthy? When 25% of league players are black yet only 2% of managers are then it intuitively seems like something is amiss.

Not that I can complain, firmly ensconced as I am in the wonderful demographic of being white, middle class, university educated and devilishly handsome to boot.

Anyway, this isn't some positive discrimination issue, Ince, from all available information seems to have won the job on merit alone. Criticising his lack of experience is moot since Southgate and Keane had bugger all andGullit, incidentally, also had none. Some have mentioned that Hughes manged Wales for five years but a) international management is not all that similar to club management and B) five years at international level is probably less time with players than eighteen months in club management would be.

I don't like it being talked about on racial lines and while I may be university educated and middle class, I'm not white.

There's many walks of life where it would be newsworthy, but I disagree wholeheartedly with the assertion that the reason that there's been no black managers is down to some form of discrimination. Most of our managers are not from this playing generation but from the last one so to make those comparisons (it's not just you thats done it I know) is absurd. 25% of our players may be black but how many of those are British? It's the British players that are far more likely to go on to manage in this country.

And how many players of that generation were black? If we were to pick an average decade for managers of today to have been playing in (based on average age), I think the 80s would be a fair call. Were 25% of our players black then?

Don't get me wrong, when there's real reason for it then it does become big news. Obama potential first black president - huge after everything thats gone on. And there may well have historical precipitating factors to why we havent had many black managers but IMO to say its a current discrimination issue is simply not true.

I am as vehemently anti-racist as they come, but what I'm almost equally against is claims of discrimination when there doesn't appear to be any there. It discredits the real issues as a whole and gives the far right folks amongst us ammunition.

I THINK what he meant was that you saw Ince's race as a POSITIVE issue. (IE were in favour at least in part BECAUSE he was black).

It's the old positive discrimination argument. The Labour Party (which by the way I supported until they went too wishy-washy right wing) holds up all-women short list as a good thing because "it shows how non-anti-women we are". What it also shows is that, for whatever laudable reason, they ARE favouring discrimination.

Theno can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the way I read his comment.

Well i do think it is a good thing that there's a black British manager in the top flight, but any suggestion that I supported him being appointed on that basis (or indeed on any basis actually) is wrong - and stupid to suggest. My point is that it's a milestone, something 'drog fails to acknowledge, for some warped reason.

If that makes me a racist then he needs to take some medicine.

How unfortunate Zulu, you could have put it towards the cost of a 2009/10 CHAMPIONSHIP season ticket at the Breezeblock!

Nothing worse than being the victim of an early gloat, my friend. I would keep your powder dry for a while, if I were you. ;)

Zulu we would need to sell half of our team to be worse than bolton.

Well you might just have to do that. Oh, and I never said you were worse or better than Bolton. Never have, in the time I have posted on here.

I cant believe the subject of race has even entered this topic!

We are in the year 2008 we have players such as samba mcCarthy roberts etc!

I havent read all the previous posts so this isnt directed at anyone in particular

but come on. Even the papers are bringing it up pretty pathetic!

Paul Ince should have everyones backing as he guides rovers through what

hopefully will be an exciting few years!

What has a persons race / colour got to do with the appointment of a football manager - though to be honest Paul Ince has in the past brought the sunject up himself- he wants to be the lead to other black player who are still playing to become managers - Andy Cole etc. But to me it is a none issue - Ince is Rovers manager - thats it.

Ironically, I do believe he is capable of getting the best out of players. He also hates laziness - so the first player who could get the Ince hairdryer could be Benni Macarthy - especially if he plays like he did last season. Roberts will be shown how to score a goal one on one - or sold. Paul Ince v Mokena now that could be interesting. The midfield will be better trained. Hughes was a striker and therefore to a certain extent concentrated on the forwards. Rovers have a stike force in RSC. Ince will be able to spot good midfield players as well as defenders because of his own playing days etc.

I believe that Ince did a lot of training of players at MKD's so I believe would also help in the encouraging of players to play better.

Oojer has already said he wants to go and I believe he will do so.

I would also be surprised if Dunn & Reid take to Paul Ince. I think one or two players are in for a wake up call under Paul Ince which will benefit Rovers. At least it won't be BFS style of football, but a passing game instead.

Is it known yet who Ince is bringing with him in the mangerment team?

I see you guys are going to break the bank for a striker, based on what Nicko was saying, sounds like the French guy, as he was suggesting Saha on loan.

I think your post was aimed at me American.

Rumours abound that we are in for Saha - presumably he would take possession of the Reebok injury suite recently vacated by Fortune. Milan Baros has also been mentioned - God help us. Also rumours are rife concerning some expensive, and yet unspecified, European striker.

Being a seasoned Wanderers transfer watcher for many years I subscribe to the "shirt, pitch, grin" school of thought. That loosely translates as "I'll believe it when I see it in the Bolton Evening News, with a photo!"

Substitute LET for BEN and that's how wise Rovers fans should view transfer rumours too.

Only firm rumour I believe in is the one that says we are seriously looking for for one or two strikers, two midfielders (one of which is already nailed - Muamba) and a defender. I also believe that both Jaaskelainen and Al Habsi are on board. Two good keepers there - oh and yes I rate Friedel too before any knuckle dragger tries to dive in!

If thats the angle Setanta want to take then they'll lose any Rovers supporters that they had I imagine. Sky have been very positive in their reporting of the news today.

So by digging up his past comments on Setanta for everyone to use as amunition against us your not making a big deal out of it QOTSA?

I'd totally forgotten he'd made such remarks up until recently.....................

I hope this puts it into context. http://www.setantasports.com/en/Blogs/A-to...ets/blog-space/

A bit petty perhaps, dj! :)

God, last moan, as he's now rovers manager and as such is carrying my hopes for the team - I really hope this works out. I can't help feeling apprehensive - we'll see what the summer brings in terms of player movement and staff team building.

Well, best of luck to incey, I'll still be cheering for t'Rovers. Might be a while before I start cheering him, though!

Any way of definitely finding out how much money we have Nicko from one of your Ince pals?

Same as it ever was...

Sparky's kitty - £10 million or so.

Maybe Sparky's compo - £4.6 million up front.

And any sales.

They can't print the stuff, you know.
