[Archived] Blackburn Sign Chilean Superstar Carlos Villanueva

I thought he was the only one, seem to remember (maybe Nicko) saying we asked for a similar player to Valencia.

Apparently the same agent also offered us someone else, but he didn't turn out to be as described.

It was Nicko's story, hopefully he wont mind me sharing as much as I have.

Today's LET

CARLOS IN £5M DEAL

looks like we've secured him, nice one! B)

That's not my reading of the article at all, we have the option to sign him, and JW says he will eventually cost us about 5m which we will exercise "if we want to."

The situation surely couldn't arise when our parsimonious owners would refuse to shell out that amount for him could it? We haven't spent that amount on a player since wee Barry.

Villenueva looks potentially the most exciting player I've seen in years. Hope he can get us through the next round of the Cup single handedly tomorrow night as well.

I wouldn't rule it out... Though there would be a huge backlash from the fans if he continues to show his talent and we don't decide to buy him.

There's no such thing as a huge backlash from fans here RVR, we'll all swallow the line that we're punching above our weight blah blah blah and accept it. I'd be extremely surprised (pleasantly) if we shell out 5 million for one player that's for sure.

Mind you, if he continues to show what he has so far, there bloody well should be a backlash if we don't sign him.

Well he looks like real quality. The price is higher than anticipated - I thought it was more like 3.5m? He could go a long way to replacing Bentley creative influence.

I don't know how muuh we can spend on a right winger in Jan if we take on Carlos but if we get someone decent we will be a serious footballing side!

Things are looking up - Treacy looks good, Simpson is a decent right back, Carlos is a wonderful talent, Cruz seems just as effective as last season. Big shame about Dunn getting injured, and the jury is still out on Grella and Andrews. But you have to say it loks like performing at the standard we did last season may not be impossible.

I think there would be a backlash if the guy continues to improve and lives up to the promise he shows. As JW said there is no reason to rush into it and doesn't the article say fee will go up to 5 million (presumably the initial fee could be lower than that) If the fee's agreed and there's no chance of anyone getting in before us than let's take our time and really evaluate him over a period of games and not just after one and a bit. They like what they've seen so far and seem to have put this story out to show fans that it is all under control and they are making plans regardless of what we may think.

Think travelling and international duty could be affecting him, but Santa has looked sluggish so far this season (and also missed a few decent chances).

He has missed quite a lot of chances but he is stil causing most defences huge problems. I mean he looks just as dangerous on the pitch with his movement, unlike Benni who just stopped moving last season after a great first year.

Pretty sure Cruz will top 17-18 goals again.

Bring on Rafael Scheidt!!!!

According to the faulty oracle, Soccerbase, Villaneuva scored 49 odd goals in 99 appearances for Audax Italiano. If that is true, this guy is a genuine star. Yes, it was only in Chile but that's still very impressive for a second forward.

I think the article was pointing out that the fee was fixed.

It's sensible to wait as long as we can before actually doing the deal. We hold all the cards, and it would be typical if we signed him then he went on to be a Grabbi or suffered a career ending injury. So we might as well hold out til the last minute to be on the safe side. We can't lose.

"He would ultimately cost us almost £5 mill and we will exercise that if we want to..." is one of JW's quotes in today's LT.

I was thinking what we could sing for him, all I could think of was:

Youtube, its just like watching youtube!

Don't know if anyone had any songs for him against grimsby but lets hope he gives us reason to sing tonight

Hi guys, I'm a Chilean football fan. I like to follow Chilean players abroad to see who has what it takes to help Chile make it to South Africa. We have a new crop of interesting talent coming through and we are very hopeful as to what this new generation can achieve in the world stage.

I have joined this forum to follow the development of one of these talents: Villanueva (Duh). But also to share any info I may get from Villanueva here in Chile and help you guys translate a thing or two if needed. Looking through this thread I can see you know very little about him apart from what youtube has on offer but judging from the few matches he has played so far (all Blackburn victories apparently!) he has done well and you have already got the general idea of what his style is all about. Neat left foot, good agility with the ball, dead ball specialist and a creative mind. You have also noticed his obvious lack of speed but most importantly his lack of physical strength.

But these are smaller concerns. In Chile it is well known the emphasis the Premiership puts on physical fitness and everyone is hoping you guys can give him that extra edge on physical performance. We know you are not miracle workers...Villanueva is a small guy, and will remain relatively small...his speed will never match that of other Chilean players like Mark Gonzalez (who by the way has 1/4 of the talent Villanueva has) nor will he be a muscle beast. But if they can improve his physical game in at least 30% - 40% I can easily see him making a name in Europe.

Creativity and talent on the other hand, you cannot train in that, you either have it or you don't. Luckily for Blackburn, Villanueva has both. I'm eager to see what you guys can do with him...

Welcome. Got any other good Chileans on there way to stardom that havent been spotted yet?

Stick them on a tape and send them to Ince please.

Seriously, with this guy it is a case of So far, So good. Hopefully he will continue to develop and he will soon become a well known name in the english prem.

He looks a good player when he's given time (like at a dead ball) but a few times yesterday he picked up the ball 35-40 yards from goal, took a few touches and before getting a shot or a pass away, got surrounded by defenders and the ball was taken away. I think it's just a case of him getting used to the speed of the Premier League : when he's learnt that he'll know that he has to get a shot away or draw the defenders as he does now but then slip a pass to a team mate who those defenders will have given a bit more room to.

No reason why he shouldn't learn things like this. And by the way, every Rovers fan wants him to do well.
