The Castillo deal is off according to todays Lancashire Telegraph and he has now returned to Red Star, also it says that Villanueva will arrive in England early next week at the same time as the squad returns from Portugal. It also says the deal involves a season long loan with a view to a permanent move :rover:

Five Live is reporting Rovers have accepted a bid for Friedel from an "undisclosed" PL club. Other than that the simplest thing to do is just enjoy summer now it's arrived, as virtually everything else is heading in rather than out.

Having bought the video and then seen the real thing, Ince has pulled the plug on Castillo. What happens if Villanueva doesn't live up to his video? Of the two I would have thought that Villanueva would be the bigger gamble. He's going to take time to settle in England with a different climate and culture. Nicko, with Castillo out of the picture does this leave an opening for Andrews?

I must admit that I am becoming concerned at the way the transfer window is developing.

We could well lose two of our three best players from last season - not bad for a club that said it was "not a selling club".

Coming in we have a goalkeeper who may or may not regain his form and confidence and a young player who hasn't played outside of South America. Plus, from the way Ince spoke in the LT yesterday, I've no doubt that Fowler will be added to the payroll.

At the moment I just get the feeling that the club is lacking a sense of direction. We have a much larger backroom staff now than under Hughes but the playing squad doesn't appear to being strengthened in the same way. We knew at the end of last season that we needed a larger and stronger squad and yet we are in the middle of selling two of our best players.

Out - Friedel (probably), Bentley (probably)

In - Villanueva (probably), Fowler (probably), Andrews (maybe), Osario (or other right back, highly probable), A. N. Other holding midfielder now that Castillo is a no-go (possibly), Robinson (almost definitely)

From the looks of things, the squad will end up stronger. As it stands, it's exactly the same. Oh wait, we did let Berner go...

Too true, at this moment in time its extremely concerning, signing Fowler would be a shocker for the fans and club, definitely not the way for Rovers to progress.

The way we should see it is.

£10m funds available to start with

Hughes & staff gone - £5m in compo

Ince & co in - £2m approx in compo

=£3m profit

Brad to Villa – Robbo to Rovers - £0.75m loss but not spending an extra £5m in wages over 3 years and also we have a replacement there for the next 8-10 years who has played a lot of international football!

Bentley out maybe? - £17m in – some of which goes to Arsenal (More likely to be around 20% of any profit – so say £2.8m)

King Carlos in – £400k for his loan, £3.5m if we want him permanently. Going off Youtube, he will be signed up very soon.

Fowler – Yes he is getting on, but you don’t lose the goalscoring ability, as Cole has showed over the last few years. If we can get Fowler fit and raring to go then he could become a handy tool and also of great benefit to people like Derbyshire.

Cruz – No movement and said a few times he is happy

Warnock – No movement – Newcastle have offered us £3m, likely to take closer to £7m to prise him away.

Dont panick.

Nicko, thanks for the regular updates. My first question in here because most people tend to post a lot of questions all the same...

Is the news on Castillo accurate or a load of bull? Has he gone back?

Listen guys if you want to bury your heads in the sand and put a positive spin on everything then that's your prerogative but here's my take on it.

We WILL be losing 2 of our three best players - that is pretty much set in stone. Warnock will probably depart (agents at work and funny how there have been two bids, player must have intimated he would like to go) and if Santa Cruz gets his head turned (by Arsenal or Spurs) chances are he'll be off too. You can throw the line that they're happy here and that they're 'looking forward to the new season' blah blah blah but the fact remains that when a bigger club comes calling, our players leave.

So that could leave us without our four best players of last season - great.

Incoming - a Chilean signed on the basis of a DVD and a failed attempt at an Ecuadorian on the same basis who didn't impress in the flesh. Worrying thing is that he was obviously our Plan A and now we're onto Plan B - maybe, God forbid, Keith Andrews a 2nd div/1st div journeyman. We don't know if the Chilean will adapt yet and there's even issues with his work permit to resolve. Add to that a striker who used to be good but hasn't been for at least 5 seasons and the squad starts to have a Championship bound look to it.

A bid for Robinson may be good IF he gets his form and confidence back, but he's got some act to follow and he'll hardly get the pulse racing.

I should be excited by the new regime and the opportunity to move forward, truth is I'm not. Hopefully something will happen to raise my spirits before kick off but I'm not holding my breath.

CASTILLO - well, he must have looked murder in training...this is a big letdown as so much effort was made to get him in and clear up the third-party issues...it also shows the perils of signing someone off a DVD...fair enough, if the manager has decided on him in three days that shows he can make a decision...but where is the 'midfielder with legs' that is being looked for...Andrews? Bresciano?

VILLANUEVA - a little bit puzzled that Carlos said his farewells, the club announced the deal and yet he is not coming in until next week...almost a week late...I will be happier when he is in the building.

The clock is ticking now, there are two or maybe even three midfielders needed and no-one has signed.

I said before that these weeks will decide how the season goes and I think that will be right.

Nicko, could it be that we have had to stop going for Castillo because we need the money elsewhere? a new keeper for example?

It can't be that surely...the new keeper might take an extra £1 million out of the budget.

Maybe the manager has seen another midfielder on video that he fancies more. ;)

Keith Andrews, Nicko?

If its a case that the DVD evidence didn't back up what Ince saw of Castillo in the flesh, then should we be slightly worried about Villanueva who looked an absolute star on video clips?

This feels like its turning into one of the worst transfer windows we have ever had.

To make that big a song and dance over someone and then not sign him ... not good.

To be fair, I don't think Rovers made a big song and dance. They seem always to have said it was a trial and it's only others who have made it sound like it was definitely going through.

I always thought it was more Burnley's style to bring in ageing has-beens in order to sell a few season tickets i.e. Gazza / Wright / Cole. It now appears that we are taking lessons off em. :(

No matter how PhilipL attempts to dress it all up the curve is definitely downward.

All the fuss about Castillo, came from Castillo himself and his agents.

I've never heard a word from Ince or Jw about him. Maybe he thinks highly of himself.

No, let's get it right.

Rovers approached Castillo and his agents...asked them over...went through the third-party issues and the prices...fixed up the flights...

Now it appears Castillo's agent has told the player he had a three-year deal waiting and this was no trial...where did that information come from?

So there have been a few stories told on this one.

The fact is that an experienced Ecuador international, with more caps than David Bentley among others, has been brought in under false pretences...and not measured up in THREE DAYS?

One way or another a lot of time has been wasted here...and not just by the South American guy.

As far as I can see Rovers have said nothing about any player so I'm not sure it's a bad sign. Players have been for trials before, makes a lot of sense to me. If he's rubbish better to find out before the deal is done?
