Iceman Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Interesting. If true I'd be slightly worried about Villanueva, they play in very similar positions. Maybe he's being looked at as a Bentley replacement though, which might indicate Spurs are nearing a dealable offer. Interesting that you mention that….Viillanueva is regarded as a central midfielder, but can play on both wings and is comfortable with both feet…That’s according to a Chillean who plays football for on of our local clubs here in South Africa…he is basically an exchange student,so plays in our lower league clubs. He says that Villanueva actually prefers playing down the wings, switching from right to left and left to right, throughout a game.

nicko Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Goal.com are not very good normally. True but they where the ones that, forced your exclusine on Castillo, or was it Villanueva No, they had him going to Man City. Keep up.
67splitscreen Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Well, either that or we are really looking into 5 in midfield. If nothing else, it's good to have options. It is the most important area on the pitch, so it would be great to finally have the selection choices be difficult not simply because everyone is crap. Think Brad may disagree, but then if your rite maybe Robinson will do after all.
92er Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Mind you, where are you going to get the strong-running midfielder you want for a similar price? MK Dons??? for even less???
Eddie Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 If your midfield is really, really good then you goalkeeper is never involved.
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 If your midfield is really, really good then you goalkeeper is never involved. I agree to an extent. I think it was universally clear last season that our main weakness more than any other area was our central midfield. Its great to see us being linked to central midfielders as its clear the board and the manager know where our weakness is and are looking to resolve it.
67splitscreen Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 [ If your midfield is really, really good then you goalkeeper is never involved. Fair comment, 11 outfield players, nearest goal goes in. Them where the days.
92er Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Yes it does - it says to the players look - this fat lad is better than you - and he isn't - the premiership is a different place than it was when Fowler was in his pomp. It undermines the managers credibility with the players which was my point. I wondered if he might be looking to put money in though - Come on down Kate Moss! Although Ince will not be bothered about this, it also sends a message to the fans. It certainly puts another question mark in my mind, and in the minds of some other friends, about his ability on the trnsfer market.
b12_simon Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 If your midfield is really, really good then you goalkeeper is never involved. Have you an example of a team that went a whole season without needing to make a save? Thought not.
Head Rover Heels Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Have you an example of a team that went a whole season without needing to make a save? Thought not.Swindon had a decent stab at it when they were in the premiership
blue/white Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Nicko..... Just been reading some disturbing stuff regarding our incoming Charlie Newhouse.... Is the work permit going to be a serious obstacle? I ask because San Lorenzo de Almagro (they had expressed an interest in him in Jan. '08) are looking at bring him on loan for 6 months (to cover for the departing D'Allesandro). The source mentioned that the work permit had made it difficult for CV to join Rovers in August and so it was deemed beneficial to all parties that he play in Argentina until the yearend when the paper work might be ready for him.... While that seems like a good idea in the worse case scenario, it didn't make sense to me as the paperwork has just been submitted..... what do you think? It sounds like agent speak,no?
T4E Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Swindon had a decent stab at it when they were in the premiership Easy buddy!
Head Rover Heels Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Easy buddy!I nearly said "we", but was a little uncomfortable using that terminology on here
Eddie Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Have you an example of a team that went a whole season without needing to make a save? Thought not. Of course not, but what does that prove? Can't remember a team going an entire season without their 3rd choice striker scoring a goal, doesn't make him the most important player in a squad. Every position is important and your goalkeeper is very important, but I don't view it as being as important as your midfield. A midfield will allow you to regularly dominate games and be in control. A good goalkeeper will keep you in games you shouldn't have any right to take anything from, but only sometimes. Even the greatest keeper will let something in if he is always on the wrong end of things.
roverfanuk Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Easy buddy! ... i'm not your Sorry couldn't resist it!

Very interesting, but the money is in England - both for the player and his club. I suppose if he didn't get his work permit he could go there...but that's not the plan just now. If some of the jokers who get permits are allowed in and Rovers are refused I suggest you march on Westminster....or Sheffield where they issue them. I think Carlos will be OK.
Antgrad Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Bresciano In"English" The Palermo by the end of next week satisfied the Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano (28). The outside offensive rosanero extension will be sold outright to Blackburn Rovers, a company militant in the English Premier League. A championship, the latter, which is a very pleasant destination by the player, given the presence of several compatriots. The negotiations should conclude on the basis of 4.5 million euros.

I know we have our share of 'meatheads' at Ewood, but to call the club militant... seems extreme to me.
broadsword Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Bloody hell, when did Degsy Hatton take over? Is this down to Paul Mellifluous?
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Nicko, can you honestly see Spurs paying the whole amount in cash for Bentley? Every time Spurs sign a player it’s usually for a smallish fee but the contract is full of bonuses, add-ons etc. I can't see our board allowing such a deal for Bentley considering we could do with as much money as possible and then there is the issue about Arsenal wanting their piece which would be even more complicated with a contract full of bonuses and add-ons.
Hughesy Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Its simple really The board shouldnt cave in its £13.5m + Robinson or a straight £17m cash or Bentley goes nowhere! Like it or lump it.
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Straight £17m cash or Bentley goes nowhere! Like it or lump it. A straight, up front £17 million cash offer is the only one i would accept.

I guess this is what is holding it up so much, looks like Blackburn are doing what they should and holding out for his full valuation and not a penny less. I'd like to see this saga end at some point obviously but I'm glad were not buckling and letting him go on the cheap.
Iceman Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Its because we a club going to war this season, hence the militant reference made.
