What do you expect Theno……. when we have whole generations ( my generation) of people that are drummed with the message that the Guardian is the bible and the Mail is read by the devil.

The indoctrination starts young and when students reach university its is unscrupulously forced onto students by the flower-power academic world.

Which university did you attend?

I was never told that at University (what with all the actual serious learning that was going on). How about anyone else?

I think you might be hearing voices again.

In any case Theno, you don't need to be an expert on the Mail to know what it's all about. I don't buy the Sun either but I know it's a Manchester United-loving rag with low circulation in Merseyside.

Well that's strange because in my five years studying here at Leeds so far, the only things forced onto me have been the course I'm studying and a particularly nasty alcoholic concoction called "Green Death". Through a funnel straight into my throat.

They can't have been forcing all that strong if you haven't turned into a "flower power" type as you put it.

I mix with folks from all political persuasions, and there's at least as much scorn directed towards those who are on the extreme liberal left side of things as those who support it. I know quite a few centre/centre right folks though who despise the Mail just as much as I do.

Maybe, just maybe they might have a point with their criticism of the Mail...

I'm pretty sure they do report on immigrants every day of the week.

It's no different all. However in relation to this particular story, there is more about it than simply reporting the news. Like much of its content, news and opinion pieces are rarely distinct.

..... In any case Theno, you don't need to be an expert on the Mail to know what it's all about.

Well you do make it sound like you are very familiar with it. ;)

I can assure you the experience is real. How many people who leave university will vote conservative or read the mail as a comparison to the rest of the general public?

Thanks for the assurance, your views immediately put a new spin on five years of experience.

How many people who leave university will vote Conservative as compared to the general public? I'd say at least as many, if not more. I personally doubt I will end up voting Tory anytime in the future, but generally Tory voters are from the "higher" socioeconomic classes, who earn more etc. Graduate salaries are significantly higher than non-graduate salaries and the traditional Tory vote is from the middle classes, who are much more likely to have been university educated than the working classes who are more likely to vote Labour. Obviously sweeping generalisations here, but if we're talking about numbers and trends then it's pretty accurate.

How many will read the Mail? Maybe a bit less but could be at least as many eventually given time. Going to university does broaden your mind if you let it, that's not to say everyone who goes to university is automatically more broad minded than someone who has never been. But you are exposed to new ideas, many different viewpoints, and (at certain universities more than others) people from all corners of the world that you wouldn't necessarily have been exposed to had you not have been. Noone says you have to follow them, and it's only the sheep that do that. But you do learn to respect them, evaluate them and take some ideas on board should you wish. Generally, this means those who do end up voting Tory and/or aligning themselves to the right will at least pick a paper which doesn't feed on hate, ignorance and narrow-mindedness like the Mail and the Express do, generally something like the Times, the Telegraph or the FT if they're so inclined. In practice though, as I mentioned before, I'm sure there will be plenty of ignorant folk who did attend University, just like there'll be plenty of broad minded folk who didn't.

That sounds more like a result of a university education and, well, simple choice, rather than any final orders given out at graduation. Quite how people have time to be indoctrinated ('You must not read the Mail. You must not vote Conservative. Repeat!') while at the same time studying for a degree is beyond me. Perhaps my own university experience is skewed but I spent three years socialising and, you know, studying. Nobody ever came into a lecture hall and drilled us in the Communist manifesto or indeed the Guardian's editorial section. I think you're perhaps adopting too wide a perspective in relation to a hugely varied subject.

When I was at uni (few years ago now), everyone, but everyone, read the Grauniad - even me!

I eventually gave up reading it a few years back, I was worried I'd start wearing sandals, grow a beard and drink real ale.

I sometime read the Independent now, but tend to bypass all the green stuff. Quite a good read.

I picked up Wednesday's Mail when I got home last night -- funnily enough not one mention of immigration in the whole 'paper. Maybe it was because I picked up the French edition?

. Therefore housing will always be worth buying as it will always be in demand in the long run - renting is dead money . Get on the ladder as soon as you can afford to as housing is not going to get "much cheaper" .

Den . I wish you'd stop putting me in the same bracket as this ridiculous poster .

Not only is he wrong - he is positively dangerous if he truly believes this . If he read his beloved Daily hate Mail more closely he would realise the British and world economy is in a mess and that house prices are overvalued and are going to tumble over the next five years or more .

If he had bothered to read my post properly I never advocated renting 40 years as he suggested (twisting words to suit his own blinkered arguments as per usual) but stated that with house prices in decline for the forseeable future renting is better than buying at present.

For those setting up home or looking to buy now there are opportunities opening up. My advice based on the last housing downturn in the early 1990s would be to buy a new home .

In the past few days Bovis, TaylorWimpey, Persimmon and Barratt have all announced redundancies after a 30 - 40 per cent slump in business over the past year. The construction industry is in going into recession (to be followed by the national economy), all these companies are looking to get unsold homes off their books and they are all DESPERATE FOR CASH.

So now is the time to be cheeky, play "hard ball" as the Americans say and make very low offers for a new home. If a house is being marketed at £100,000 offer £70,000 or less; £150,00 offer £100,00, £200,000 offer £150,000 and so on. Stick to your guns and insist that you are willing to pay that price and that price only.

It worked for me in 1991 when I bought a £170,000 new home for £110,000 and it will work again.

On the other hand you could wait another 12 - 18 months when housebuilders are going bust, house prices are down another 10 - 15 per cent and there really is blood on the streets.

Great thanks : sold up and portfolio 95 per cent cash at present waiting for the market to bottom.

Another advantage of shares as an asset class over houses : you can liquidate the lot with one telephone call.

More bad news for the US housing market.

Fantastic stuff! Left wing, tree hugging, train loving Jimbo not only reads and believes but is now actually recommending we follow the teachings and advice offered in the Daily Mail and the Torygraph! Kinbrilliant!

Just adds substance to my current theory that it's the left wingers amongst society who actually subsidise the right wing press.

I've got the mental picture now Theno,

Jim in his nursing home room shouting down the phone

increase my payments to nat west, decrease my payments to nat west, sell mining stock, buy mining stock, sell, sell, sell,

Reading the last three posts, - it's time to close the topic. Same people, same agenda.

May as well leave it open Den.... it'll only rumble on somewhere else.

But imo amid the sniping there has been some interesting and useful info and opinion. However if snakes on a plane is what floats your boat then it's easy ..... you can just ignore this thread entirely. ;)

Telling the moderators to ignore the thread?

Theno, the three posts I mentioned have absolutely no point to make on anything. They are simply trying to wind people up.

Some might say they are trolling, - and we all know that's against site rules. Still, better we ignore that eh?

Please keep on topic.

Was having a reasonable debate about the housing market until Gordon made his usual stupid comments.

When it comes down to it, we all want to make our lives better, we have no problems stepping over someone who wasnt as astute in the stock market. This is the capitalist worls we live in.

What do you do if you're left-wing, refuse to be motivated by money?

There's no left-wing anymore, it's all been re-branded thanks to Blair. News management matters most, convition and philosophy is for yesterday's man.

It all comes down to human nature and it sucks. We all end up pushing up daisies or blowing in the wind anyway, so what is the point in being the richest man in the boneyard?
